So we have, at two ends, the Mako and the Hammerhead. People would generally agree that their attributes are:
Mako:
-Land based
-Durable
-High firepower
-Can be difficult to control
Hammerhead
-Hovers
-Very mobile
-Very fragile
-Low firepower (or, the enemies are just damn tough)
I was thinking - you use a shuttle most of the time in ME2 but it's not a vehicle you actually control. I think a heavy dropship would be super nice. The closest real world analogies I can think of would be an Mil-Mi 24 Hind or Ka 29, which are helicopter gunships/troop carriers.
For those who aren't into military aviation, imagine a flying Mako with more room on board. Since it would be VTOL and can hover at a level altitude indefinitely, it would be super mobile. It would capable of carrying the whole team, so when you hit the ground you can decide who you want to bring along without having to go back to the Normandy. Armaments would include missiles, cannons, and a minigun.
What would your ideal vehicle be?

The closest ME equivalent to your idea would probably be: http://masseffect.wi..._Mantis_Gunship
I'd really like a mission where you hijack one of these babies and attack a merc base with it, preferably with some aerial combat as well.
For me the Hammerhead would be perfect if it had heavier armor, was a bit slowed down, switched the rockets for the cannon/machinegun combo of the Mako and flew a bit higher so it didn't hit every little bump in the road.

Just give the Mako some jump jets, tighten the controls, and shorten the shield recharge time from 20 minutes to 30 seconds and all's good

The Mako. Just give it a booster and tighten the suspension a little and it would be fine.

I love the mako because you could keep moving while turning the turret to engage rather than just jinx left and right in the hammer head.
Technically I would love to be able to fly a shuttle variant like have minor armaments.

Combination of both the Mako and HH.(all the strengths and none of the weaknesses)
It would also look intimidating, rugged and sexy at the same time.

I want the Mako cannon on the Hammerhead and some decent armor/shields on it.

I must admit, there's not much I'd change with the way the Hammerhead handles and aims. What I'd like is to replace the rockets with the Mako's cannon and coaxial machine gun. Slap a scope on it, and give it Mako level shields and health.
Seriously, best of both worlds. Resilient, mobile, and efficient.

You'd still have the issue of the Hammerhead's engines freezing at low temperatures.
