I am currently playing mass effect 2. Probably half way through the game. I’m playing the msv stromtium mule section and now that I am done with the mission it will not let me leave. I have tried to restart the game, restarted the mission, changed characters, reassigned keys. nothing works. is there a way to re set something so I don’t have to replay the whole game

Try to check here and see if you did all right with the mission

There are also 2 known bugs which can prevent you to finish it.. Just check if you didn't something that could trigger one of them
