Etain sounds 10x better than Marian... Posted Image

Anyone want to start a petition to Bioware to change the name?

When I read that it was Marian, I pictured to myself Mike at the computer...

Mike Laidlaw: "Oh! Hey guys, they're asking what the default name is for the female Hawke! Any ideas?"

Random Dev: "Uhh... I just got done watching Robin Hood: Men In Tights.... How about Marian?"

Mike Laidlaw: "That works!" *types it in and hits submit*

:P

*Starts laughing too hard*

Reading Mr. Laidlaw's posts, I can totally see this. :)

Depends what is being meant by "default."

I actually like the name "Marian" too, even though I intend to pick my own name.

I'm not sure what's meant by "default LI," either.  Romances in these games are all optional after all.

What is meant by "Default LI" is like... Alistair is the straight male love interest for a woman. Morrigan is the straight female love interest for a man. They are forced into your party. Leliana and Zevran can be bypassed altogether. If you never go to the tavern in Lothering, you never meet Leliana. If you kill Zevran when he tries to ambush you, well... He's dead. So you can miss those two options for love with them.

are we sure that the "pirate lady" shown in the trailer is forced into the party?

*This Etain Hawke does not want Varric. He is too short for this Etain Hawke. She likes hers bigger and taller.*

I can see where you're coming from but I still think the term "default love interest" is inaccurate here.  At the end of the day, a romance with any of them won't happen until you initiate it.

Also, IIRC you can indeed tell Morrigan to get lost, she just shows up again before the endgame.

Yes, and then she pulls a knife on him and leaves.

I agree - on principle. In practice I've had the misfortunate of accidentally romancing some Bioware characters before. I asked for them to make the romance triggers more obvious, and one of the devs said "you may be getting your wish," so I am glad for that.

That's true. But I also see them as the default love interests because their relationships seemed to have more lines of dialogue and more depth than that of Zev or Leli. But that's just me and how I perceived their relationships, others might think differently.

Maybe we get a "heart" or "flirt" or something icon to indicate when you're being romantic...

Maybe default is the wrong wording. Alistair and Morrigan the male and female leads respectively, so maybe "lead romances" would be more apt.

Yes, lead romance is more fitting. Good terminology. ^_^

Probably.  That would fit with what we've been told about DA2's dialogue wheel, at least.

Since we don't get to see what Hawke says exactly before we choose the options, having some kind of icon to designate flirty lines is very much appreciated.

I agree. Let's make a poll and see which name is preferred, though.

Honestly, I would prefer to have Marian Hawke be the default name--I don't hate it, and I think I'd like it in time, same way I ended up liking Elissa. I want to save Etain for the people who have Olga's character in mind. If it's just the "default", than it's harder for me to believe I'm shaping a character around her badassness. I'd probably even end up changing it.

That's true. Although I still can't help thinking of Men In Tights when I read the name Marian.

I did make a poll though, just to see which name people preferred. The link is on the OP, but I'll post it here, too.

No matter how many people asked for the default name to be changed, I doubt Bioware would change it now, anyway. It's already been announced as Marian.

Yeah, "Marian" is no worse than "Garret," is it? Also, it's more accessable for most people than "Etain." I can't even find information on how to pronounce "Etain."

I love the name Etain, always have, but I've already had to rethink a handful of my usual names to avoid an Aerith and Bob situation with the siblings. Unfortunate, but meh.

I looked it up and there's at least five different ways to pronounce it. Eh-TAIN, Eh-TOYN, Ay-deen, EE-tain, EE-tine... So just pronounce it however you want. How do they pronounce it in Centurion?

Thanks, but that was just one example of my main point, really.Posted Image

It's a fine name, I just can't think of a good reason for it to be the default name instead of "Marian."  Of course, this is coming from someone who plans to choose her own name, anyway.
