I downloaded Kotor from Direct2Drive, and it crashes right after it launches. It gives me to same old "program is not responding" crap. Both my computers meet the minimum requirements. One of them is a desktop running windows 7, the other is an laptop running windows vista. I updated all the video card drivers, tried replacing the dll, tried running it in compatability mode, and tried running it as administrator, nothing works. If you have any idea of what is causing the problem, please tell me. Thanks

I recall something about vertical synch needing to be turned off with nvidia drivers. Try updating to the latest version of directx 9.

Startup crash problem fix which worked for me (similar issue, ctd before the main menu):

Rename or delete the three intro videofiles. The location depend on your game version (retail, d2d, steam), but for example steam version location is:

<your steam install dir>\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\swkotor\\movies

Files to rename/delete:
biologo.bik
leclogo.bik
legal.bik

Something to do with an incompatibility issue of the used bik-video player and Windows 7, afaik.

EDIT: I also experience a black screen when ever the game switches from game mode to video playback (and vice versa), but alt+tab to desktop and back to the game brings the picture back.

I recently bought this game. I patched it up and ran the game. It starts and all I see is a black screen with the special cursor. Nothing else shows up. I think I'm having the same problem as you guys and I tried what vellari suggested and it didn't work. Can anyone help?

Both KotOR and NWN1 are OpenGL, more than Direct3D, and newer drivers are not nearly as good about carrying that older 3D graphics support forward.  This is most particularly true for AMD Radeons newer than the X1n00 generation, and the newest "Fermi" generation of Geforces.  It often requires a good deal of driver swapping, even if you do not have a very recent video card, before you can run the two Aurora games (I suppose I should say "three", since KotOR-II used the same engine).

F.Y.I., rather than struggle and be frustrated when I wanted to play some in this game and in NWN1, I had some old parts, including a spare case.  My genius neice wanted a good computer some years back for college, and then brought it to me for upgrades between graduation and going on into grad school.  I'd held oto the guts from the original build, and last winter, I pulled all of it out of the drawer in my shop I'd stuck it into.

With a fresh install of Windows 2000, and almost nothing else, I have installed both KotOR and NWN on the system, and everything works just fine!

I recently bought the game from D2D. It seems to have a standard administrator, compatibility thing going. The game works fine but there is one problem, it opens in a small window in the middle of the screen. I have tried alot things to get this problem fixed but without success. Any help here would be great thanks.
