@Sable: I have to agree that that was one of my major criticisms with ME's dialog system. Knowing the tone beforehand that Hawke takes will stop a lot of those problems from happening. An event like Jacob, for instance, may not happen at all in DA2 because the devs pretty much said they made an effort to make the romance triggers more obvious - probably by designating them with some sort of icon or other label.

Actually, speaking from a writing perspective the one thing I like most about the icons is that they don't require us to impart both intent and tone in a single paraphrase. This means that the tone doesn't have to be blatantly obvious... which when it comes to romantic lines can be a little awkward.

So we can have a paraphrase like "Stay here and talk" and attach the romance icon to it-- letting you know that selecting that line means your intentions are romantic and that they will continue the path down that line, as opposed to us writing something more blatant like "Stay here and let's do it. On the floor."

Not that this wouldn't work for some people, I guess, but you know... ;)

But the lulz! Tell me you didn't laugh when you read "Oh crap, a pop-up". Oh, well. Now we have snarky personalities, so...

Damn, I'm just loving this personality tracker thing. Hopefully it all works out.

Thanks David. This is a godsend. No more accidental romances! :D

Man, that pissed me off in ME2!

I had worse trouble with accidental romance in ME1.  I was one slap short of being a horrible b**** to Kaidan, and he was still convinced he was God's gift to Shepard.  I Virmired him for being so socially incompetent, then felt marginally bad for him.  But only marginally

Good to know we'll have ways of avoiding weird tone and "ARGH!  Not what I wanted to say!" in DA2.

ME2 was a better about the romance triggers, yea. There was still some problems with accidental flirting (see Jacob), but the triggers themselves were pretty obvious - Thane, Tali and Garrus had extremely obvious romance lines, for example.

And players had still had an easy way out - they can break up with the romance interests. That was not available in ME1, which had romance traps.

Fixed for you. Tali flirts with you even before you make the moves on her, at least with Thane, Garrus and Miri you have to say your intrested in them :P

I chuckled but was disappointed when Shepard's reaction wasn't even close to what I hoped it would've been.

You don't understand Kraidy. With Tali, Thane, and Garrus, the romance triggers are very obvious - meaning it's obvious which lines cause Shepard to flirt or start the romance.
If you don't think
"I'm interested."
"It's too dangerous."
"I'm not interested."
isn't obvious, then... ;)

I don't think any line could have beaten that one. Still, they could've gone with something snarkier.

Possibly done since these LIs (along with Samara, arguably, though hers always fails) are aliens.  Very alien ones indeed.  I love Garrus, but I can't say that carapaces do it for me IRL.  Their romances are also easier to break in the final cutscenes, requiring only one firm word from Shep before the LI buggers off.  Jacob requires you to turn him down in no uncertain terms three times, and Jack twice if I recall.

I seem to remember Miranda and Jacob having less obvious triggers, and more ninja flirts in which the prompt would read "So tell me about yourself" and Shep would say something that should get him/her packed off to workplace sensitivity training.

Kraidy...that's not what Sable's saying. Sable is saying that the lines that make Shepard flirt with them are less obvious than with garrus, tali, and thane.

Bull crap. If you pick admire her body, you flirt, if you don't think your going to flirt then your dumb. The only characters where it's not obvisus(sp) is Ash, Kai and Jack. All the others, it is and only a fool would think otherwise!!!!!

Thanks, Collider ^_^

Kraidy,  try to have one conversation with Jacob and FemShep in which FemShep selects the "just want to talk" dialogue trees and doesn't say something at least somewhat flirty, and possibly EXCESSIVELY CREEEEEEEPY.

There are guides in the ME forums for talking to Jacob WITHOUT having Shep say something flirty.  I myself reloaded that first "getting to know you" convo with Jacob three freaking times so Shep wouldn't sound like a stalker.  This should not be necessary :pinched:

Also, FYI, implying people are fools is not the way to get them to listen to your points.

I agree. I often jokingly call femshep "estrus Shep" when she is talking to Jacob. It's easy to get ninjamanced. And I had to reload on my dudeshep playthrough as well because I picked what I thought was a just friendly option with Miranda but Shep said something like "so I can't compliment your body..yada, yada" and I thought "oops, not what I meant at all."

Well, I can admire a woman's body and still not have any romantic interests. I'm comfortable enough with my sexuality that I can also admire a man's body as well, I can see why women would find certain actors attractive over others. Hell, I even had a man-crush on Tennant.

Still, if you don't think it's flirty then I give up on the alien lovers, those lovers!
