The one place where I could've seen them making characters bisexual was with some of the more "alien" LIs in Mass Effect 2, specifically Garrus and Tali. Tali actually had dialogue for it. Garrus makes some comment about how he's not attracted toward humans per se--just Shepard. Not only is that incredibly adorkable, it applies equally well to male or female Shep.

Technically, every female romance in both Mass Effect games had lines recorded for same sex romance (only Shepard though, AFAIK - besides Liara there are no same sex lines recorded from the love interests themselves). That includes Miranda, Jack, Ashley, etc. There are same sex lines recorded for the Kaidan and Thane romances. There's also a peculiar line on the disk where M!Shepard says that he "is not screwing Garrus." Possibly something leftover by the denial that Shepard can do to Mordin's romance advice.

Everyone bi? No. Maybe additional bi or gay only characters? Fine. Doesn't really interest me, but I don't see why not as long as it makes sense in terms of story and character.

I can see some context for bi characters; it was reasonably well-justified with Zev and Leliana.  With the asari and Kelly...well, they just love everyone.  With the Jade Empire same-sex LIs, it felt like it was just kinda tacked on there.

I thought the same about the alien romances in ME2 - although i was joking about it before you really would think the if species isn't an issue for someone gender wouldn't be either.

Oh, and you're totally right about the Jade Empire same sex relationships with Sky (mmmmmm, i miss you Sky....) and Silk Fox. We didn't even get to see the big dramatic kiss if it was a gay couple :P

I'm all for gay romances in DA2, but like basically everyone else I think some moderation is needed. As annoying as it may be (aha, my face when I found out that Morrigan could not be romanced by a female Warden), there are going to be characters that identify as straight. I'd like it if they could include multiple options for gay characters, but while at the moment we still don't know that there are going to be bi LIs in the game I'm hesitant to push my luck. ;) (Call me pessimistic, but comments emphasising how small an audience there was for the gay romances and how much time had to be put in for it don't exactly fill me with hope.)

Incidentally, if they do include same-sex relationships in the game, I'd really appreciate if they could be with some of the more plot important characters this time around. Don't get me wrong, I adore Zevran and Leliana, but after a while it occurred to me that both of them are ultimately optional in the grand scheme of things, whereas Alistair and Morrigan are crucial plot elements and arguably more involving LIs as a result.

True enough.  My point was that Garrus and Tali's romances seemed to lend themselves better to same-sex partially because the major hurdles in those relationships are 1) trust/intimacy and 2) being of different species.  Shepard's gender seems like a minor concern, a footnote at best.  Regardless of Shep's gender, Tali says Shep's the only person she'd trust enough to suit-link.  And Garrus' line to FemShep implies that it's not Shep's biology that matters--it's who she is.  The same logic applies to Sheploo.

Though personally, I wish they'd kept the voiced lines in the game so we could hack it like ME1.  Can you imagine Mark Meer saying "reach and flexbility"?  *snerk*

I agree. A compromise i'd quite like to see would be the option to flirt with straight characters of the same gender as your PC, and then get turned down. Hmmm, i am actually serious about this - i think it would make Hawke feel more like 'my' character as i play. That said, i'm not really sure what it says about me that i want to be able to flirt with unobtainable people even in video games

I'm not really sure, but I imagine it says just the same about me because that actually sounds like a really nice idea. Depending on personality and how good your relationship is they can shoot you down completely or let you down gently! ... Seriously, I like this idea.

You can flirt with Oghren, albeit jokingly, if you're a man. He gets super-defensive and you lose approval, though. Guess he thought I was serious when I said I loved him.

I had totally forgotten that bit! But reading it made me remember that if your playing a male warden romancing Zevran, you can ask Alaister if he's jealous at one point - if i remember right he seems a bit uncomfortable. But damn it i want more oportunities for rejection! :P

No, not everyone. That just takes the fun out of it!

I'm all for bisexual relationships, but I'd love to see a gay one too. Bi does not  = Gay, imho. Sexual orientation is a tricky thing. I like that sometimes people just won't swing the way you want. I mean, in DA:O I wished to all hell I could woo Sten, but that just wasn't happening. Like it does sometimes in life.

My ideal would still keep the same formula, but to add on a same sex romance exclusive to each gender.

Edit: spelling mistakes...

Short answer, no

I don't mind a gay relationship or two, but not with whole party. It's unrealistic that everyone is gay.

Its unrealistic to have people shooting fire out of their hands too... :P No reason Thedas has to have the same rules as our world.

(joking around here - like the OP said in her clarified statements i'm really not advocating EVERYONE being bi in the game. Given how easily threads on this topic blow up, thought i should be clear ;))

So you think that sexual orientation is a "learned behavior"? This is ridiculous. I have nothing against people of alternate persuasions, one of my best friends is gay and I know some delightful lesbians and bisexuals, but I can't believe you want to make someone's orientation a choice. Sure, your own character's sexual preferences are completely open to your RPing desires, but sexual preference strikes me as being a fundamental part of a person and a character, not something that should be up for "interpretation".

What you're asking for is almost as ridiculous as the people who say "homosexuals are deviant perverts and only do it because it's kinky."

It is like saying "Alister should like cookies, cos I don't want him to like cheese".

Where's the diversity?

Maybe there should be straight, bisexual and gay options. That way you've got two options options either way you fancy going. Two straight and two gay (e.g. straight male has morrigan and leli, gay male has zevran and extra male gay companion, straight female has Alister and Zevran, gay female has Leli and extra lesbian companion).

This would level the playing field without stripping characters of part of what they are.

I agree 100%, it's exactly what I've started before as my LI hypothetical preference- same formula as DA, but add on gay companion for each gender.

I don't think anyone has made that argument. Saying that you would like fictional characters to be written with certain possiblities is really not the same as saying you think that's how the real world works. I think all people who wanted more same sex options were saying is that they enjoy playing out those storylines and would like to see more options to do so (sorry if i'm putting words in anyones mouth here), not making any statements about the natural of sexuality.

I can't think of a reason why people would be against gay romance options for characters in a game. If you are straight in real life and are offended by same sex relationships...don't flirt with the gay character! Easy freakin' solution. I'm not sure Bioware should make every character bi though, that would require alot of extra dialogue to personalize the voice acting and some personalities I just cannot see swinging both ways. Either way, none of it offends me and I don't have a say in it either so...blah...I'm getting a beer.

I just had to stop hovering over this thread to go buy some beers myself - everything is better with beers.

Not sure i agree with the idea that certain personalities wouldn't seem right swinging both ways, but the point about the amount of voice acting is a good one. More importantly, as you point out, we have no say. So i think the best thing we can all do is get more beer and think about Sky from Jade Empire... mmmmmmm, Sky.....

I'm not offended by it, but one time in DA:O I didn't even realize I had been flirting with Zevran until he suddenly invited me to his tent which caused my character to lose a considerable amount of approval as I wasn't interested.

I just don't want DA2 to turn into some idiotic romance fest like ME2 where you either pursue a romantic relation with a companion to have dialogue options with them, or else they will be busy calibrating until after the act where they will go back to calibrating and have no more to say to you.

And quite frankly, I don't mind gay relationships but the "gayification" of everything in the name of equality is getting on my nerves.

It's fine with Leli and Zev, really. But if suddenly Oghren, Sten and Alistair suddenly became open to everyone (without modding but from developers side) it would really ruin my gaming experience as I don't find it believable, and as far I know they want to create believable stories.

You say that, but what if you pick a closed fist icon and it really doesn't mean what you think?

Also, this " 'gayification' of everything in the name of equality" is happening were exactly?
