Zevran just thinks he's dalish, however, and doesn't affect their quests much.

Also, it's great to take two characters who you are romancing simultaneously. Morrigan and Leliana is popular, but Morrigan and Zevran is rather nice.
But the best character for dialogue is Loghain, especially with Zevran!

If the qunari intrigue you, take Sten with you. He has dialogue options that can only be asked after ambient background comments.

Anders and the dalish mage in awakenings too.
Would like to try the golem and the qunari.

All of the characters have pretty good depth once you get their approval ratings up. I'll never know with Wynne because I hate that old bat and I kill her when I do the Circle Tower quest line. It was Hate-At-First-Sight when I saw her in Ostagar, then I talked to her and wished she was permanently stuck in the Fade as a crab with no legs. Upside down. With seagulls eating her legs in front of her. Forever.
Yeah, I don't like Wynne . . . lol

My current character is a Dalish Ranger with an bitter, spiteful outlook on life. I am using Morrigan, Zevran and plug and pull other characters in and out to taste. Usually Dog, but sometimes Shale or Sten. I am surprised how much I like Zevran. I always considered his character rather toolish, but, hey. He kills stuff good.

Sten also got his first chance to prove his worth to me. He's proven far less whiny, and I like him so far.
But my favorites are:
Alistair, Leliana and Wynne (just because she has good support spells early).

I'm trying to get the most out of Morrigan's spells and set her up to use Horror on enemy mages and Winter's Grasp along with liberal use of Regeneration and Heal. Seems to work well, but it takes a long time to get all the good healing spells and Haste because Morrigan's spells are spread so randomly.

I am indifferent towards Shale and Zevran.
I dislike Sten and Wynne.

Alistair is the most plot-relevant companion in the game. While it generally doesn't make a difference to have him in your party since you still get his story branch anyways, I just can't seem to leave him behind from an RP perspective.
Morrigan is the second most relevant character, and she's an interesting one at that. I've romanced her twice and I generally find that she is more interesting to romance than Leliana. I never play without my romantic interest in my party - call it the Baldur's Gate II effect.
Leliana always serves as my Rogue, and her archery becomes pretty useful later in the game. She's the "good girl" type that I romance on my more virtuous characters, but it feels like it's missing something compared to Morrigan's - especially after Witch Hunt.
Wynne is a boring character, but she can specialize in Blood Magic to become an effective Healer and Damager. Still, I'll generally take Morrigan over her most of the time.

I'm starting a mage playthrough and so far I like taking Alistair, Sten and Zevran around.
Sten is good at two-handed weapons, and Zevran is ridiculously awesome once you level him up a bit.
However, overall, my most favorite characters are Zevran, Sten, Alistair and Wynne. I really like Wynne, I dunno why, lol!

It gives me no end of amusement that you can turn Wynne into a Blood Mage.

The irony it creates is pretty amazing.
