Welcome to Neverwinter Night  (NWN) :D

First and foremost, let me introduce you to essentially what Neverwinter Nights is, Neverwinter Nights is a Fantasy Role Playing game, which uses the core d20 / Dungeons & Dragon system to give the player a fantasy world to explore, with the main setting being in the world of Forgotten Realms.  With many different types characters to create,  the player(s) play in a world where they explore to ecounter many different things, whether it be monsters, other characters (other than players or even other players), tricks, traps, puzzles, and even other types games within the game itself, for in Neverwinter Nights, almost anything is possible!  What makes Neverwinter Nights so popular for many, is the broaden aspect of the game, it's feature rich content, and community driven custom content.

Neverwinternight is a fantastic game with a huge amount feature rich custom content, a very broad amount of customizations & add-ons are available, this game is packed full of user created content (like modules & custom systems), and it even has 3rd party programs which extend the use of the core game.  Even more than all of that, it has the Award Winning Aurora Neverwinter Toolset, which allows the players or builders in the nwn community to make custom work or modules to share with the community, all of which extends and enchances the game expotentially.

One of the major aspects of NWN that makes it such an idepth and feature rich game is, it's a very heavially community driven game, which means many members in the community produce content for the game, which after many years after the games initial release is so in depth, that it would take a person literally years to play all of the modules or test all the content available for download.  (Many Modules can be found at the website -  nwvault.ign.com  )

Because NWN is based upon the d20 System created by TSR for Dungeons & Dragons, and that it's main setting is in the most loved Fanstasy World of D&D called Faerun / commong known as "The Forgotten Realms" , it's truly been kept alive by the many RPG fans of Dungeons & Dragons.  If you are completely new to RPG or Dungeons and Dragons for that matter, you will find that NWN will place you deep into the heart of what RPG is, and essentially teach you the core game of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) as well, even in ways that the old Pen & Paper D&D game was unable to.

As many of the current and former players have discussed before, Neverwinter Nights will never die, simply because it's fans refuse to leave the game, for they love it with a passion above all other games out there.  Many new games may compare to NWN in some manner or another, though, because it's a new game, it will lack the massive amount of community made content that can be found here in the NWN community.  This is of course what essentially makes the NWN game so great and continues to keep it much alive and thoroughly loved by many.

In these very forums / boards, you will find that there are still many players willing to help you with any of your questions, they can help you with scripting, building, making characters, or creatures / monsters, because no matter what your need may be pertaining to NWN, you can always get help from friendly community members who are more than glad to help, and that is one reason why NWN is still a great game, because it's fan base is also very much alive & active in contributing to the game.

If you have had the chance to play the main game adventures / campaigns, the games that came with the software, and your wanting to play online, this is very easy to do as well, and to many new players surprise, they will find a very large selection of online modules ready to be played.  As many members have suggested before, get your feet wet, try quite a few of them out, and give your self ample time to explore, for some of these worlds / modules are very indepth, and there is much to learn about the game.

You will learn a lot while playing online, some from players, some from just playing the game, and some from the Dungeon Masters (DMs) which are running the game, as many people are more than willing to help new players out.  The online game is much different than the offline game, the game play can be very much more intensive, action wise, or it can be heavially focused on Role Playing as well, as each type of game that is available for play will be found under a section in the gamespy server list, there is Action, PW (Persistent World) , Story, and Role Playing to name a few, so when you go online to play, simply choose which genre of game you like to play, and go explore..

The online experience is even further improved by the players which play on the module with you, for many of them are more than willing to help you by "Showing you the ropes", for, you will find many players are wittingly fun, greater companions than any hechmen offline could ever be, and very enjoyable to play with.  Hopefully you will fully enjoy yourself online, or offline, as the community has gone out of their way to ensure that everyone has something that is enjoyable to use, no matter what your taste may be.  While there is a lot to learn, your going to get a crash course here on some of the basics, so that you can better be prepared for what you "Need To Know" about NWN.

Initially, when you installed your game, a folder was created on your hard drive, usually the C: drive, unless you have a special setup, you will find the "neverwinternights" folder there, and if you open that folder, you will find the "nwn" folder, which holds all the other folders & game files, which will be important to you later on.  In the "modules" folder, you will be placing any modules you download, to play.

Placing custom content in your game is rather easy, often content you download will have instructions on how to add the content to your game, or it may even have a simple executable file which does it automatically, which all you would need to do is double click on the file.  As a general rule of thumb, you will need to put Hak files, in your "hak" folder, tlk files in your "tlk" folder (if the "tlk" folder is not there simply right click in a white space in your nwn folder, and select new (from the right click context menu), then select create new folder, and rename the folder (using the same right click context menu) and give it the name "tlk" without the "".  Move all the tlk files into the tlk folder and your done!

Sometimes you will download a custom 2da file, which goes in your "override" folder, these are used to further enhance the game, while there are a lot of different files which you may use, again, documentation generally helps you properly put the content in your nwn folder or subfolders, if not, you can always ask for help on these forums.

There are some downloads you should download right away to be able to access most of the server modules online, because if you dont' have the proper updated content, you may not be able to see or even play on these servers.

The Game's Core Final Update - The 1.69 Update - Get It Here

The Community Expansion Pack (CEP) -  Get The CEP Here - This is commonly used by many builders.

