I've seen on youtube that there are many movies taken in game (I haven't
watched them for the spoilers, but I've seen there are many). I would
like to take some movies too. Can you suggest me a good free software
able to do that? I used one several time ago, but I can't remember the name!

Thank you!

fraps will let you take 30 seconds of movie (and put it's name over it) with the free version. xfire also can take movies.

A 30s demo can be very useful, but sometimes, you just gotta have more. In fact, I know _Knightmare_ has been showing videos of his Reversal of Fortune battle system demos. They are definitely not stitched together. I have no idea what he's using, but if FRAPS is limited to 30s, then he's not using that.

Additionally, I looked around a bit and this looked interesting (just downloaded it for myself) :

CamStudio 2.0

Here's a snippet of what they say it can do:

You have total control over the output of your video: you can choose to use custom cursors, to record the whole screen or just a section of it and can reduce or increase the quality of the recording depending on if you want smaller videos (for emailing to people, for instance) or you can have "best quality" ones for burning onto CD/DVD.

Additionally I found these:

How To Make A Video Of Your Computer Screen

Using Camstudio to Screen Record Video Tutorials

And, if you look, it seems that CamStudio is the recording tool of choice in these as well. So I'm betting that's a pretty good way to go. Plus, it's free!

Thank you guys. It is true: I think I'll need more than 30sec!

Since NWN2 has already a print screen capability in bundle, I ask myself why they haven't implemented also a screen recorder, as in Sims2 (you can take pics and movies from the game itself)...

Dunniteowl, can you tell me, please, which file formats are supported by camstudio, please?

Formats: depends on the codecs you have installed, but there is a default one included. I had standard Mpeg-4 codec.

I found it completely non-obvious, but to change the area of the video capture you must go into "region" and uncheck "fixed region". It's no longer useless once I figured that out.

I have the full version of FRAPS that I used for those videos which has no time limit and removes the watermark. I then edited it in Windows Movie Maker to change the file size. FRAPS is also useful as it gives a frame rate display so you can see where the game bogs down due to graphics and such.

I never used Windows Movie Maker... so I do prefer a software that doesn't require a second passage in it...

FRAPS can produce a quality video on its own, but the file sizes can be HUGE. My vid in FRAPS was over 500MB originally (but then again it was like 13 mins long), I just loaded it into Win Movie Maker and resaved it in a new format and to chop it at 9 mins 59 seconds (to get by YouTube's 10 min video length limit). Final file size was around 75MB, but I could have made it as small as 1MB. I only chose the larger file size both for increased quality and so that it remained in widescreen format (16:9) .

The full version of FRAPs does have a cost to it, I think somewhere around $30US (only the single payment as you are buying user rights to the software). Future versions/updates and software re-downloads are free after buying it.

I've been using VirtualDub (which is free) for my recoding after taking the video, getting around 90% file size reduction from what fraps produces. I'm not capturing the sound as it isn't important for what I'm doing. Here's a quick video, the file size for that was about 1.5 megs. www.youtube.com/watch The largest video I've done was 11 megs for 30 seconds after VirtualDub processing.

Fraps was $37 when I just checked. I bet it's more full featured and produces better video, but it was beyond my needs.

Ok, I need your help again. I've downloaded CamStudio... and it crashes. So I tried with Fraps. And it crashes too. Last time, it makes the toolset crash!!!
So, what can I use to take 20sec of movie of my oak tree in the wind?

EDIT:
I was forgetting... NWN2 and MotB completely patched, running wonderfully on W7 pro at 64bit.

Vaalyah, depending on the version you downloaded, you might be missing some MS files. There is a beta distribution titled 10/27/10, which is today, basically. And there are also sometimes bits and pieces of the setup that might vary with your hardware. All I can suggest right now is to redownload it (a corrupted download is also possible -- always verify the file size with what you should have) and attempt another installation. If Fraps is also crashing and crashing the toolset, though, then there may be a driver issue at work. Something to consider would be making sure your video card can handle it or that the preferences in the CamStudio is setup to work with your card. (And I don't know exactly how CamStudio functions -- I have downloaded it, but not installed it yet.)

I would offer more pertinent advice except that my desktop computer is haunted right now and I am having to hold seances to get my wireless device to work and doing Gregorian Chants to get the system to boot up without poltergeists flinging blank CDs at me.

The download was correct. A friend of mine has downloaded it and tried the software, before tell me "Yes, the software is good!", so on his system it's working...

I suppose my gpu is not the problem, being a Sapphire ATI 5870 VaporX, my personal small render farm :-D I could try to redownload the Catalyst, but the file is so huge... I need someone to download it for me... Maybe I could try the updated version you are referring too, but a beta distribution is something I would prefer to avoid... Which how this MS file that maybe I am missing?

I didn't get all the details as I was overloaded with information and most of it wasn't relevant (plus I was skimming through it quickly to try to spot a 'smoking gun' bit of information to try to help you sort it out for you.) I just know there was a mention of having to install some MS file or files and I think they were either Visual Basic or .Net files. I honestly don't recall. I was surfing the SourceForge site where the primary files are stored.

If not willing to use a Beta, then the last distribution I believe is dated July of this year. Check the release notes for details on what has to be combined for CamStudio to work and if all else fails, post on the forums for CamStudio and ask for help.

Ok, I redownloaded fraps with an update version and it doesn't crash any more. The problem now is that it saves only .avi files, that are HUGE. Do you know how can I convert them in a smaller output, please?

I just imported the file into Windows Movie Maker and resaved it there in a different format to make it smaller.

Nice idea! Do you also know where can I find it, since in my new W7 pro, it is not installed? Maybe an option from the DVD... hmmmmmm

Running Vista here, but for me it is simply a choice off of my Start -> All Programs menu. Maybe I did something to place it there years ago though. Don't remember, sorry.

No, I had to download it from the internet, due to European Antitrust laws. However, I've already done everything and now my movie is just 19MB (instead of the previous 512MB!). So, a huge thank you to all of you!
