I just bought Mass Effect for PC. Heard many a great things about the game, eagerly looking forward to playing it.
I ran the install, no problem, but when I tried to run the game, it opened up into auto configuration (as most games do) and then crashed and shut itself down (as most games do not do). I have tried re-installing to the same result. I have tried running configuration directly to the same result.
Im not smart enough to know what else to do.
im running Windows Vista if that helps. I know it is a rather anti-gamer OS.
Im starting to think its Bioware who hates me. I bought Baldur's Gate 4 in 1 box set at the same time I bought Mass Effect, and when I try and play those, it wont even start because apparently it only runs in US or Canada. *raises eyebrow*
Crash on configuration

Just read I need to give my computer specs.
At the risk of sounding terribly computer illiterate... how would I go about finding those?

The thing that always baffles me is that so few of you pay any attention at all to the warning labels on the game boxes (and the digital copy vendors' download pages) until after the games won't run. You did take note of the real video card requirement this time? (No Intel chips qualify as graphics capable here.)

How often do people stop to consider if the product they buy isnt going to work? Im not at all ashamed to say I have NEVER looked at the box for specs, because I keep my computer updated every 3months or so (and by that I mean, I take it to my computer store and ask them to update it and make it run fast again
)
Thanks for listing for me what I can see on my box and not addressing my problem whatsoever
2.0+GHZ AMD with Nvidia video card, not sure what numbers, but purchased new about 3months ago.
My problem is software side, not hardware. Thank you for addressing my problem, but can you suggest something that would fix the issue I asked about, particularly the configuration (note: im not even getting INTO the game) crashing the program before it even starts.

New hardware isn't always good so we still need to see some specs. And you can trust employees of a hardware store to be dishonest. That's what they do.
To find your specs you should open DXdiag. To do this press windows logo + R, type Dxdiag and then press enter. Alternatively, click on the Windows logo on the bottom left of your screen and type dxdiag in the search engine. Processor and RAM information is in the system tab, the graphics card model number in the display tab.

Umm im having the same problem and my computer runs windows 7 (64 bit) intel core 2 duo 2.93 ghz (Not O.C.) nvidia 8600 gt (video kinda sux but my brother had the same exact card and it ran perfectly) ram = 4 gb ddr 2 (667 = 2gb 800 = 2gb). So i dont think the specs are whats doing it... could be the 64 bit but any help would be great!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since it doesn't seem to me that the OP author has totally relinquished his interest in his question, you need your own, separate problem report message, because what you have done so far is attempt to hihack the thread. You, at least, provided "some" of the data that the other gamer readers here need (and that the OP doesn't seem to want his answer badly enough to provide), but you still omitted most of it (read the applicable pinned message, atop the forum).

More often than not, this error message is specifically related to using bad graphics chips from Intel that are unable to handle the chore. I'm betting this is another such.Fredvdp wrote...

Gorath, you spend a lot of time here, and you help a lot of people, i can see that. But damn, you're a tool. And I say that with the utmost respect.
Morrigan, thank you for "hijacking" my thread. Any information to solving my problem is useful information, and since we shared a problem, I care not if my thread is hijacked, as long as the problem gets solved, right? Thanks for your fix
Fred, thanks for answering my sub question and trying to be helpful.

There is a patch (1.02) available for download which solved the crash on configuration for me. I run an Intel Quad core with Windows 7 (64bit). Nothing to do with drivers or graphics card.

Strange that no one looks for patches and instead instantly whines in a forum about the game not running properly.
Before whining, try a patch first.

Then try posting in the dragon age forums, and not mass effect. When you do so, I suggest you add only the information listed under "System" in the configuration utility, and not inflict them with the wall of text you inflicted on us.
