Okay, I need help with something that has been bothering me for a while. I was wondering, why do people sometimes add in exclamation points after specific words like "Male" or "Female" or "F" or "M" - for example "Fem!Hawke" or "M!Shep"?
In my experience, it's basically a different type of shorthand to denote a specific state or mindset of a character. More widely used in fandoms with a large number and variety of fandom circles, like Harry Potter. It can function as a keyword/warning system, too. Say there was this story:
Harry Potter and the Pillars of Storgé
An ancient spell goes awry, and Harry and Draco are magically bonded! Also Draco is the Heir of Ravenclaw and Slytherin! Full summary inside.
Contains Angsty!Harry, Veela!Draco, leather pants.
The "Angsty!Harry" and "Veela!Draco" invoke fandom tropes. People who want to read about Draco as a Veela will know this story contains it, while people who do not want to read a story with Veela!Draco can avoid it. Same with Angsty!Harry, or say, F!Hawke.
In discussion F!Hawke is basically another way of saying LadyHawke.
