I wouldn't mind. Might actually be fun, if it was available for the PS3.

Do all MMOs have subscription fees? Or even subscriptions?

No they don't all have subscriptions. One of the better "just buy the box" games is the Guild Wars franchise. I only know from GW1, but there is a PVP focus, hence the name, but you can certainly just focus on the PVE aspect, and even play most of the game solo if you want as there are helpful party AI companions to tote around.

Many smaller MMOs have various methods of earning money: there is the popular micro-transaction method where the basic game is free, but you pay for character upgrades, quest packages, and so forth; there are also ones where there are a few tiers of gameplay where you have a basic game, and you purchase the higher level content as you come to it; and there are also the real economy clone games where you use real-world currency to exchange for game currency, the company takes a cut, and people can profit both inside and outside of the game world.

However, I will add that when playing an MMO by a massive company like Blizzard, quality really shows. There are several dozen servers (many of which got recent hardware upgrades), a huge forum community where posts move so fast it's hard to keep up and things fall off the front page quickly, a couple of official Blizzard partner fan resource sites with all of the free information and addons you can possibly imagine, and more.

My first experience with a huge online fan community for a game was Bioware's own Neverwinter Nights hub, as well as the fan module sites. At the time, I thought those were enormous. WoW's far eclipses those.

The main problem an older MMO like WoW has now though is that there are now three expansions, in addition to the original game. It's a heavy price for someone who is new to MMOs or even the Warcraft universe. They occasionally have store deals and such, but it's still quite a bit in addition to a monthly fee. I found the same true of Guild Wars in a way: I had gone away from GW for a while, and in the meantime they had released 2 additional campaigns and an expansion. When I was browsing forums and such for builds, people list all sorts of skills that I didn't have access to since I didn't have those other 3 games.

There's something for everyone really. But it all comes down to how much you are willing to pay for entertainment. If you want to spend hundreds of dollars on a single game over years, or hundreds of dollars on several games over years.

MMO has no ending. A story however has ending. Therefore, a story driven MMO like SWTOR has ending. So, once it ends players will stop playing. When players stop playing they will stop subscribe and the game will die. Personally, I think Bioware attempt to bait people with story driven MMO is a mistake + as far as I concern, beside the trilogy ME series, they're not known for writing good sequel or expansion. I played many free to play based MMORPG and every single one of them features open world with many options to enhance player's gaming experience like pets and events like monster raid or guild wars. Even social MMO encourage players to keep playing with ingame bonus and rewards.

I don't know how BioWare will make their story driven MMO attractive enough to keep people subscribe for a long time. As with every story there will be protagonist but for MMO's world everyone is a peasant hero who can never truly forge their own legend.

Don't we have enough MMOs as here is, without turning every singleplayer RPG games into them?

Too many reasons why it would be a bad idea I reckon:

1. Bioware already has an MMO, not saying they can't have two but creating a second MMO and upkeeping two MMO's isn't a small feat.

2. The Dragon Age universe is better explored and expanded through single player games...single player games are also fun and they are Bioware's specialty.

3. There are enough 'sword and magic' type MMO's out there, and a lot of them never innovate or do anything interesting, SWTOR is at least deviating this by not being your typical MMO setting and focusing on story and character development/plot more.

4. The fans would get angry. And not just the hardcore fanbase this time.

And there might be more reasons...

HOWEVER, it would be cool if they made a mini-MMO of a game.

And in this game it would basically play similar to Neverwinter Nights co-op. You could group with other players, and do quests and stuff.

And Bioware could have a whole team that creates big expansions and DLC (some free DLC) so there is an endless supply of content, also there could be user made modules too (though most user made modules would have silent Npcs and players.)

That is all just fanboy idealism though I guess :innocent:

But yeah, for the most part I don't think they should make an MMO/online Dragon Age game unless they are actually going to make it good and have the right planning and money for it.

I'm not really keen to play a typical cookie cutter MMO with the Dragon Age label and universe where you go around talking to silent NPCs who give you linear quests where you have to whack direwolves with glowing metal sticks and spam a bunch of ability keys, then you go into a raid full of elitist morons to fight an Archdemon with a billion downloaded add-ons and voice chat and heaps of serious business talk going on

Oh dear god no! SWTOR is the first Bioware game ever that I have no intention of buying. Last thing we need is to lose the DA setting to an MMO as well.

I'm quite impressed by SWTOR but I would still rather they didn't do this with DA. They would be competing with themselves for one thing, I would never stick with multiple MMO sub fees at the same time. I do hope they bring some of the things they have developed from SWTOR into DA though. The z axis and the ability to jump is something that has been lacking in Bioware games for a long time.

Are you guys afraid of a little social interaction? MMOs can be a lot of fun, and they don't have an ending like single player does.

Yeah, i'm a little shaggy fat boy who's angry with the society and live with my mom and i play games all day in my secret base in my basement.

In theory having no ending sounds great but basing on choices, moods, whether some people die, you just dont get to customize your story, and change it in the next time, i mean would you really make another "race" just to see a different outcome? you most likely wont touch that playthrough again

I'd prefer there not to be because it wouldn't really stick out in a market which is saturated with fantasy mmos. Plus shifting all franchises into mmos would ruin rpgs and their innovation.

I agree with everything nightscrawl has said. Despite my extreme vehemence to not post in necro threads, I would also add the problem of story continuity. There are already enough problems going from DA:O and A to DA2. Why add to that problem with a ton of choices or interactions in an MMO world as well? There is abviously going to be a single player DA3. So to juggle the lore, events and time tables of that game with a huge MMO's worth of other stuff would be too much of a strain. We can't even get Bioware to give us a timeline of events between the various DA games. How would they handle the glaring inconsistencies plot-wise of juggling an MMO plot and a single player game plot?

SWTOR is a fantastic mmo that took years to make, and I don't want to wait that long to play a dragon age mmo. If the dragon age team wants to incorporate group play, then adding a multiplayer aspect to DA 3 would be a good way to do that.