(Make sure you install CEP 2.2 FIRST, then CEP 2.3, for 2.3 is missing some 2.2 content for some reason)

Finally, on an ending note, learn to use these forums when you have questions, for many are here to help, and this is one of the major benefits of the nwn game, and that is, that we all love to help and have a good time, for many of us love this game above all others, for nwn is not just a hobby to all of us, but also our passion too for many of us..

Thanks for reading & Welcome to Neverwinter Nights. :wizard:

Sure Flamesz, you have to consider, NWN is a much older game, therefore, you could get away with playing on a decent 256 MB / 200 MHz GPU Video Card with ease.. (it can be played even on a 128 MB Graphics Chip - which are integrated into the motherboard)

It's best played from Windows XP, and make sure you check to ensure your gameplay / video is smooth, if not, you may want to update your video card's driver to possibly get better video quality..

I've done this and resolved some video problems I had on an old machine....

Flamesz, I just re-installed my NWN, I used to play a bit but never got TOO far into it (I really liked playing on Persistant World Servers), I got the diamond edition and it would be a real shame for me not to play through the rich native campaign that is NWN.. Maybe you would like to buddy up and play through a good chunk of the campaigns co-op?

I'm playing on a 2.5GHz P4 system, 1gig ram, Geforce 5200 128mb system and I'm running on mostly high settings at 1280x720 with no issues so you should be fine!

I'd suggest making a quick and dirty version for those of us with smaller attention spans.

This is a great idea, Genisys. I've been musing about the NWN community coming together to educate people about the hidden gem in online gaming that we have here for us to strengthen the future of our beloved hobby. I think you essay needs a little work but it is a great start - do you mind if I repost it elsewhere with a credit to you?

Really nice intro there! I'm an' old mmorpg roleplayer who's basiacly sick of all the mmo's I have, and the lack of quality Rp there is on their servers. And now finally I remember Nwn, which I used to play alot back in the days when I did not have an' internet connection.

So I began reading up a bit on the multiplayer Rp, and was stunned. Dm's and everything ( I'm also a fan of pen and paper ). So now I'm asking, is there alot of rp campaigns going on etc? If there is, I'm deffinatly re-buying the game + expansions. I have to re-buy everything since my old copies are gone! *mutters* But aye, thanks!

Now with GoG (and perhaps other sites) making NWN more readily available, we may see a surge in popularity of a truly solid gaming experience.

There is plenty of new and unique content posted to satisfy any gaming style and preference in existence.

If it has really been that long since you have experienced NWN, you are going to be thrilled.  The community has not been napping while your own adventures have taken you elsewhere.  Besides the almost-endless (and sometimes overwhelming) volume of community-made modules, there have been customizations like the CEP and PRC that essentially provide a brand new game.  And just about the time you are getting used to searching on the NWNVault you will probably embark on the world of PWs where the real power and addictiveness of NWN gaming is revealed.

There is a whole world of adventure and innovation that hasn't even been tasted yet! :o

I'm new to the NWN world and I am in need of help of how to give my character a good start. She is a Druid Elf and she wants her trade to be in the arts (specifically painting and vocalism). She just became a citizen of Myon and is supposed to help her kindred learn how to protect themselves in the woods. The issue is that I know nothing about ANYTHING that has to do with those things. :pinched:

If anyone can help please seek me out in the game or message me somehow, it'd be greatly appreciated.

By the way, Genisys, great intro to the game. But I think for noobs (like myself) there should be more focus on how their specific character can become more powerful in the game so they can defend themselves when the time comes. I've died in the forests during my journeys from Myon to Benwick and back many times. <_<

Thanks so much you guys!  :wizard:

The link in my sig will led you to a place where the fine art of character building can be learnt and improved on.

Some more charcater buidling related resources:

Pre-epic Character Builds Guild downloadable archive on the Vault courtesy of The_Krit.

Neverwinter Grimoire: This document is a compilation of the Neverwinter Nights, SoU, & HotU rules. It covers most of the rules on character creation and has descriptions of every feat, skill, and spell that is included in the game. It is meant for the beginner and advanced player as a guide and reference. This is the second version of this document. Many things have been added and corrected along with Shifter info. This document uses hyper-linked bookmarks throughout. It is formatted to print front/back. The use of color in the document is meant for ease of reading and will not take up too much color ink.

Epic Character Table: This table shows when each class and Prc recives bounus feats as well as special abilities. It also shows the pre-requesits if the pointer hovers over a class.

Kamiryn's Character Build Calculator: The CharacterBuildCalculator is an Excel Sheet that allows you to create builds very fast and easily. You just select your race, your class (or classes) and the order of leveling. Then the CBC calculates at which level you gain a feat (regular/bonus) and what class feats you get. Also the CBC calculates your hitpoints, your BAB, your attacks/round, your saving throws, skill points, spell casting, bard song and many more things. Finally the CBC generates a text output of your build ready to post everywhere you like. The CBC covers races (feats, skill points, ability modifiers), hitpoints (constitution bonus, toughness, epic toughness), BAB, attacks/round, feats (regular, bonus, class, feat prequisites), saving throws (CON/DEX/WIS modifiers, feats), skill point selection (forbidden skills, cross-class skills, class skills) bonus skill points (human, INT modifier).
