I was wondering if it would be a godo strategy to go get shale before i am too far in in the game and user her as a tank?
i have Leliana, morrigan and zevran wynne dog and sten so far, but i get smashed to bits when i have a wave after wave encounter with demons...
I need a damage absorber while my specialist do the damage...
what do you think?

i tend to not have her change combat forms much, just stick to the main one which has an ability that is a powerful punch attack that can knockback any opponent. then there is a ground smash which she punches the ground 3 times causing damage to enemies surrounding her and stunning them with each hit which can be very useful in the final mission. these two abilities you had as a golem in the fade in the tower of mages quest
the other one i use is stone mastery, i use it for the ability to throw large hunking rocks at enemy formations and throw rocks into the air to have them crash down on enemies and damage all in the target area like tempest, blizzard, earthquake, and inferno. again this is useful on the final mission.
shale also has some very hilarious banter and comments.

I'm assuming you have Alistair in your team despite not mentioning him above - he works quite well for that event if it's the one I think you mean.
Otherwise the answer is yes, Shale is an excellent tank - as long as you have her in Stoneheart mode (+12 armor when maxed out).
The other thing to remember is that Shale's tanking ability differs slightly from conventional tanks - she has very high constitution (and needs more to equip the best large crystals) so she is MEANT to take hits, whereas other tanks can use armor and defense to avoid/absorb damage. Don't be surprised if you're in the middle of a fight and her health is at 50% - she'll survive. Also in some ways she is a better tank than Alistair as she generates a lot more threat than he does, with Threaten and Stoneheart activated.
These two abilities are Slam and Quake, which are part of the Pulverizing Blows tree and NOT recommended for use as a tank. This tree, maxed out, applies -10 defense to Shale.thepiebaker wrote...

Hope this helps. Shale IS very witty and fun to take along.

You have 3 rogues and 1 mage in the party; I'd replace Zevran since you are already a Rogue. Take Dog as another melee type to draw aggro.
Overall, Shale is good as a tank initially but her lack of Tactics slots will be limiting in the end. Her 3 tiers of Golem skills are exclusive to each other; in other words, you can only use 1 tier of skills at a time without having to change modes. Very awkward for an NPC or else you'd have to take direct control of her during combat.

I really dont know why i left him there, his abilities to me seem not good enough...now i have 3 rogues...which is probably even worse...
i am trying to romance Leliana, kepp morrigan because of her ranged spells and zevran just got in into the story, and i like the antonio banderas accent lol...
i should go trade zevran and leliana for shale and alistair.
I also have sten but he is a major ding dong..seems like i bully to me...i should have left him to rot in his cage....

Alistair is good for drawing attention away from everyone else if you build him right - that's the purpose of a tank. Initially, he doesn't do as much damage but he can take it and that's what matters the most for a tank. Later on, he is quite the darkspawn killer especially if you max out his Templar abilities.

so Alistair should tag along according to most people moreso than anyone else.....
Nah, a tank is only required if your party members are having trouble surviving. Personally i think tanks are overrated. I stopped using sword/shield characters after i started getting the hang of the game.
my recent playthrough is an arcane warrior/blood mage + a dex rogue + mage with CC abilities + decked out 2h warrior with greater healing pots. Absolutely no heals necessary. The arcane warrior is so decked out in defense and armor buffs it hardly takes any damage, so is the rogue with super high dex. Mage with CC abilities hardly dies if he/she has gryph of repulsion, the aura spell that blocks range attacks and mana clash for mages. The only one that needs HP pots is the warrior, but with decked out gear even he hardly uses any.
so you see? tanks are overrated. they are only there to make your life easier, that's all
sry for the mispelled spells btw XD

You do know Warriors can be archers, and duel wield like rogues too and usualy do better damage right? Why dont you have Alistair, Sten, or Ohgren filling as you tank....you dont like them?
Also Shale is a ok tank but a warrior tank blows her out of the water except vrs Dragons and even then thats only because theres a bug where shale cant be grabbed.

Unfotunately as the game progresses, her advantages diminish. If you build a warrior to be a dex-tank with good equipment at later levels there is no contest. Any warrior dex-tank will have survivability far, far beyond what Shale could hope for. She has good armor and a crapload of hp, but that only means that she needs a lot of healing.
If you don't like dex-tanks and prefer strength tanks, then I think Shale can remain competetive till the end of the game. Her flexibility is very nice indeed. She can switch her roles in a matter of seconds. You have to switch stances for that, but sometimes it's worth it for her uber Rock Barrage lasting aoe (trivialized many Deep Roads encounters, including Broodmother) or that quake, which will damage and stun everyone around her. Her self-explode with aoe stun and regeneration boost is very nice as well.
So my evaluation is: awesome at the beginning, still pulls her weigth later on. I tend to relegate the tanking duties to Alistair after level 12-15 however.

does her rock barrage work now?
Yes, the damage from rock Barrage is not going to kill the targets (Hurl Rock does that) it's just to stop them from doing spells.

Some believe that Dex builds are the best tanks but personally I will pick Shale over any Dex build anytime.
Reason being:
The primary function of a tank is not to dance and dodge attacks, they need to draw attacks and constantly. Horrifying appearance contributes to threat - Shale. Shale does not even need to press threaten for most to target it.
Shale has armor than can be changed at will to maximize its defenses in all situation - poor Gaxkang against my Large Brilliant Spirit Crystal
If Shale uses Threaten and then drop into Stone Aura, the mobs nearly always cant be bothered with others and will target Shale exclusively.
You do not really need to heal Shale a lot, you can simply drop a force shield on Shale when Shale's health drops to 30%, at most I need only another lifeward (for Nightmare mode). Now, before you think that you can do this to a dex tank as well
The dwarfs held off the first archdemons with golems
The only downside is... Shale will disengage from battle if she sees a pigeon. Luckily that has yet to happen

I thought that was intended. It makes sense that a golem isn't so easy to crush between your jaws even if you're a dragon.

Shale was added later in development, Shale and Dog cant be 'Grabbed' since theres no animation for it. Its a intended bug of sorts I guess.
