From what I heard there is no story and it's like the Darkspawn Chronicles, but a little better.
Is Golems of Amgarrak worth getting?

There is a Lovecraft-like story, new monster as a Boss, three pieces of new DLC, and one frustrating end battle on NIghtmare settings. I beat it with a Rogue, but getting stopped and stomped by bad luck and more bad luck with my Mage.

there's your answer right there....i liked awakening 1000 times better than the new DLC. If you don't even like awakening then....i give you a big fat "NO!" to your question

I read some reviews, and this game is more about combat than anything. If you think DA's combat system sucks (like me--console version), don't get it. Since I have yet to get a game that's any good, I will probably buy it. Fallout comes in October
, so in the meantime I have nothing to play...

To be honest I think golems of amgarrak is the best dlc after warden's keep.

Awakening was fairly good as an Expansion. Golems of Amgarrak is interesting, and worth five bucks, but it's a little too short. If it was longer, then it would be an auto-recommend, but as it is now, it's up to personal tastes, I suppose. The puzzles are interesting, and the fights hard and challenging, and the rewards pretty well worth it. Otherwise, if you don't want to touch it, don't. If you do, do.

I might consider getting it, but i don't think you get much part from a couple of achievemnts and a few "good" items. When i get DLC i tend to think mostly of replay value.

every now and then when I get enough dlc items I decide to make a new character and it gives me another 30+ hours of gameplay... it's a good extra

I thought it was mediocre at best.

It's a $5 DLC, keep that in mind. But let's just say it's better then going to go see any of the movies that are out now in theater. And it's cheaper... I mean basically you can save the money with going to Taco Bell instead of McDonalds...

I think it's probably the worst DLC they put out yet. Too short, buggy, not much of a story, barely any dialogue...just seemed like they did a rush job on it and put it out to keep on schedule with DLC output and of course to make some money. It's probably the last DLC I will purchase for the game due to this being the third disappointing DLC in a row for me now on this game.

I liked it. A bit short but hey, it's so cheap too. And for the first time in a really long time I had to reduce from NM to Hard for the very final fight because I didn't feel like taking 2 hours for a fight on a DLC that is only 2 hours long. (even less for some I'd say).

I don't get it. Is hating good things the cool people thing to do? I must have missed something. If you didn't like Awakening, which was Origins with more stuff, then why are you even on these forums? If you didn't like Awakening then no, don't buy Golems.

If you're looking for a piece of DLC that's story driven and really heavy on dialogue, don't get it. If you're looking for some more combat however, and a rather simple but entertaining dungeon puzzle, this DLC is for you.
I had a lot of fun with it, but I don't think it has much replay value. After playing it twice, I'll probably never play it again...although, I do feel like it was money well spent.

Playing on PC.
A bit out of subject, but since Awakening was such a pushover, GoG at least gives you a chance to use DAA new skills, since enemies are a bit tougher. This was the selling point in my case.
Unfortunately, my initial impression was just confirmed, new DAA skills are cheesy and unbalanced. Got the Grim Reaper Achievement easily with the overpowered AW/BM (dancing around with elemental chaos turned on) and the ludicrously overpowered archer talents (Accuracy), while it was a painful 2h of grinding (at normal) with a 2H warrior (I hope that all DAA skills are ditch from DA2).
So this DLC has some interest if you want target practice for the cheesy overpowered DAA Warden, otherwise expect a frustrating run of hack and slash with limited lore and NPC interaction.

Had they created it as sidequest of the Origins campaign with a slightly lower endboss difficulty it would have been perfect. Finding Branka, Shale's personal quest, Golems of Amgarrak all at the same time while you are in the Deep Roads it would have been perfect.
As it is now as stand-alone adventure I found it on the first playthrough seriously lacking in various areas and the 2nd playthrough (and gaining my last 2 achievements) my opinion has not changed.
I really hope that BioWare ceases with the production of stand-alone DLC's who could just as easily been added to either Origins or Awakening.
In the example of Golems...
While playing Origins let any of the Dace clan through a cut scene meet up with the Warden while (s)he is in Orzammar and ask to meet the warden in one of the houses in the noble quarters for a proposition to be made our worth while.
While playing Awakening let Dace send a messenger to collect you for the short quest towards this lost thaig.

It has a very loose tie in to DA2. I found the story interesting but brief, and the six golem brawl was kind of frustrating, but it was fun. It's only 5 bucks, whats the harm?

I was really excited about DLC for a game i really enjoy. Golems burst my bubble quickly. Completed the game in under 2Hrs and felt that i had been royally shafted. Dull and boring. I spent 100+ Hrs on Oblivion and all the DLC for that and never felt cheated move over to what could be nearly the most epic 1 player rpg and lube me up im ready. What makes it worse is they are pushing more of this cack out with a Morrigan quest now. Oh dear god why did i get hooked?

Sounds like you won't like it, you didn't like Awakening so avoid this.
