Hello, I've recently stumbled across the Darkspawn Chronicles and decided to purchase it along with some Bioware points. Either way, I thought the product had been installed after I've purchased it and logged onto DA:O , but to my surprise it hadn't. So I restart the game and wait a few minutes, no luck. Then I restart steam, and well- you gussed it. Nothing.

So I manually download the dazip and finally got the content installed. So I boot up the game up, only to realise that the content is unauthorized, offline or online (if I did go sign in- all my previous DLC would become unauthorized) Now, quite frankly- I was getting upset.

So I went to the FAQ on this page, and I tried the option of running services -> DA:Content Updater and starting it automaticlly, and lo and behold to my surprise- the service immediately starts and then stops for no appearant reason. And a message pops up saying something in the lines of;

"Dragon Age - Content Update on local computer started and stopped
again. Certain services will automaticilly stop if they aren't being
used by other services or programs."

Roughly translated from swedish to english. But I hope it gives you an indication on what the issue is. Someone asked me if I was an adminstrator on the PC , and yes- I am. But the help ended there. And I have absolutely no idea how to proceed from here.

Any help will be appriciaited. Thanks.

This service is normally started and stopped automatically by the main DA:O application.

You may find useful information about this service here.

To install the service, run cmd.exe as administrator, change to the bin_ship directory under the Dragon Age install directory (for Steam this will be ...\\\\Steam\\\\steamapps\\\\common\\\\dragon age origins\\\\bin_ship) and run this command:

How do I change the bin_ship directory from cmd.exe ? I can't change the directory when cmd.exe pops up, it's instantly locked on;

C:\\\\Users\\\\MyProfile>

I tried to run the following in cmd.exe, since this mentions my listed problems

sc sdset daupdatersvc D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRCRPWPDT;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)

But all I got was a msg saying "Access Denied". So ... yeah.

Take care. If you see Dragon Age: Origins - Content Updater in Windows Services window, this means that the service is already installed, and you do not have to reinstall it. Read carefully the explanations in the link I posted.

Well, it hasn't helped me. I've had Dragon Age: Content Updater forever, but like I said in my OP. The service can't start because of some awkward reason, and I'm running as the adminstrator on this PC. I tried running the 2nd cmd.exe suggestion, but the access denied totally screwed that attempt.

And still, all my content is unauthorized, or no longer installed.

This may be related to a Windows permission issue for the main Dragon Age folder (which contains bin_ship subfolder where the service executable, DAUpdaterSvc.Service.exe, is located).
The following article explains you how to change permissions (in the second part, Changing Permission) for a folder. It concerns Windows 7 but it should be valid for Vista.

Thing is tho, I can't change access when it comes to file. It's all greyed out for my on all the profiles. Besides, the boxes are all greyed out- but ALL the profiles I've got on the PC should have complete access. At least when it comes to DAUpdaterSVc.Service.exe.

This is very, very annoying, frustrating and getting on my nerves. Espicially when you pay for something and you can't even play the god damn thing. Totally waste of time and money.

You should change the access permission for the Dragon Age main folder, or at least for the bin_ship folder, not for an individual file. If you cannot change this permission for the Users group, try to change it for the Administrators group, as you said that your account has administrator rights.

Changed bin_ship ownership to my account. I've made all PC profiles have full acces to dragon age:origins, BUT IT STILL DOESNT WORK.

I tried this LockHunter program on the DAOupdatersvc.service and when I right click the file, it gives me the option to see what is locking the file- so I try and check that up, and lo and behold it tells me this;

"No any processes locking this file or folder have been found".

Then again, run the damn file again as adminstrator and I get this message (again, roughly translated from swedish to english)

" A windows program must first be installed (with installutil.exe) then booted with the explorer on the server(?), adminstratortools for Windows-Services or the Command; NET START."

There's a little more to it in the beginning, but I simplified it the best I could.

Sorry but I do not know what is preventing you from starting this service.

Concerning your last post, this is normal. DAUpdaterSvc.Service.exe cannot be runned directly. It is the executable used by Dragon Age Updater service. As it is already installed on your computer so you do not have to.

It's installed, but the service starts and automaticilly stops when I try to run it through services.msc and I've told you before that the message I get is

"The Service Dragon Age: Origins - Content Updater on your local computer started and stopped again. Certain services will stop automaticilly if they are not used by other services or programs."

I just don't even understand what that even remotely means, and through the past few days now I've been trying to get that service to work (located through bin_ship). Is it possible to reinstall that Content Updater? // DAUpdater and see if they start working?

What's more troubling is when I browse through the profiles on what to have access, there's quite a few. And when I try to adminstrating the PC profiles, there's only 2 available. 1 which happends to be my profile I'm using now, which is Philip // User-Adminstrator and then the Guest-PC profile.

Back to my point, when there are several choices to choose from. That being SYSTEM- Philip/PC-User, Philip/Adminstrator etc, there's alot of different ones that I can't even actually seem to find.

And also, do mods in DA:O interfere with DLC?

Normally, this service is started and stopped on-demand by the main DA:O application so you do not have to deal with it. This is the case on my computer but apparently not on yours and I really do not know why.

Could still do with some assistance on this matter... if there is any.

Is there a possible way of refund? Considering that I can't even play for what I've payed for.

Have you tried it on another Windows profile to see if its because your using Admin profile? I know I have run into this problem with certain things not running in admin but will on other profile.

It definately didn't seem to help. I tried running another profile, and all my saved games, DLC and whatnot had then vanished, and there was no DLC to purchase.

I tried aswell to run the Dragon Age: Content Updater froms services.msc and it gave me exact same message when I try to start the program.

Last resort measure: have you tried to temporarily disable UAC?

Right, I gave it a try. And onfortunately, no luck aswell.

Would a reinstall do the trick maybe? I have a feeling it wouldn't.

I've re-read your posts on this thread and I want to clarify something. When you said that the service start and stop immediately, did this occur when you right-clicked on the service name and selected Start in the contextual menu or did it occur when you tried to set the service to Automatic startup mode in its properties panel? You should not perform the latter operation; this service should be set on Manual startup mode and will be started/stopped on demand by DA:O main application. When I asked you if you can start manually the service, I talked of the former operation.

The service was set on automatic the all time, but it was ALWAYS on status: stopped, it would never start. Never, no matter how I choose to approach it.

I set the service onto manual, but alas little improvement was made. I set it on manual(tried both with trying to start the service manually by pressing start obv when on setup; manual and not touching it and booting the game just on status; manual. Booted DA:O and was signed off and all content was unauthorized, went to sign in to see if it helped. And no, still unauthorized

It seems as if the issue is the service itself, is it repairable in any way?

When you set the service to Manual startup does it remains started after you select Start in the right-click menu for this service?

Actually, I get the message like I get before:

"Dragon Age - Content Update on local computer started and stopped again. Certain services will automaticilly stop if they aren't being used by other services or programs."

It's a rough translation from swedish to english.

I've just found this thread describing a solution to an issue very similar to yours. This concerns the Steam version of DA:O but it can be easily adapt to retail version. Hope this could help you.
