Figured I should post this since I didnt see a thread about it.

I'm not too excited after reading it since it seems alot is going to be put away in favor of more of an action oriented story thingy.

Buuut since I havent seen any acual gameplay, im going to just take a deep breath and not be too fast to judge ^^

How come they can't do both characters and environments?

Combat is broken up by conversations utilizing BioWare's characteristically sprawling dialogue trees. One interesting wrinkle is that the game keeps track of which responses are most frequently chosen by the player, which affects the rest of the dialogue. I typically go for the direct approach, so my Hawke says, "There's no time to argue. We go south."

Had I chosen the more rogueish responses though, he would have said, "If it's south or die... I'll take south."

This seems quite interesting. Will add a bit of personality depending on how you play.

"A year and a half ago, there was like four or five fantasy games, and you could put them side by side and it was kind of hard to tell them apart."

So strange that i find the "new look" make the game seem like everything else and the old DA:O look to be quite distinctive from most other games.

I remember Mike Laidaw hinted the writting team was doing something 'more' when someone asked about how her character's personality will develop throughout the game.

So I guess he meant that previous choices will affect future responses? Very cool.

He describes Hawke's journey as a "personal" one, and notes that family will be one of the major overarching themes.

The chances of Bethany and Carver surviving as companions past the Lothering just went up a bit.

Thanks for the link!

I'm becoming increasingly optimistic about this game. Now all I want is to hear Hawke's voice actors.

thank you... them saying empty environments are ok is kind of unsettling, but hey, so long as i get my handsomer and prettier PCs, i guess i can sacrifice ambience and environment...

"And the truth of the matter is what videogames are about, especially story-based games, is they're about characters. They're not really about environments.

:-)

Well that's in direct contradiction to what Gaider says about Thedas being the main character of DA.

No, not really.
Enviroments: The level design.
Thedas: The history and culture of a fictional continent.

One thing I have noticed about Biowares PR is that they are inconsistent in what they say, I swear look back at Mass effect 2. I wouldnt trust anything they say until I see it for myself, I am not trying to diss Bioware as whole here but they are sometimes full of it.

Edit: What I mean about Mass effect 2 was the fact that they kept talking about the decisions and stuff when they did not have any real impact, They were also very quiet on how much they changed until the game was released and it ended up being more of a Gears of war type game instead of an RPG.

DA is an heroic fantasy game. Charachters (ie: exceptional individuals like the Warden, Hawke, Morrigain, Loghain and Alistair) shape the history of Thedas. The charachters can change, while Thedas remains.

Fascinating stuff. Especially the bit about decisions having a tangible effect on how our Hawkes respond and evolve. Personal themes such as family should be very effective. I'm also getting more and more convinced that the combat system will be something I can enjoy. I get a feeling that it can have a very cool, responsive feel without being a disorienting hackfest. :)

I felt that kills in DAO was very satisfying though since you planned it out how to kill them, it seems DA2 is more like Assasin's creed/Enslaved/Zelda like in fighting, which I find way too easy.

But again, judging anything before being able to see anything in game is too hasty, so im not going to go all crazy.. YET.. Muahaha.. <.<

From the article it seems it's less a matter of "can't" and more of "do not want"

It sounds funny as hell, Varric over exaggerating your ability, "He was quick like lightning, slashing the dusters into little bits that you choke on, IT WAS INSANE!" "Wait, wait, let's get real now..."

Nice Find.

Still, its really a bunch of stuff we've heard before more or less. The whole tracking of dialogue choices sounds interesting- I just hope that just because maybe you choose a sarcastic choice a bunch early on that doesn't mean that maybe an angry choice or something gets locked off later on.

I'm not caring for the art direction or their desire for more austere environments- I thought the environments in Origins were already fairly simple and boring mostly, whats DA2 going to be like? Hopefully we'll see more in some gameplay.

I just hope there is some solid exploration in DA2- from most of the previews it seems like its all combat then talk, comabt, talk, switch to Varric and Cassandra, then combat, talk...

One question I have though is with the exaggerated flashbacks- how does inventory and such work there? Or just in general with the flashbacks? Will our inventory constantly be emptied or generically restocked throughout each of the flashbacks?

Austere environments, wave after wave of enemies, single button push = chunks horde of baddies into gibs ... meh. Surely they're exaggerating? ... right? <|8b

Thanks for the link. However, I saw nothing there to dissuade from the impression that this is a dumbed down version aimed at "Joe Sixpack".
