Keep in mind that for full immersion, you'll want Alistair in Redcliffe, Wynne in the Tower, and Oghren in the deep roads.

Zevran just thinks he's dalish, however, and doesn't affect their quests much.

I mix them up a lot, but certain characters banter well together. Alistair and Morrigan is perhaps the best. Sten and Shale work well together. Then again you find out a few interesting facts about Wynne if you team her up with Alistair, and about Sten if you team him with Zevran. I dislike taking Oghren because all his dialogue is leering and cringey. Zev can be quite a sex pest with female companions too.

Also, it's great to take two characters who you are romancing simultaneously. Morrigan and Leliana is popular, but Morrigan and Zevran is rather nice.

But the best character for dialogue is Loghain, especially with Zevran!

Alistair is my ultimate favourite, followed by the dog, Leliana & Wynne. I don't actually hate any of the party members.

If the qunari intrigue you, take Sten with you. He has dialogue options that can only be asked after ambient background comments.

:) And please, for those who haven't taken him all the way to 100% warm, don't let his initial reluctance to speak turn you off.  Talk to him more and make different choices.  There is humor and good meat and potatoes Qunari culture discussion later on that you don't want to miss.

Don't have much experience with many NPCs but favorite is Morrigan and after awakenings I came to kind of accept even the dwarf, for some comedy value, not that much though.
Anders and the dalish mage in awakenings too.
Would like to try the golem and the qunari.

Oghren gotta be the most awesome character I've met so far and his personality is rly cool actually he reminds me a bit of myself=P And his fighting style with two handed weps makes him quite usefull in combat and if u get to earn his trust he's the most loyal friend u could want in DA:O. But if I should mention two I rly dislike its gotta be Alistair and Zevran, Alistair is just so annoying with all his sarcastic smart-ass remarks and Zevran is just plain gay in my opinion.

Dog is my favorite and he's very versatile, but when I need to burn a target down his DPS is lacking compared to other characters. I love it when I have him Stun / Growl / Charge / Overwhelm an Elite Mage who's trying to cast a 5-second spell. lmao

All of the characters have pretty good depth once you get their approval ratings up. I'll never know with Wynne because I hate that old bat and I kill her when I do the Circle Tower quest line. It was Hate-At-First-Sight when I saw her in Ostagar, then I talked to her and wished she was permanently stuck in the Fade as a crab with no legs. Upside down. With seagulls eating her legs in front of her. Forever.

Yeah, I don't like Wynne . . . lol

My first Favorites were Leliana, Alister and Wynne. I just finished Origins tonight for the first time and I'm most certainly impressed, playing a human noble. Now I'm going to play as a Dalish... something about the Elves I find really cool. :)

Zev Og and Morri spice up any group by annoying the other party members.

I will join the club of returning player after some time away. My original playthrough I was all about Sten and Wynne. I thought they were pretty cool. I really like Wynne's character and her matronly way of voicing an opinion. I added Oghren to that bunch and it was just great.

My current character is a Dalish Ranger with an bitter, spiteful outlook on life. I am using Morrigan, Zevran and plug and pull other characters in and out to taste. Usually Dog, but sometimes Shale or Sten. I am surprised how much I like Zevran. I always considered his character rather toolish, but, hey. He kills stuff good.

I used Morrigan, Alistair and Wynne 90% of my first playthrough. Morri and Ali together is just so great. :D Will start a second, switching the last two for Sten and Leli probably, they seem interesting.

I am currently trying a playthrough with Morrigan in my party. But her poor spell selection (for a support mage) and tendency to whine about every single decision I make are getting on my nerves.

Sten also got his first chance to prove his worth to me. He's proven far less whiny, and I like him so far.

But my favorites are:

Alistair, Leliana and Wynne (just because she has good support spells early).

I used Morrigan as my main damage dealer, she just rocks for that. :D. When you get her to Inspired: Massive Magic, she can do great damage.

Yeah I know, but I need a support mage, and this playthrough I decided not to use Wynne.

I'm trying to get the most out of Morrigan's spells and set her up to use Horror on enemy mages and Winter's Grasp along with liberal use of Regeneration and Heal. Seems to work well, but it takes a long time to get all the good healing spells and Haste because Morrigan's spells are spread so randomly.

I love Morrigan for DD/CC. With the bonuses from Inspired along with Spell Wisp she has some serious DPS early in the game. I can get Inspired: Massive Magic before I finish any main quest. I think the lowest I've been was Level 8 for the fourth rank. Approval is 25/50/75/90 iirc, something like that. I get more bonuses from having conversations with her then anything else. Same with Sten.

Right now I always have Leliana, Wynne and Morrigan. I'm playing a 2H warrior, so Leli's song that speeds up movement and attack speed is a godsend. Having two mages produces hella damage/mob control.

For my DW HNM I used Alistar, Leliana, Morrigan as my primary and dropped Morrigan when you are forced to use Wynne and drop Alistar when you are forced to use anyone else. I need my two girls for magic, arrows and locks. I had alot of success in the final battle at level 22 with all my folks decked out. Got to love the love baby option.

I have used Alistair, Morrigan, and Leliana in two of my three playthroughs, swapping in Wynne when I beat the game using a S&S Warrior.

Alistair is the most plot-relevant companion in the game. While it generally doesn't make a difference to have him in your party since you still get his story branch anyways, I just can't seem to leave him behind from an RP perspective.

Morrigan is the second most relevant character, and she's an interesting one at that. I've romanced her twice and I generally find that she is more interesting to romance than Leliana. I never play without my romantic interest in my party - call it the Baldur's Gate II effect.

Leliana always serves as my Rogue, and her archery becomes pretty useful later in the game. She's the "good girl" type that I romance on my more virtuous characters, but it feels like it's missing something compared to Morrigan's - especially after Witch Hunt.

Wynne is a boring character, but she can specialize in Blood Magic to become an effective Healer and Damager. Still, I'll generally take Morrigan over her most of the time.

For fighting it depends on what type of character I'm playing.

I'm starting a mage playthrough and so far I like taking Alistair, Sten and Zevran around.

Sten is good at two-handed weapons, and Zevran is ridiculously awesome once you level him up a bit.

However, overall, my most favorite characters are Zevran, Sten, Alistair and Wynne. I really like Wynne, I dunno why, lol!

It gives me no end of amusement that you can turn Wynne into a Blood Mage. ;)

The irony it creates is pretty amazing.
