I like how Priestly locked the other more recent Steam threads saying only one thread per topic at a time, when this one is really old. They'll probably close this one for being necro-bumped, and then they will conveniently have no active discussion on why DA2 isn't on Steam.

I noticed that too, maybe they didn't want me telling everybody with the horrible experiences I have had with the EA store.

Well THank you Bioware, you've gone to far, I supported your efforts, I've even gone so far as to edit My sig!!

You chose not to sell through Steam, I chose NOT TO BUY YOUR SOFTWARE!!!

CLEAR ENOUGH??!!!
GOODBYE!!

Yeah, I feel the same. It's too bad because I'm a sucker for DLC. Have fun when the statistics come in and find out that you actually lost money. I hope the executive that made this decision gets fired for this.

Or maybe it's just because that's what he is supposed to do when those things happen.

You must be a paid advocate for them, because every post I have read recently you make about DA2 not being on steam is a "who cares" impression.

Is everything some sort of conspiracy to you?

Actually yes, its a marketing practice that makes sense. Just like how there are some users in hardware forums that advocate certain products because they are paid or rewarded to do so.

.... is buying a physical copy really that big a deal in today's society? Or is it more a "well, I won't buy through EA's store" thing?

It is, actually. Optical disc drives are just...old and slow when you compare it to the modern options that we have availiable today. I don't even have an optical disc drive installed in my PC today, it's time for them to get phased out imo. ;)

Edit: Removing some things. I hope they will release SE content later as DLC.

Go ahead and use whatever excuse you need to support your bias.

The other thread was closed because someone restarted the Steam thread (this thread) that was already open. We do this with all topics, not just this issue, so knock off the "conspiracy" nonsense. This thread won't get closed barring people breaking the forum rules.

I seriously can't understand how people can consider they own something digitally. If I can't hold the original disk, what's the point in buying?

You buy a CD-key, the disc isn't something you need today. Why buy it? Because you want your developer to continue to publish great games, simple as that.

They can take the download server off the net. They can't take away my disk. If I'm downloading, I'm not buying, simple as that.

Ha ha...them convenience of Steam is overwhelming

You buy a game and updates DLC, etc are automatically applied in the background, whether or not you are aware of them

If you are mobile or travelling, you do not have to haul around a boatload of discs to play your games

Steam often has wonderful sales going on

What's not to like?

I bought Assassin's Creed II off the shelf at Fry's.  Turns out the DRM code had been hacked and the disc was a very expensive frisbee.  Did I ever actually own the game?

The fact that there is no real, solid article in your hands. The fact that they charge the same prize as the retail version when there's no production costs associated.

That's because DRM is the worst concept ever imagined by a bunch of greedy suits.

Well, there are costs associated with distributing something digitally:  Maintaining servers, paying for bandwidth use, etc.  Downloading something doesn't exactly spring up from the ground.  It requires infrastructure just as much as physical game copies.

And
I think owning a digital version of a game is no different than owning a
physical disk, because it's use is strictly bound to agreeing with the
Terms of Use.  They may be worded differently
between physical and digital but those terms must be accepted regardless
of physical product or not.

Of course there are advantages and disadvantages to digital copies vs. disc copies, but there is pro/con weight decision that is based off each consumer and his/her specific circumstances.  Have high-speed interenet all the time?  You should be okay with digital distribution.  Don't have High-speed internet all the time?  Get a disc copy.  Like having a box collection?  Buy a disc copy.  Like having everything organized for you by STEAM?  Buy from STEAM.  The list just keeps going for both sides.

+1. I don't think it's helping anyone, especially not the horrible versions of DRM (Hi Ubisoft!).

Naturally the fact that you don't own a disc can be troublesome if the servers would be shut down, but as you still have your key you just need the install files but I don't think that will be a problem. The best would be if games could be bought as a physical copy and then registered online, some companies use this and I hope more will follow. In the end all you want is a happy customer. :)

The only reason I have a Steam account is because Dawn of War II and Civilization V use the system you mention. It doesn't add anything to me. Other than a weird glitch with Civ V's installation that had it download its content from the net rather than using the disk the first time, which wouldn't happen if steam wasn't involved in the equation. The reinstall after formatting this holidays didn't do it, thankfully enough.

Ever read your ToS? Even when you buy a physical copy, you aren't actually buying the game, you're buying the right to play and own the game. Thats how they punish file sharers. Thats why you can't legally copy the game and give it to a friend.

Get your master accounts banned then tell me you "own the game" when they require you to activate a new key to bind the game to the account.

In the end it's practical in a business sense, but it severely infringes on the consumers rights. Regardless, it's the standard. You could either
A) Go full out open source, install Linux and Firefox, and support indie games.
B) Accept that this, at least, won't change, and oppose oppressive DRM and ilk
C) Call your congressman and tell him you want Copyright Reform now. Sweden already has a political party dedicated to it, but good luck getting the USA government to do jack **** without being a 6 figure donor, or getting an honest Copyright Reform supporter elected.

I'm spanish. The supreme court here ruled in court that file sharing is legal. Cancelling my accounts would be akin to theft, making them the criminals, not me.

It's the only gaming platform I own, and it's one I use extensively. I tend to avoid games that use GfWL and Steam activations when I can, though.

I do. Two-to-three hours each workday, and a couple more per day in weekends.
