I've recently had to wipe my Windows drive, though the Baldur's Gates were installed on another partition and I didn't lose the games. Though, of course, now the games ask me to reinstall them when I try to run them... both my games are heavily modded (I hardly even remember how many & which mods I installed in the past), so can I safely reinstall the games without overwriting everything and losing all my mods?

I think so, I've un-installed in the past and forgotten to delete the directory which still had all my mods in. So when it came round to re-installing it and playing it again, all my previous mods were there still. But then again, I didn't stick around for long enough to see if anything had changed.

You could just copy your override file, I think that works? Takes a while to move it though. Or just do what I do and copy your essentials (game saves, characters, screenshots, portraits, sounds) and your WeiDU log and just start again.

I wouldn't bother with reinstalling in that situation. Just call bgmain.exe (rather than baldur.exe) to start the game and you can play it just as before.

If you want to change anything about the configuration, use bgconfig.exe.

Only baldur.exe checks the registry to find out if the game has been installed. Everything that's needed by the game itself is in the installation directory, so unless you delete anything there, it will still run without problems.

I haven't installed my game in years and even copied it to a different computer when upgrading my hardware. It takes a lot less time and I have never had issues with that.
