Pausing game cause enemies to stop casting spells?

Hi everyone,
This is my second playthrough of BG 1 & TOSC. I've noticed some kind of problem in the game, mainly in battles.
I'm sure that, if I PAUSE the game WHEN an enemy is casting spell, it's likely that he/she will STOP the casting (like being disrupted). Preventing enemies from throwing spells with the Space Bar... It feels like cheating. There were many battles where I had to fight in real time, just trying to be fair. Well it's ok if the enemies are powerful enough so that their casting can never be disrupted, even with a Space Bar.
Generally, I find this a bit uncomfortable. I don't recall if this was the case in my first playthrough. I don't know if this is normal... or is it just me?

Now that's a weird bug. Do you have any modifications installed?

I've noticed it too sometimes... it's a BG1 bug and even the latest patch doesn't fix it... I don't think it's a mod, no.

Does it happen with Tutu/BGT, or with an oldfashioned pure install?

Well actually in this second playthrough I have installed BG1 Fixpack 1.1 and Game Text Update from Baldurdash, BG1 Unfinished Business, and several other fixes from the Infinity Engine Modding Fixpack. I don't know if any of these has something to do with this bug. I just wanted to have a version of BG1 that's closest to perfect - as few bugs as possible - but not too heavily modified.

After finishing the game this time I will move on to BG II and see if the same thing happens.

Not sure about that. Should reinstall and try it... hmmm...

In BG2 it shouldn't happen, at least, not that I am aware of. But I played old pure 100% vanilla BG1 back in January and recall this bug happening.

I have just confirmed this bug taking place in vanilla BG1 engine only. Weaker enemy mages(like Thalantyr) get interrupted by pausing during their casting. Auto-pausing also does this. More powerful mages like Gorion won't get interrupted. Tested both vanilla bg1 with official patches only and also with modded vanilla bg1(baldurdash, dudleyfix, UB, bg1tweaks and widescreen mod). Also tested that this bug is not present in BG1 when using BGT.

This is a bit disappointing finding for me as I'm one of the rare ones who prefer vanilla BG1....

*offtopic*

Can someone tell me what spawning setting to use in BGT if you want the spawns to be as similar as possible as in vanilla bg1? I don't really care about respawning but the default enemy groups in BGT are a bit too big...

Any other advices on how to make BGT install play like vanilla BG1 as much as possible are welcome :P

I don't know how the spawning in BGT works, though in vanilla BG1 it depends on the difficulty, like 4 Hobgoblin Elites (in a spawn point) in Core Rules setting and 10 (if I remember correctly) if I increase the difficulty by one notch, in the same area. About mods for this, I know the BGSpawn mod for BGT. I haven't tried this myself (still playing The Original Saga)
About how to make BGT play like vanilla BG1, I'd say just try to play it like you played the original one.
Anyway, the problem pausing game cause enemies to stop casting spells is normal after all, right? Thanks for confirming.

Yep. It seems. I can't find any other sources of confirmation for this problem though. In my testing full auto-pausing interrupts the spell casting quite frequently, making this the last straw for me to move to BGT :(

So BGT doesn't have this bug? Maybe I'll try BGT or EasyTutu, to be rid of this. I did install EasyTutu once but after a few minutes playing I uninstall it, because I felt only the 'good old' graphic could give me some kind of unique feeling as well as atmosphere, like the first time I played the game. Besides, in EasyTutu, one of the first things I noticed is that the Composite Long Bow requires a strength of 17 or higher to use (so my old character couldn't use it anymore). Only BGII has this, old BG1 doesn't.

Anyway, I've just decided to give BGT a shot. I've heard experiencing the BG saga as one whole game is incredible.

I'm a bit amazed this bug has not been covered before and this thread getting so little replies. Vanilla BG1 players a dead breed?

Maybe it's an engine limitation and there's no helping it. Anyway, thanks for your replies : D

I would assume that it's more an engine incompability with a modern computer/OS - since if that bug had existed 10 years ago, even BioWare would have considered patching it.

As a point of interest, I came across this problem with BG1 back in 2003 when I was writing a very early version of (what would become) Sword Coast Stratagems. It's the main reason I gave up writing AI for vanilla BG1 and moved over to BG1TUTU.
