What are you talking about? That isn't the case at all. We don't have problems playing as male characters. What we're arguing is that there are so many video games where you can only play as a male that it would be nice to see a female used in advertising for a game where you can play as a female. How many games have male protagonists? The vast majority of them do, and females still play them. Is it really so bad to want to play as a kickass female main character who isn't half naked and mostly there just so guys can ogle at her?

I was just saying how the poster said that some women dismissed ME, ME2, and DA:O because it had a male protagonist being portrayed, which I consider a sad reason. The sex of the hero shouldn't determine gameplay in one's mind, as a female can act just like a male, and vice versa. That's all I mentioned, I am aware of there being more male main characters than females and I agree that women being portrayed as sex symbols is not very good on a constant basis, same with men being portrayed as barbaric ape people.
I am in full support of a Lady Hawke in a marketing trailer, but dismissing DA2 because of a male being marketed is as bad as dismissing it if it had a female being marketed.

The issue is often with the way the lead is portrayed. A lot of women I know who play games just find it impossible to relate to any of them and find their dialogue somewhere between humourously stupid and offensive.

And no it isn't sad. You aren't enlightened so please don't start acting like some self righteous tool.

Anyway, Female hero being marketed sounds great, certainly it was Leliana who got the most attention out of the Sacred Ashes trailer. If people miss out because they don't wish to find information for themselves, oh well. If a "hack n slash" or fantasy rpg intrigues them, they should check it out and not discount it merely because there is a dude on the cover.

How many people do you think actually follow videogame news? Most won't unless it;s a franchise they are familiar with and enjoy. You can't possibly fault anyone for that.

I am the "mod" being talked to (and apparently being hostile, although I fail to see how. I thought we were both being pretty civil). Just so you know, I am not just "a mod" I am BioWare's Community Coordinator and I run these forums. I think if you are going to be chatting with me and reporting on what I say here, you should know who you are chatting with. :)

As I said in the private messages, we close ALL threads on the same topics. If a thread on, for example, Hawke's shoes is open and has 10 pages of boot vs. sandal discussion and someone else starts a thread saying "I hope Hawke wears boots in DA2", we close it and direct people to the already in existance thread. If someone is talking in generalities where the actual topic is not identical or similar enough to warrant closing, it is left open. This is done at the judgement of staff and moderators. We make mistakes and, depending on how fast threads move between pages, miss some threads. We cannot be everywhere all the time and rely on our friendly and helpful community to point out issues like this. I have yet to see any complaints or questions as to why "Y" thread was not locked when "X" is still open with actual threads. If you have them, please send them to me in a PM (not here as I do not want to further derail this thread).

For the record: BioWare GREATLY values it's female gaming audience. It also values it's male gaming audience who prefer to play female PCs. Just because you have yet to see a video with female Hawke (I do think 5 days after the first trailer of any sort may be a touch soon for complaints, but I know you are passionate for it, so I understand) does not mean that we do not care.

If this is meant in the sense of "lots of people play female characters in our games and we are therefore committed to designing good female PCs" than well and good.  If it is meant in pretty much any other way than...well... or :? or maybe <_< depending on the specific meaning.  And yea, this is a vague post on my part, but that statement made me think of something that could potentially ****** me off, but I don't want to put words in anybody's mouth if I'm not quite sure what they mean.

The temptation is to great. Kirkwall is supposed to be some Templar controlled military state. How could we not create an apostate mage?[/quote]

How much fun would it be to burst into a Chantry to rescue the people from a Harvester and be confronted by a Templar who know's you're a maleficar?

T:"You! What business have you hear, malelifcar?"
H:"To destroy the Maker and usurp his throne! Or you know, save you're dumb ass." *

awesome fight sequence ensues against harvester.

*can't remember where I heard that line.

You are not listening to the what the actual complaints are and are using this as an excuse to attack some non existent enemy. Please, stop. No one is dismissing DA  because it's marketed for men or whatever.

Indeed--who could resist?  I love mage characters to begin with, but from what we've heard of Kirkwall so far, being a mage will only add to the drama.Posted Image  And of course, having already been a Circle mage in DA:O, I'd prefer to play an apostate this time.

If only BioWare would make some sort of Social website where interested parties could make "groups" where fans of a particular interest could gather and have fun targetted to their preferences.

Wait a minute......http://social.biowar...owse_groups.php :)

It happens I know. I often find myself knee deep in argument only to find out the people I'm arguing with haven't been saying what I thought they were saying and there's no substantial difference in our positions.

Personally, if I'm playing an RPG, I won't buy the game anymore if I can't play as a female.  I've wasted money on games that never grabbed my interest, and many times it's because I can't relate as well to a male protagonist.  Am I missing out on wonderful games, by only wanting to play as a female?  Maybe, but I *do* play as a male in plenty of games where the main character is a set character, and there is no customization (Red Dead Redemption, The Witcher, etc...)  I've just made the decision that I'm not going to waste my time trying to enjoy a role playing game where I don't have fun.

Would you say the same sort of thing to a guy who is not comfortable playing as a female main character?  Personally, I don't hold it against male gamers who aren't interested in playing as female, because that's my view too.  If you're more flexible, good for you, but playing as a male isn't something I will ever be interested in, if I can make my own character.

I really don't see Bioware as not respecting their female fans... The mods are used to having to deal with 'spam' threads and even just threads that are discussing the same topic as one already open. They try to keep the threads to a minimum for a reason, and they are well aware this thread has been used for discussing equal representation amongst many other Lady Hawke related things so they directed you here. Maybe you havn't noticed but a lot of the character related threads around here end up turning partly into fan art threads because the fans are so passionate about the game they want to express it through art. That hardly means you can't discuss your issues that relate to Lady Hawke here, in fact I would welcome it personally. It keeps awesome threads like this alive.

Edit: Bit harsh to lump all the 'males' on the forum under one banner. I'm a guy and I support Lady Hawke over Garrett Hawke as well as pushing for a return to a marketing strategy that shows off both male and female player characters for Bioware's games. There are some idiots on this forum it's true, but there are plenty of others like me as well.

Oh my god, Apollo, you're a guy?!?
