+1. I don't think it's helping anyone, especially not the horrible versions of DRM (Hi Ubisoft!).
Naturally the fact that you don't own a disc can be troublesome if the servers would be shut down, but as you still have your key you just need the install files but I don't think that will be a problem. The best would be if games could be bought as a physical copy and then registered online, some companies use this and I hope more will follow. In the end all you want is a happy customer.
The only reason I have a Steam account is because Dawn of War II and Civilization V use the system you mention. It doesn't add anything to me. Other than a weird glitch with Civ V's installation that had it download its content from the net rather than using the disk the first time, which wouldn't happen if steam wasn't involved in the equation. The reinstall after formatting this holidays didn't do it, thankfully enough.
But it does. If you're not at home and you want to continue your Civ V campaign you can easily do that. I don't exactly know how Steam handles it but you should be able to choose if you want to install it with disc or download, like Blizzard's system, Steam should be the same (?).
I do think we've gone a bit off-topic now though..

For new comers, it's been confirmed SE won't be on Steam, and some of us have been emailing this guy notifying him of our discontent. I encourage you all to join in, and if you do to please remain civil and professional. Don't be rash or rude, that's not how you make your voices heard.
Removing Andrew's name. Andrew is on our PR team, but he does not deal
with fans. That is my job. Emails or calls to Andrew will be ignored. ../../../images/forum/emoticons/devil.png

Secondly, hard copies nowadays require activation the same as digital copies. If the activation server is down, your physical copy is just as worthless as your digital copy.
I've also sent an email to the PR guy about DA2 SE on Steam.

Just keeping this on the relevant page:

E-mailed. Did my part for DA2 on Steam!

Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2 do not require online activation.

If you want the DLC they do.

Chris Priestly, fair enough that you have no information about DA2 on Steam. But could you please find out by asking your contacts (Fernando Melo? EA?) if DA2 will come to Steam after the 11th?
Surely someone must know. After all, DA2 on Steam has been discussed at Bioware and/or EA headquarters. Otherwise, how else could the decision have been reached that the Signature Edition won’t come to Steam? So it’s hard to believe that the question of DA2 on Steam after the 11th has not been discussed at Bioware/EA.
...
almighty.zer got a support ticket from EA, but who knows if or when there'll be a helpful response; since you work for Bioware, you're a much better bet.
That's a good point, biomar. But hm, still no response.

If I pre-order a physical copy, will I have to keep the disc in my drive to play? It's been so long since I've used any discs, I'm almost completely converted to Steam.
Seeing that we're mostly all Steam users, this thread probably isn't the best place to ask

Thanks for posting this. And yes, the eager fans thing is very ironic. Have you had any luck with a response from Mr Wong?

Also, make sure to clarify that we want the SE edition on Steam, as it should be.
Yes, this is important. I better get writing, and I'd encourage any one else who feels that Steam users are equally deserving of the eager fan signature edition reward, to do the same.

I'm always checking my email, and no word yet. I simply expressed my discontent that a SE is not planned for Steam and asked him whether he has any information at all as to what is headed to Steam for us Dragon Age 2 fans. Who knows, if they receive enough emails expressing this discontent for no SE on Steam then they might recognize that they have to do something about it because there's a big market out there on Steam.

Priestly, how much is EA paying you to keep this a secret? Whatever it is, I'll double it! All you have to do is make it an unsecret.

Yes. DA:O required the disk on tray; although once installed, you could use either the DA:O basic or DA:A disk interchangablealy. Since I tend to play one game at a time and finish it before moving to the next, it hardly was a problem to me.

EA BioWare would be foolish to not have DA2 on Steam, they will have DA2 on Steam. The issue is they don't have the SE on Steam.
what'd be a real smack in the face would be if it goes up on Steam on January 12th

. . . for cheaper than anywhere else . . . with all the SE content, just not being called the SE . . . plus some extra content on top of that . . . and you get to download and play it early . . .

If you're willing to give up the 4 in-game items and soundtrack, you won't have to miss out on the bonus character if you're willing to pay $7 (probably points though, as opposed to an actual $7).
This may be good news for those who don't mind giving up some of the SE stuff and some extra cash to get it on Steam (if it comes to Steam).
It's still not a good situation and doesn't take away from everything else that has been said in this thread, but it may be an option for some people.

There are more options.
1. Dont buy it at all.
2. Wait till the Dragon Age 2 Ultimate Edition comes on steam and goes on supersale.
Too bad, since I have DAO plus exp on Steam. I think ill go for option two. If it never comes to steam, then I guess ill have more money for beer.
