I havent seen filthy words like **** and **** or anything like it or heard a preview mention it. Now it is a mature game and lot of "grown ups" do swear in ****ed up situations, even though it is not looked upon as something "sophisticate ah whatever, it is powerwords adding your to your emotions
Have you heard if there is and curse language, swear words or what you call it in english in the game?

It's "ye olde" English cursing in that case. Not like in the witcher when they said the F word (looks silly to write it like that) twice per sentence.

They're censoring it even on their forums (For whatever mysterious reason), and in the books there was no strong language to be seen anywhere (Not even 'old timey' cursing, as far as I remember), for some reason BW apparently believes that cursing is a bad thing...

Well, swearing is considered something a kid should not even consider saying but I agree it does not make anyone more mature.

There are mature themes and I am sure there will be numerous occasions to hear a *** or two.

Also I hear a word I normally see cencored in Zev's trailer, so...yeah. ^_^

I think attitudes to this are going to vary a lot depending on your culture. I'm sure that British people would generally be happy with a mature game if swearing was used whenever it would occur naturally in conversation, and if no one made a big deal about it. Americans are probably more likely to see it as a big issue one way or the other.

I don't think frequent swearing is a sign of maturity. However, I will spoint out that the M rating includes a language descriptor, so I'm assuming some colorful metaphors will pop up if things call for it. However, they have said that they will not be using certain words that are in common modern usage for this because it felt anachronistic.

Not really the issue, swearing doesn't make anyone or -thing mature ('not swearing' doesn't either, btw), and nobody claimed it does. It just seems unnatural when you're playing a game, watching a movie or reading a novel with people getting into situations where every normal person on the face of the planet would swear, but talk like absolutely nothing happened.
Swearing for the sake of swearing is immature, holding on to the idea that swearing is never appropriate on the other hand is just a different flavor of immaturity.

An example where the issue was handled pretty well, in my humble yet utterly correct opinion, was 'Dead Like Me' (The series, not the bowdlerized movie), strong language was never used in an inflationary manner, but only characters with fitting personality (In particular the neurotic, prudish mother) abstained from it when it was appropriate. As a result the majority of the dialogue and banter felt very natural and charming, apart from being mostly dialogue between undead grim reapers, that is.

Of course, so far we have no idea how this is handled in DA:O, so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

dont know if you've seen the post about seemingly inoccent character names but one gamers character named Chardonnay was not allowed to be uploaded because it contained the words hard on

Yet she was allowed to upload a character named Woody..........LoL XD

seriously though its part of the original site mechanics and stuff way over my head technologically.

To bad you failed to see the whole point of my question altogether.. Otherwise it would have been a nice speech.

The question wasn't about if there should be or if it was realistic in any given situation. It was if cursing is actually needed.

The obvious answer is that its not needed to maintain a mature theme. But it can add to the flavor and how believable various situations end up being.

For example, The Whitcher went to far with the whole swearing. Although not among my first complaints about that game, actually I'd not put it in the top 5 complaints. Might not even make the top 10. But they did take it too far and in doing so diminished the value off the entertainment.

Flamin Jesus wins the thread. I think swearing contributes to a game, The whole game industry has been censored far too long, because it has been seen as something for kids.

If you play as an evil character you would like to threaten and be vulgar, that would add to the coulour palette of morality etc. It is ridiculus to see someone use mild language when you would like to scream ****!! in agony and frustration. The PC should be able to be a shadow of yourself...

Yet another who fail to see my point. Although I've run out off patience trying to explain it to people who clearly don't want to see anything but their own point off view. So my final word on the subject is this.

Foul language is not needed, especially not just for the foul language's sake.

Foul language added in to spice up the reality of a character, sure.

Overdoing foul language for any reason just ends up being childish.

Yes I agree, Someone swearing too much shows a lack of impuls control wich could seem like childish or sick but if you play as a psychotic you would like to be able to be true to your character in that way.

well at least I do hope they got some nice insults and evil stuf t say to annoying dwarfes in the game.

I'm right, you're wrong! Silence!

I understood you just fine, but perhaps I failed to make my point simple or clear enough to be understood by some people, so let me reiterate in simpler terms:
Swearing is not needed to make things mature, it is needed to make a mature world believable and atmospheric, however. It's bad if it is overdone, just like it's bad if it's avoided for no atmospheric reason.

Foul language is not needed, especially not just for the foul language's sake.
Foul language added in to spice up the reality of a character, sure.
Overdoing foul language for any reason just ends up being childish.

If this is your opinion, I indeed DO fail to understand why you felt the need to reiterate it, since it is rather close to what I just said. ;)

Fictional digital people in a completely made-up setting who get hit with melee weapons... don't necessarily have to swear. Another true story. ;)

It seems that in the past few years games get mature ratings if they have just hints of nudity in them. Violence doesn't usually seem to matter when it comes to ratings.. especially in america..language matters a little more but show a little digital cleavage and people get outraged. I'm betting the mature rating is for the partial nudity and sexual content.. not the blood, violence and language.

Why is that. Why is the greatest gift we have, that of creating life so prohibited evil sinfull and disgusting. Lust and pleasure so dark ad gritty ugly.. Some kind of population control, nah..

Abaout langauge good to know they got some ESRB rating on it though.. make´s me feel good and confortable.
