both of those look better than anything from either game, as far as my taste goes. I do miss the hood and cowl from BG2 though, DAO's helms looked more like 1930's football players.

I love both of these. I'm not asking for metal bikinis or a Final Fantasy clone, I just want nicer looking armor. Lord of the Rings is another example of armor designs done extremely well. I think what might be bothering me about the "apron" armor is the proportions. The dragon face in the middle is a big plane of relatively unbroken space and yes, it is reminiscent of Lloyd in Redcliffe.

Add a bit of fantasy elements to these, and you got something solid, IMO.

Fantasy elements? What are those? Those armors look just fine as they are.

I'm especially talking about the leather armor Hawke is wearing with the dragon face on it, and Aveline's outfit. The dragon face armor looks like a blacksmith's apron or something to me...not very attractive as an armor design.

The animal head pattern is simple reuse of texture from one of massive armours available in DAO, so it's possibly just a placeholder.

Essentially, what makes a pleasing armor design is the same thing that makes any design pleasing: shape, line, color, proportion, texture. The ones I cited in the OP miss the mark in my opinion.

I'm still not sure why video game companies do not employ a costume designer. Designing for video games presents a new set of challenges and different parameters to working with real-world materials, of course, but having an understanding of how real clothes work and an aptitude for designing them can only help. I'm surprised "video game costume designer" isn't a job.

Well... Yes !
But put them as-is in the DA world and they would clash with everything else.
Nothing too wild, though, I mean you could trim the sleeves and add bracers, and maybe a not-too oversized, not pyramid-shaped shoulderpad, or whatever.

Yeah, that was my assumption as well. Aveline's sword&shield models (directly imported from DAO) clash pretty badly with the rest of the screenshot, so I hope they're going to redo all weapons as well.

That's a good point, and you can do a lot with textures. Replacing that texture might do a lot to improve that armor.

@relhart and _Loc_N_lol_ - Those are the types of armors I'd love to see. They fit in the setting and they aren't boring to look at. I would totally love to wear them in game.

I'm a particular fan of the armor artstyles from Oblivion and Morrowind. No chainmail bikinis here (except for the modding community :/) Low tier armor doesn't mean it looks ugly; my favorites are low-tier leather and mid-tier Dwarven/Dwemer:

My main gripe with DA:O armor was that each armor class essentially had one design. If I wore light armor at level 3 and replaced it at level 7 with another light armor set, at most I would see a minor recoloring. No new textures, no new cosmetic changes, just the same set with a fresh coat of paint. The exception to this rule was massive armor but, even then, it was hard to differentiate between the different models (thank god for the Templar armor, the only set that both looked gorgeous and stood out from the rest of the inventory).

Basically I want unique models in DA2, not recolorings. Oh, and more massive armor similar to the Templar armor, I'm a sucker for heavy armor with the chain mail skirt thing. =p

Edit - this applies to weapons as well.

It is from the manga Berserk, but you're close enough. ;p

Berserk it is. Best dark fantasy manga ever created.
I always wished to swing this sword in da:o + wearing this animated armour.
Would be truely epic.

Actually enchanted/animated armours would be a must in DAII but i don't see it happening.

I like what mr. Dave of Canada proposed. Gothic armors are irresistible (and not gothic armors, I said Gothic armors)

^ What Morrigan should have looked like

I kinda liked Hawke's armor in the trailer (not the screens posted by the OP): it would be nice if that 'set' had different variants depending on weight (maybe the light version would have smaller greaves, and the massive version would include armor for both arms and have a helm...something like that)

I can't help but approve of the leather armor in that screenshot; if for no other reason than that the armor comes with pants, which is a big step up from DAO.

Agreed.  Loved the massive armors, really let down by all the rest.

Skirts in armor is nothing uncommon it offers mobility as well as protection and sometimes the armors are just too damn long

I've always been an unarmored fan i'd just like to run around like this and scream "My name is Garrett Hawke, you killed (insert tutorial character that dies here), prepare to die."
