Women have curves.  Women's body types are different than men's.  Ergo, they need differently shaped armor.  I don't understand what is so difficult to comprehend about this.  Simply acknowledging that women do in fact have breasts and hips does mean anything is being oversexualized.  And besides, both the male and female sets of armor make your Shepard look great, but I don't see anyone complaining that male Shepard's armor sexualizes him just because he has a broad manly chest and strong shoulders.

This. I'm a woman and I want my Shep to look like woman. I can think  of a lot over-sexualized women in video games, but my Shep is not one of them.

I assume that the armour is more comfortable for the soldier, as it fits their body tighter.

thank you lol. is been impossible to get people to get that  :P.

The tigther the fit, the more flexible it is... why because it contours to your natural outline whether is male or female.

Putting aside, protection and ventilation though :P

Considering that marines have to operate and fight in space and other locations with differing gravitational and environmental conditions, I'm sure that female marines would prefer armour that allows them to move as freely as possible. Any armour that is loose over someone's body means the weight is poorly distributed.

and 100 years in the future, with alien technology would have solved the platemail like armor issue we have today.

loose armor would also create very dangerous gaps in between the armor and the plating.  modern body armor is designed to fit as snugly as possible to eliminate this, as that gap can allow a bullet's impact to shove the loose armor plating into the wearer's body at the same velocity as the bullet that hit the armor plate.  loose armor in mass effect would turn that now-dangerous impact into an almost fatality-guaranteed impact, as the round fired by a mass-accelerated system has that much more velocity.

just a thought.  :)

I'm a guy and femSheps portrayal is definitely on the conservative end of the gratuitousness spectrum for vid games.

Just wondering why females need a seperate suit of armor for the sole purpose of showing their curves in ME? Combat armor should be unisex.

Because if there wasn't people would complain that the girls look to much like guys in armor, it's really a lose/lose. But I think the separate sets of armor are appropriate, a woman has different features than a man it makes sense that a woman's armor would be different.

The second one is considered armor? I don't even...
But in regards to ME's armor, there's nothing oversexualized about it. I don't see how it could be perceived that way.

lol Ivy from SCIV... I agree that over the series Namco has coincided a reduction in her already skimpy outfit with a ridiculous increase in breast size. It's a bit sad.

@ The SoulCalibur pic

I don't mind characters that have "sexy" as a part of their design motif, like, say, Morrigan from Dragon Age, but it does kind of get under my skin when every single character, male or female, is so ridiculously oversexed that they aren't even trying to hide it. It's slightly more annoying when the females are oversexed and the males aren't so much.

Newsflash. Sex sells. Simple as that.

EDIT: Besides, it's really not as if Mass Effect 2 or even Mass Effect 1 are especially guilty of oversexing anything (although the asari are pushing it... while at the same time not being as bad as the cheesy hentai bunny-women of Final Fantasy XII). Even in ME1 where everything looks like a jumpsuit, the actual body forms are quite realistic--reasonably medium-sized breasts and curves that aren't exaggerated. Comparing that to your average comic book superheroine, it's practically G-rated.
