I just got the game today, and it finally finished downloading. I go to the play screen, and I get this stupid error message. I am completely frustrated because even after updating my video card and rebooting, I still cannot play the game! Please help? Image IPB

Windows XP
Intel 82945G Express Chipset Family
DirectX 9.0

If you need any other info, let me know.
& Just for clarification - I get the message after I've pressed "play", but nothing happens after. I just get the window.

Most newer game do not support integrated graphic chips. You will most likely need a dedicated vido card to run this game.

Xenpo is correct, you'll have to buy a stand alone graphics card or a new system... what are your other system specs so we can try to help you find the right option?

Let's see...

Processor: Intel Pentium D CPU 2.8 GHz

Memory: 2038MB RAM

What else do you need?

Recommended video cards -

ATI Radeon HD 3850 512MB or better.
NVIDIA 8800GTS 512MB or better.

Nothing about onboard integrated graphic cards. They're not for playing high end games.

Try to lower the video settings (especially texture details).

Lowering video settings didn't help.

Are the majority of you telling me I don't have the basic requirements?

Just before I say no, where did you learn your integrated graphic card was supported by the game? Is there a list of cards BioWare posted about?

The recommended list I posted about are in the system requirements on the back of the DVD box for the game.

if you have an intel video card, it will not run.

You need an actual physical video card at least off geforce 6+ or ati 1+ series.

Unless you did upgrade to a physical stand alone graphic card? If YES, your BIOS might not auto detect it and still have you using your onboard motherboard graphic card.

I installed today and am getting the same error. I have an ATI Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition 256MB video card.

The Dragon Age minimum specs (on the web site, the packaging, the manual, etc.) specifically cite this video card -- ATI X850 -- in the minimum specs.

Can someone from Bioware please let me know what I need to do to get past this error?

ati2dvag.dll CATALYST 0 [6.14.10.6490]

The DAO Config Utility says:

There is a newer driver available for your display adapter. Dragon Age: Origins may perform better if you update your driver to the newest version. Please see your hardware vendor's website for further information on obtaining the required drivers.

...buit when I try to update the driver via Windows device manager, it tells me i have the latest.

Try running the install, if that doesn't work, you may have to unintstall the older drivers, restart and install the newer ones via device manager later. You probably still want the catalyst suite though.

I was able to manually find/install newer driver -- 8.593.100.0 -- which is the version the ATI web site steered me to for the card I have. Still no luck.

Thank you for the link to the Version 9 stuff. I'll try that tomorrow, though I'm afraid it may not fly with a card as old as the X850...or their site would've steered me there...theoretically...or at least should have... Hopefully they're just negligent in making that site update and it'll work fine!... :o)

It's still a radeon series so it should work as long as you choose the right OS install. Looked up your card on the main AMD site and it sent me to a 9.8 version download link. I assume it just hasn't been updated as frequently as the other link I gave you which has 9.10. Here's the other link just in case.

Actually it looks like 9.8 is the latest yours will go to.

Cheers.

Yes, the 9.8 "Legacy" version of the suite is where the site led me -- and is what I first downloaded/installed (followed by an update via Device Manager). This is what resulted in the 8.593.100.0 version of the driver itself being installed.

I just went and downloaded the 9.10 version of the suite which you linked to above. While it downloaded, I looked at the documentation for it. Indeed the x850 is NOT on the list of supported cards. Doh!

And sure enough, when I went to install it, it wouldn't let me. No supported devices found.

All this having been said, though, the error that Dragon Age is giving when I try to play it is not one that says to upgrade my driver. It's one that says it failed to detect a supported video card. And yet the card itself is the one SPECIFICALLY listed in the minimum specs on the web site, on the packaging, etc. This being the case -- and since I now have the latest possible drivers for this card -- it really seems like it should run!

Now what?!

I'm going to sleep!

...but tomorrow -- then what?!

Maybe the issue is that the x850 is supported but the x850 XT is not as they did not think to include it as there are less of them or something.

You could always try to uninstall via device manager and/or using the ATI uninstall utility and try again.

Otherwise, you will have to goto the EA support page and fill out a form there. Sorry I can't be of more use than that.

@ Fooboo

Do you use ATI tray tools? Theres an option in the game profiles under Direct3D tweaks to fool Direct3D as to what video card it is. For the the Manufacturer just use 1002 (generic ATI). For the device ID i found some you might want to try :

x850 XT - 4B49
x850 XT (PCI-E) - 5B52
x850 Pro - 4B4B
x1600 Pro - 71C2

Hope that makes sense, and hope it helps!

Thanks, guys.

Twainer -- Catalyst Control Center is installed (version 2009.0721.1107.18080), but I've looked everywhere and can't find any option that allow me to tell Direct3D that it's a different card as you describe above

I may try uninstalling and reinstalling as Kalimark suggests. More likely, I think I just need to buy a new video card..
