Constructive criticism only, please. Let's keep it civil.

Newer screenshots here

Well, I couldn't help but notice some of the new armor designs in the recently released in-game screenshots, which I assume we'll be getting more of in the days to come. As I'm sure you're aware, the designs of some of the mage and rogue armor in Origins were considered mediocre to downright ugly by the fanbase.

I'm concerned that the designs I'm seeing aren't really any more appealing than they were in the first game. I'm especially talking about the leather armor Hawke is wearing with the dragon face on it, and Aveline's outfit. The dragon face armor looks like a blacksmith's apron or something to me...not very attractive as an armor design. I can't really put my finger on what I dislike about Aveline's armor quite yet. I'll have to think about it some more I suppose. Bethany's mage robe looks very similar to the designs from Origins, though an improved version.

I find this a little odd because some of the armor designs we've seen look amazing and are obviously something you guys have lavished time and thought on (Flemeth's, and Hawke's default outfit). Also, from what I can see of the heavy armor, those designs are strong as well, as they were in the first game. Cassandra's armor looks very nice.

I have no idea if this is something that can be tweaked, but I wanted to see if I was alone in thinking this, so what does everyone else think? I'm hoping this thread can be a useful source of feedback for the dev team.

Edit: wanted to add that I really don't like the Darkspawn armor either. It reads as low-poly to my eye and just makes me think of playing games on the lowest graphical settings. I think the overall direction the art has been taken in is a great one, I just wanted to point out what I consider the weak areas.

I'd like to see the ones in the screens be the early armour/robes and the super duper new ones be saved for the first time I play the game, that said I don't like the leather armour Hawke wears which just looks like cailans armour chest piece.

I do agree. I used leather armor for all my rogues and I never really found one I liked. I did love some of the heavy armor in the game. Some was of it was just stunning really.

I'm not saying every armor has to look like endgame armor, but earlier armor sets can still look simpler or even shabby without looking unappealing. I hate to drag out MMOs as an example but I tend to like armor and clothing pieces all over the level spectrum in those games despite the lower tiers looking much less fancy than endgame stuff.

They need to make more models for each any every armor class. Those leather armors were boring. In the end I mostly used mods for light armors. The original ones had nearly no unique feeling if at all other than some medium, heavy and massive armor skins. Bioware has to put more effort into it.

There was never a time in Guild Wars that I ever felt... bland or boring. All the different armor sets and pieces looked pretty darn epic and cool. No matter what level it was.

I really like the Sentinal Armour in Awakenings, pity all my Awakenings characters are human though and it's just Warden Commander armour.

How about some examples of the kind of armours/robes we'd like to see?

I just don't want extremely sexy armor... It should have at least a realistic touch, like Lelianna's at Sacred Ashes.

I agree with the realistic touch approach. Let's keep Plate bikini's and space age armor like in WoW out of Dragon Age.

Making most armors look boring makes it easier for them to keep track of your social standing. You can't really expect your armor to look better than that of a king, no?

That said, I agree some of the most powerful light and medium armors in the original game looked very uninteresting. Bioware should hire a fashion designer or something...

Personally, I'm sick of the gladiator-esque skirt thingie. It didn't even look that good, but still it was on every set of light armor.

What don't you like about it specifically? Sounds like it's just a matter of taste from your post. That armor Hawke is wearing in the pic looks "better" than anything in origins did imo, it actually has layering, and contrasting detail (and isn't a skirt) The point being, what would you rather it be "tweaked" to?

Gothic, in my opinion, sort of did things well. They have a touch of fantasy without looking too unrealistic or outlandish. Also most of these styles fit relatively well with the Hawke that's advertised.

I would like it if female characters could wear light armour without the DA:O dog collar.

I don't see what is so bad about it, apart from the coloring of the chestpiece.

Actually. Could the "apron" feel just be because of the area in the game? You're fleeing from Lothering with nothing but the clothes off your back and your family?

Well, I find that Hawke's standard outfit, while visually nice, looks stupid. And I have a suspicion that it is what he'll wear only when Varric is running with the story.

You can't expect to start out with some badass armor.

Excalibur should be used by many more as an inspiration for heavy armor.

both of those look better than anything from either game, as far as my taste goes. I do miss the hood and cowl from BG2 though, DAO's helms looked more like 1930's football players.
