Duh...I didn't realize ATI Tray Tools was actually a separate piece of software. Thought you just meant the ATI controls accessible via the ATI systray icon. I have installed ATI Tray Tools -- will tinker around to see if any of these options works (1002 + 4B49 did not...) Thanks for this suggestion. Hopefully this will help...

Nope. None of those 4 options worked (re: ATI Tray Tools settings). Where can I find the list of device IDs and VendorIDs you're referencing, so I can try different combinations?

OP sounds like you need to purchase a video card and install it in your machine. The ones built into your computer for purchase is only for basic things like doing office work, web browsing, etc. It does not meet gaming requirements for this or most games in fact.

@Foobo- Have you checked the read me included in the game? There are some system requirement changes in there that I believe are the most recent ones released right as the game disks went gold. Alot of people aren't meeting those requirements and are unfortunately going off the websites older ones.

**edit: Here are the minimum specs from the read me guys. I figured I would copy and paste them for everyone instead of making you hunt them down.

System Requirements
=====================================================================

Windows XP
----------
OS:     Windows XP with SP3
CPU:    Intel Core 2 (or equivalent) running at 1.6Ghz or greater
        AMD 64 (or equivalent) running at 2.2Ghz or greater
RAM:    1 GB or more
Video:  ATI Radeon X850 128MB or greater;
        NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT 128MB or greater.

Windows Vista
-------------
OS:     Windows Vista with SP1
CPU:    Intel Core 2 (or equivalent) running at 1.8Ghz or greater
        AMD 64 (or equivalent) running at 2.6Ghz or greater
RAM:    1.5 GB or more
Video:  ATI Radeon X1550 256MB or greater;
        NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT 256MB or greater.

NOTES: For the best results, make sure you have the latest drivers
       for your video and audio cards.

       Laptop or mobile versions of the above supported video cards
       have not had extensive testing and may have driver or other
       performance issues. As such, they are not officially supported
       in Dragon Age: Origins.

       Intel and S3 video cards are not officially supported in
       Dragon Age: Origins.

       Hercules Game Theater XP (External), Hercules Gamesurround
       Fortissimo III, Hercules Digifire 7.1 and Hercules
       Gamesurround Muse XL audio devices are not supported in
       Dragon Age: Origins.

       Please see the Known Issues section, below, for more details.<3

Yes, dragoaskani, the ReadMe (as you post above) says: "Windows XP - Video: ATI Radeon X850 128MB or greater".

Mine is an ATI Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition 256MB.

Should work. But no.

I have tried designating various other cards via ATI Tray Tools (found a list of device codes), but this does not work either.

Hmm I dunno then. I run with my 4 year old 8800 gtx ultra...I am kinda an Nvidia fan boy of sorts...so I have no experience with your ATI products, I gave them up about 9 years ago.

Thanks, guys.
Twainer -- Catalyst Control Center is installed (version 2009.0721.1107.18080), but I've looked everywhere and can't find any option that allow me to tell Direct3D that it's a different card as you describe above
I may try uninstalling and reinstalling as Kalimark suggests. More likely, I think I just need to buy a new video card..

Although ATI isn't trying to continue supporting the X000 series, neither are they supporting Win2000, my own preferred OS for day to day activity.  I used the Omega Radeon drivers instead of the stock ATI set, and my X850 XT- Platinum is happy as can be -- the thing about the X000 cards is that they stopped at Dx9.0"b", rather than "C", and that's just short of the best SM3 shaders in Direct3D.

DA:O only has low settings for SM3"b", but once you have functional drivers, you'll be fine.

Thank you, Gorath. Sounds like just the ticket! I will hunt down the Omega Radeon drivers and give it a try...

The really amazing thing about them is how few people (among gamers, anyway) there are who are aware that such things are out there!  I suppose the fact that games are what give me my excuse to play with PCs, rather than being what I would rather not have to do is the difference.  I like computers, and games are something that I can do with my hardware.  I'm just a little weak on the software side, any more!

I want to edit this to add something not included previously, and I know this is now getting quite old.  Perfectly decent video cards can be labelled as undetected under certain circumstances.  The game is querying the Direct3D APIs that Windows uses, and those are using the video drivers to get information, so there is a three-way linkage, and three places to have a communication failure.

The easiest one of the three to deal with is drivers, of course, but if that isn't good enough, then the next step is a new install of Dx9 (and it makes no difference if you use Vista or Windows 7, Dx9 is still required).  If those two fixes don't do it, quite rarely, the PhysX system needs a reinstall, last, the game itself must be reinstalled.

P. S.  Just in case anyone new pulls up this thread in a search sweep for the error message involved, there are other causes for the error message to appear besides the purely mechanical failure of the graphics hardware, or a software screwup in drivers + Direct3D + game.  You also can't mix screen settings among various types of display ratios.  Check other threads from the search you've made for more information.
