I've seen the pixel-boobies in TW2 games con preview. They look natural to me, not even obscene. They are just there.

No doubt this alone will cause a furor in America. We may have to download the 'North American nipple patch' to get full-game content. Of course, if nipples mean that much to me, I must be some sort of prevert :P

UNderstand 99% of men would be classifed as perverts.

What is with this incessant need for pixel-boobies? Do they really add THAT much quality to a game? I'm thinking no...

You missunderstand, the problem isn't what the games aren't showing; it's that they pretend like there is nothing to show, that there is no such thing as a nipple. I feel like that kind of censorship takes away a lot of believability and seriousness from the story.

There is no censorship. Bioware chose to not include nudity in their game.

Indeed.  They just failed horribly at creating good sex scenes without nudity.

Although, I question the need for such scenes at all.  Why is the romance plot always "say what (s)he wants to hear until s(he) is willing to sleep with you"?  Why must they all end in sex?  It rather dilutes the romance when I know that the end goal is sex before we even begin.  Bleh.

Yes.  We hate nipples so much that we spend billions of dollars every year on porn and use sex to sell just about everything.  Damn Americans being all prudes and uh... what?

Self-censoring is also censoring.

Rather than forcing some pixel porn into the game with "realistic" sex scenes they should rather use the resourses on story.. And I'm no citizen of the US of A, but I do know FOX network... Implications, unpleasant... Lose customers, less money for EA & Bioware, less money on next game.
There is no reason to anger customers unnesserarily, and yes, the world is screwed up when it's alright to portray violence to 13+ but nipples, oh no..

But seriously, it is not needed. I could throw more arguments, but I do not want to go after the player instead of the ball.

There's one school of thought that suggests that violence is something we know from the day we are born.  A mature attitude towards sex takes time to develop.

And closeting children from it doesn't help them in any way. From what I've seen many parents are entirely negligent in teaching children about sex and allow them to develop all sorts of insecurities and very dangerous attitudes towards sex (particularly confusing rape with sex). If this were an issue about maturity then violence would have to be excluded as well as understanding the implications of death and what it really means is just as difficult to grasp as sex. Maybe even more so.

Sadly America is a hot bed (heh) of repressed sexual impulses. Guess which states are the biggest consumers of anal sex toys and porn...

Censorship in this game is fine I think, I don't want family catching a glimpse of my screen and thinking i am playing some sort of pervy porn game.

I do have a suggestion, instead of focusing on faux sex, better to show intimacy, as in closeness between 2 characters, the quite moments between humping, which is probably a lot harder to depict than barbie doll sex. Ah nevermind.

Is your argument that BioWare is censoring themselves because they chose not to include nudity in a game that they created?  Really?

Between the phrase "North American nipple patch" (over which I couldn't help giggling) and Freud, you are now my favorite person.  What's a thread about sex and nudity without Freud, after all?

With TW1, you had to download a patch to unlock the adult content...in the good ol' USA. That is called censorship.

I thought this was already common knowledge.

Well yeah. They're censors. It's their job to stick their noses in other people's business.

Bioware is just avoiding the nudity thing so that the censors don't look at the rest of their game.

Calling attention to yourself is almost never a good idea.

It's not that they simply chose not to include nudity that bothers some of us, I think, but that the awkward way (funky underwear sex scenes) in which they did it implies that they wanted the sex but not the repercussions. It's not that they avoided the nudity but the way they did it.

I'm kind of in the middle on the nudity in games issue.

I think all the criticism that Mass Effect got over it's sex scenes was ridiculous. The scenes in that game where well done, the nudity was not gratuitous at all, and it was nothing that we haven't seen in major Hollywood films. If it is ok in a film why isn't ok in a game, where the nudity is not even real? Just as there are R rated films marketed towards adults, what is wrong with a few games geared for a similar age group?

Really I think Bioware and other people in the gaming industry need to turn a deaf ear to these critics, as they aren't the people who are buying games anyway. Generally these critics are old, moralizing fuddy-duddies that  grew up in the 50s or 60s (or earlier), and never got into gaming. Their generation did not grow up playing games, and so they often view it soley as a hobby for adolescents.

That being said I also don't think nudity in games like Mass Effect or Dragon Age is a necessity, just as a film doesn't necessarily have to have nudity to be entertaining. If Bioware chooses not to show nudity in Dragon Age 2, I don't have a problem with it so long as the sex scenes are still well done & believable. The problem with Dragon Age is that there are multiple shots of the characters posing in their underwear. It all comes across as a bit corny. Hopefully in the sequel if there is no nudity, they portray the characters as nude but just make use of different camera angles to hide or obscure that naughty bits.

Mass Effect 2 also didn't have nudity but it did a much better job with the sex scenes than DAO. They were much more cinematic. Here are a couple from Mass Effect 2, for anyone who hasn't played it:

(Neeedless to say, spoilers ahead)

There is a romance scene in mass effect 2 with Samara. Even though there is zero nudity, the effect of that scene is more powerful than other more explicit scenes

It all depends on how it is rendered
