Just beat ME2, is it worth it to go back and play ME1?

experience and I cannot wait for ME3, but I never played the original
ME, and I realized during my ME2 playthrough that there were some
decisions that were preset for me during the game that I had no control
over, is it worth it to go back and play the first one? plus there were some references that I missed.

Agreed. You'll appreciate the returning characters much more if you've seen them in ME1. You'll also appreciate why people don't trust Cerberus in ME2. Basically, everything having to do with the plot will be better explained if you've played ME1.Nightwriter wrote...
I believe playing ME1 will enhance your ME2 experience.

Plus you'll get to fall in love with the M-35 Mako (I'm serious, I LOVE the Mako!).

It will, but I believe it has to be done the correct order. From a pure gameplay perspective,Going from 2 -> 1 is taking a huuuuge step in the wrong direction. I like me2's story more as well, but thats just me. I doubt anyone can argue the mechanics though. Might ruin some of the enjoyment.

Because people like 'em a lot more when they pretend you've met, while you have actually never seen them before, right?bjdbwea wrote...

No, because once you've seen the characters in ME 1, you see how much worse they're written in ME 2.

Uh.. Why? You don't think Archangel, Tali, Liara, Ash/Kaidan, Anderson/Udina, the Council, Shiala, Conrad, Parasini, etc. etc. and so on make more sense when you've actually met them and know more about themm than 'Hey, we knew each other once'?bjdbwea wrote...

Considering your avatar, I think you'd be of the opinion that playing ME1 is vital to understanding these characters, especially considering how little time they got to explain their stories in ME2.
As others have said, the gameplay isn't as good, but I don't think it was terrible. I also thought the music in ME1 was better.

ME1 is better than ME2. It's a better story. ME1 has slightly worse gameplay as the cover mechanics are kind of flaky and the AI is pretty mediocre but I liked it a lot more.

I completely agree with these people; you should play ME 1. However, in my opinion, ME 2 has a better storyline. This could be because I played ME 2 before ME 1. I'm guessing everyone else here played the games in the correct order. While ME 1 has an superb story, it is far shorter than ME 2. Additionally, as someone else here said, be prepared for horrible combat sequences; and if you are a completionist; you will most likely die of natural causes before getting every achievment. (Not a joke!)
And ME 1 has the best land rover ever, The MAKO!

I don't know, I felt the Mako rocked. Hope they bring it back for ME3. For me, ME had the better storyline, ME2 had the better gameplay.

And to the OP. Unless you make it a habit to watch the Matrix Trilogy without the first movie, or started Star Wars with the "Return of the Jedi", you are getting of your seat, to the next store and grab your copy of ME1 right now! No more typing an aswer, just go. NOW!

What is it you people whine about ME1's gameplay like that? It ain't as bad as you make it seem. I switched between ME1 and 2 multiple times and only needed a brief time to accustom myself to the cover-system.

Inventory was a nightmare in ME, lol. ME2 had a simpler system.

Actually, ME 1's storyline is needed for ME 2. However, I feel that ME 2 has a much longer and more defined story.
In short, PLAY ME 1!!!! (But don't go expecting ME 2.)

You HAVE TO PLAY ME 1 if you play ME 2!!! It is not a choice, but a requirement; go get it NOW!!!
But, ME 2 is far more improved than ME 1. That is why interest in Mass Effect has grown so much since ME 2's release.

Switching and equipping items is a PAIN IN THE A**! However, don't let that detract you from the awesomeness of ME 1's storyline.
