I'm really curious to play a arcane warrior mage however even looking at some builds on other websites I have a hard time understanding things like rotation. I saw one build that allows you to pump strength in A LOT, I don't see a point other than sucking yet having cool looking armor....but I could be  very wrong.

Tips?

With AW, you can use your magic level to wear the good armours.

Well theres more then one way to skin a cat as it were. The vast majority of builds around teh net are for Arcane Warrior/Blood Mages and assume your going to meleeing everything and barly casting any magic.

Theres other builds for Caster Arcane Warriors (Mage Tanks) out there that are just as good and definetly kill things faster.

You can use magic instead of strength to meet requirements on gear.

If you are going to play a AW mage that will use spells for damage then I suggest that this http://dragonage.wik...ll_Combinations is worth a look.

The basic spells are fairly easy to read about but there are also 10 special/ hidden Spell Combinations in the game that are VERY powerful.

I'm leaning toward being a melee/tank AW Mage actually...but that's a nice link thanks!

AW tanking is kinda dull considering there is just auto-attack, or auto-attack + Haste. I recommend spells, and going to a weapon if desired or needed.

How well do AW tanks hold aggro, anyway? They don't seem to be capable of putting out much damage.

Some spells can generate a lot of dmg, which seems to draw attn from enemies.

The AW can take the damage very well. I think most people look at that when saying it can tank.

Really depends on your preferred playing style. If you want to cast lots of spells then treat your AW as just a normal mage who won't die quite so quickly if you get stuck in melee; give them light/medium armour (Varathorn's works particularly well) and your choice of melee weapons (look for items with +stamina as this will boost mana for an AW) and then carry on as normal.

If you wanna be an AW tank though then make sure you learn spells that boost defence/armour, stick on some heavy armour and a sword and shield (Wade's Dragonscale heavy armour with Evon the great's mail swapped in, plus Spellweaver and The Fade Wall is my combo - and it works darn well!) then buff yoursefl up and go tanking. I use Combat Magic + Shimmering Shield + Arcane Shield + Rock Armour + Death Syphon (to keep up the mana so defence spells don't deplete) and it gives me 100 mental resistance, physical resistance and defence, and 75% on all magic resistances - i.e. incredibly hard to kill.

Obviously all those buffs use LOTS of mana so don't expect to cast lots of spells - I use the occasional cone of cold if I need CC or walking bomb if I need to draw threat.

It's fair to say that your DPS isn't going to be massive though - I've stuck a couple of high-level runes on my sword and I get around 40-50 damage per hit, with maybe a hit every 2 secs? depends on the enemy obviously.

This approach also makes it possible to solo a lot of fights, if that appeals to you... Personally I (accidentally!) solo'd an encounter with ~25 city guards in the back streets of Denerim (too much pickpocketing!) and barely took a hit.

I can see why people would think it's dull (it's pretty slow), but I enjoyed it ;)

I just finished the new Golem DLC with a 25th lvl mage right out of DAO, and she is an AW/SH caster. While I can use massive armor if desired (ie; I keep Cailans set around for special occasions), I actually play mostly in Reapers robes, felon's Coat, or the new Lil Song DLC chestpiece.

Indeed.  The problem with playing an Arcane Warrior as mostly warrior is they get neither weapon talents nor backstabbing.  100% auto-attack = boring.  I recommend playing as mostly arcane - nuke 'em with spells, then when mana gets low, switch to weapons to clean up.

My AW can go pure caster or melee as the situation warrants.

Usually, start with an Inferno followed by an Earthquake. Whatever is left of the enemy mob gets hit by a Fireball that blows them back into the Inferno. After that, I draw sword and mercy-kill whatever staggers out to me. Really . . . most are near death by the time they get to me.

Oh, also use Telekinetic weapons to increase my damage. AW's can use Poison too, if you think to get 1 level in that Skill.- adds a chance to stun opponents without expending mana.

My Shimmering Shield and Rock Armour give me an armor rating of 56 which is practically untouchable - ignore arrows for the most part. Worst enemy is a pure mage who I usually hit first with Crushing Prison (no LOS required) or Petrify.

I find that AW is better played as a caster because they have very low attack and simply misses too much, especially against rogue base enemies - unless you invest a lot in DEX which will leave you with low spellpower or low mana.

Low spellpower means your spells are easier to resists and does not do much damage. Low mana means you cannot keep all the sustained skills and have mana left for anything - unless you play BloodMage or get the Blood Taint skill from Soldier's Peak.

My AW almost always uses Evon's Great Mail with Wade's Heavy Dragonscale to get the set bonus which pretty much means - Armor rating that is as good as Massive Armor nearly no fatigue.

I like to have high spellpower so I can aoe kill all mages/shades/demons/etc with a single mana clash that mobs cant resists 99% of the time, Cone of Cold, summon Skeleton Captain, Arcane Prison, Glyph mass paralysis combo... basically... Can kill most things half asleep. With 60+ Armor, most mobs does 1-5 damage from me.. nothing a heal or regeneration cannot fix. Also like to duel wield with 6 spell resists rune.

My build is Magic > Willpower > Con, yes - need con, Ogre/Golem Ram and Slam is very very painful even through 65 Armor >.<
