Well, with the recent announcement that Mass Effect 2 (unfortunately not 1) is going to be coming out on PS3 early next year, I figured that I would probably want to play through the first one (as I've wanted to for a while and have been waiting for a PS3 port that seems to be nowhere in sight)
The only reason I've been holding off on it is I think my computer might not be sufficient to run the game smoothly. Anybody know if these specs are adequate?
Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit)
Intel Core 2 Quad Core Processor @ 2.40GHz
2GB RAM
ATI Radeon x1650 Series
Thanks a lot!
Mass Effect 1, run somewhat smoothly on this computer?

How much memory does your card have? The game recommends 256MB at minimum, although it does suggest your X1650 is supported.
I wouldn't expect to have mind blowing performance, and you may have to turn the settings down to get it to run smoothly.

Thanks for the quick reply
It's 256MB. I wouldn't really expect to have performance on par with the 360 or anything, just smooth enough to be playable all the way through without some major hinges on framerate or something

The official System requirements are a crock of feces; totally screwed up, but especially about Video. The Radeon X1300 XT is merely the exact same silicon as the X1600 Pro, with a new ID flashed onto its firmware, and neither of them is adequate. The X1650 XT (next above the X1650 Pro) is more like what the usual "Minimum" amounts to (able to run Low Image settings at a Medium Resolution without falling below about 30 FPS). Here's an amended minimum list:ChaosElement wrote...

Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit)

Minimum System Requirements for Mass Effect on the PC
(Corrected from dumb, Pie in the Sky lies to the real thing)
Operating System:
Windows XP or Vista
Processor:
2.4+GHZ Intel or 2.0+GHZ AMD
Memory:
1 Gigabyte Ram (XP)
2 Gigabyte Ram (Vista)
Video Card:
NVIDIA GeForce 6 series (6800GT or better: 210, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 7600 GS, 8200, 8300, 8400 GS, 8500, 9200, & 9300 are below minimum system requirements)
ATI Radeon X1800 GTO (X1300, X1300 Pro, X1550, HD 2400, HD 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, HD 4350, and HD 4550 are below minimum system requirements)
Hard Drive Space:
12 Gigabytes
Sound Card:
DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card and drivers
The X1650 cards weren't too far off the mark when new, back in 2006, but that is now four years ago, and nothing can stay the same, unless it's dead / dying, so the 1650s have fallen out the bottom of their class and into the Low End now, with the business grade hardware, such as the HD 5450 (which is better than the X1650 Pro, and even better than the X1650 XT now).
Here are the raw specs on the X1650 XT, and its next-upward bigger brother, the X1800 GTO:

The X1800 is definitely better for gaming, which shows you how useless a synthetic benchmark such as 3Dmark often is, since both of them have the same score, when in fact, they straddle the HD 5450's spot, one above, and one below.
