Like many here, I am leery of MMO's, though in some ways PW's are not all that much different then an MMO.

PWs are effectively MMOs you as a builder can create. I mean, for the vast majority of active community members I'd wager that's at least indirectly why they're here. But a commercially developed and non-moddable (after all, how could it be, and still be commercially viable?) MMO based on the franchise and storyline of the packaged NWN campaigns? And lets not forget that this franchise includes NWN2. Well...

Also, the discussion reminds me of a point made to me by a friend in the community not so long ago - that another part of the beauty of NWN is in the dungeon master client and the possibilities it allows. Fat chance of seeing anything like that in an MMO, sadly.

Of course I may be regurgitating thoughts already said. In that case: I agree!

Meh... if I can't build and DM with it, and/or have to pay a monthly fee to play it, I have no interest in it.

Exactly.

MMO blow, and its a double barrel shot gun blow.

1 barrel: pay to play

2 barrel: not a true rpg but an online coffee house

Many good points made here regarding standard MMO stuff. I agree with most of it (although I have to admit I've never really played an MMO, so I speak from ignorance).
It is pretty likely to be just what people are saying, and that'll be that for me too. However . . .
it wouldn't have to be.
I can imagine a different kind of MMO, one which does include a DM-client. Why not? With instanced areas and mobs? The DM/Builder could also have access to both standard resources, to populate their areas for their group(s), along with the ability to use custom content for the same things. Core areas could be used at will by DM-led groups, so you could wander the rough streets and alleys of Dock Ward, Waterdeep, but when the DM decides a brawl is in order, an instanced area is loaded for the fight, with NPCs and all, but no PCs not in your DM's list. Other areas, designed and built by the DM/Builder, would be exclusively available to the DM and his/her group of players.
The official servers could run contests and such, discerning the best 'modules' (ie adventures) and content, and could even decide to add those quests to the stock game, making them available to other DMs. Maybe a deal on services could be made to entice the best DMs to do better and better. They could get free subscriptions to the DM client for their contributions, etc.
Now, this could be a pipe dream, sure. But isn't everything a dream, before it becomes a reality? This is an opportunity to leap up over the shoulders of the straining mob of MMO clones; to tower above like an iron fortress; to re-invent just exactly what an MMO is!
Whew, got a bit excited there, sorry. ;)
Of course, it'll most likely not be any of those things, but . . .
I will keep an eye on it, just in case.

This will bomb.

One of the things that has kept NWN1 alive is that you can design content and stuff. MMO's don't let you do that.

Way to go with ruining it Atari.

And who'd play it?

The usual kids who can't write but prefer "R U.." to initiate dialogues. It will be so much better than NWN1 PW's yes. And then you get to pay per month, so that you can be sure you'll never be banned, no matter how many server-rules you break, because who wants to loose a paying customer? Yes, MMO's are awesome... in all the wrong ways.

I’m with you folks on this one. The only reason I came back to NWN is the ability to build/script/write a story of my own. As mentioned, a MMO won’t let you do that. So in all likelihood, I will be playing NWN1 instead.

Also, if the rumors about Cryptic building it are true… Well I’m not hopeful of a good outcome to say the least.

I hope they figure it out, but they probably won’t. Let’s just hope the master server stays up, or can be replaced somehow by the community.

So, a co-op RPG called Neverwinter, using 4th edition rules and has a system that allows players to build their own content. An exclusive Q&A with Cryptic: interview

edit. only five classes: Fighter, Wizard, Ranger, Rogue and Cleric?

Now that was a link worth waiting for! Hmmm, they say it's not a mmo but an OMG? In my language, with the developer concerned and 4th ed rules that translates to Oh My God NO!!!!

My ears perked up at that, although I'll admit I'm dubious. It sounds like a cross between Guild Wars and DDO, and I think it's a bad move for them to make it "harder" to solo. Surely a better approach would be recruitable henchmen (similar to the original NWN or the upcoming TOR) or to make it a bit easier, although the rewards would be less? So say you got a Longsword +3 as a reward for grouping, if you solo'd you'd get a +2 or +1?

I'm not too bothered about the five classes so far as long as we get Halflings as a race(What? I want a Halfling Rogue!). They've said Human, Elf and Dwarf so far, so I would guess that they'll add Halflings, Half-Orcs and possibly Half-Elves before it goes live. I don't think making ones like Yuan-Ti Pureblood, Tieflings, Gnomes etc as DLC/Unlockables/Expansion Races would be too bad.

Well, on one hand it's nice they're starting to talk about it.

On the other hand, I still don't see anything that grabs my interest.  It sounds a lot like something which will be very similar to Diablo in nature.

Add me to the list of people who're highly dubious about this being even remotely good enough and versatile enough to challenge NWN. It'll be interesting to watch it develop, if nothing else.

Can't we at least hope for something good here?

Just because they use the word MMO doesn't mean it has to be like the other mainstream crap.

This is probably not a console game also...so that bodes good in itself.

Just imagine an improved NWN1 but with many proffessional (company) controlled "PW's" and perhaps even private PW's with dungeonsmaster client and everything. Why not? So far...the opposite has not been said.

I don't WANT company controlled PW's. It's a horrible idea. I don't want political correctness, silly kids, crafting, hack'n slash and all the other trope that is making each and every MMO worthless as an RP experience. I don't want to pay to play a game I already own.

NWN's major force is that everyone can design a PW as they see fit, attract the sort of players they want, and ban everyone they do not want. As soon as it is commercial, it'll all be about getting numbers.

Is the master server suppose to go down for some reason?  (Like permanently speaking)

Well, add me to the list (of which I appear to be the sole member, actually, hee hee) of folks who'll watch this game before I close my eyes to it. New things do get created, and I kind of like the sound of some of the stuff they're saying. It really matches some of the stuff I've been saying for a long time regarding the 'standard' MMO paradigm.

Not to my knowledge, but it is a potental tactic.  Probably a very foolish one though.

Agreed.  Why we have to assume right from the start that something is going to be a disaster?  Let people do their work and we can judge it once game is out.  Nobody can, by the letter of law, make us to play it if we do not like it.

Information about the up coming game (OFFICIAL)

I like what they said below in the interview about "Neverwinter" (which will not be called ..."NWN 3")

"It will offer an all-new story that ties into a new series of novels penned by author R.A. Salvatore.
(I love this author, - from the Drizzit Series of Books, this guy writes combat scense with an erie precision)

They are going to be using the New 4th Edition Ruleset, as they are working with WOTC to translate the rules into game.

I think maybe we should all be anticipating this game, hey, if nothing else, you get to meet new players, and have fun doing something similar to NWN 1, at least the graphics will be up to date, YAY!

As there are more links in This Thread, let's use this one to continue the discussion of NWN3/the new NWN game.
