I have started to like Samara's story, also, if that makes you feel any better.  But, I started with JE, went to ME1, then Kotor, the DA . . ME2 is very fun to play, but it's not ME1 (and everything Mystrana says, basically).  The fact that Bw will never make games like this again, makes me sad, and also is making me consider quitting gaming altogether as a hobby.

ME1 is much better, especially if you like RPG's.

The biggest, most glaring difference is the story and writing. ME1 is pretty good. There are some flaws, but nothing major, and nothing that ruins the experience.

ME2 is written pretty terribly and it plays out equally terribly. The A plot is revealed within the first hour of gameplay, and it is riddled with deus ex machina and poorly executed plot devices. There are no twists; there are far too many characters and everything feels choppy and rushed.
Characters are given the most flimsy plot devices to keep them in their storytelling place; Shepard isn't allowed to question the world in which she lives... It's bad.

As for gameplay... Well, ME2 is more streamlined; ME1 gives you more options. A LOT more options. Some people don't like options; some people are impatient and whiny and will say they shouldn't have existed. But that's the thick and thin of it. If you like options and exploration in your roleplaying experience, ME1 has much more to offer and it's handled much more expertly.

ME2 is a watered down action title designed to take up space.

.
Let's debate again!

ME 1 and ME 2 are both excellent games!

Next, ME 2 gives you FAR more conversation options. Remember yesterday's discussion about Tali? ME 1 didn't have the same use of and language as ME 2. Could you comfort a weeping mother in ME 1? In Tali's situation alone, you have seven different choices that lead to different endings. (I will offer an explanation if you need it)

Additionally, any party character in ME 2 (excluding Joker) can die, which in turn, will greatly affect ME 3

ME1 is definitely worth replaying. And I think the same of ME2.

Hopefully more of ME1's story style and character focus is meshed with ME2's gameplay and loyalty missions.

I'm a little happierImage IPB. However, you can interact with your teammates much more in ME 2 than ME 1.

I'd like to point out another thing about ME1 that's different than ME2. There's half the amount of squadmates.

Though the devs said that they did the math and have 30% more dialogue in ME2, they have double the squdamates and amount of npcs. The result is actually having more/longer conversations with the ME1 crew.

I attribute this factor to being a major reason why I found much more immersion in ME1 and felt much closer to the first crew.

why do people say you had more options in ME. I don't remember being able to change my armours colour, add parts to them, the weapons all looked the same and played the same. In ME2 you could change how your armour looks, more then in ME, you had more powers in ME2, you could change your casual appearance, your weapons where unique and played differently. The only thing ME had was the modding system which was good but was made crappy by a terrible by inventory system. So no, ME did not have that many options compared to ME.

ME= fantastic story and great characters.

ME2=Fantastic gameplay and great characters

THIS!!!!

If ME1 had the gameplay and the beautiful scenary of the loyalty missions (like jacob's) on the explorable worlds in ME1... I would argue that it is one of the best RPGs of all time. As it is though, it is still very, very good! One of my favorites. I've played it tons of times. Around 10 I'd say.

@ Shadow

Nah, I never do that.... as I know I'd die, but I would like to ... without the dying b/c IMO Morinth is hotter than Samara and has the sexier voice as well.

For a squad mate stand point, Mornith has the better loyalty power IMO as well.

It's a shame so many people hate her and that she didn't have more dialogue. I really hope she is back in ME3 (as I have her in most of my playthroughs), but I seriously doubt it. =/

What fort said is true. ME2 has more "dialogue" but it's broken up over more characters. That means you ahve fewer conversations with each person and as a result the vast majority of them are underdeveloped.

As far as "more options" go, you're right in a way. Tali's mission does have a lot of variables, but there's nothing that indicates those things will matter. The way Shepard can approach the topic of war and whether or not Tali gets exiled can very easily be ignored in ME3.

And that's doubly true since all these characters in ME2 can die. They can not possibly have an important, vital role in ME3. If they did then they would not have died. ME3 will probably not be vastly different based on choices like that; it's just not efficient for the devs.

ME3 will have a consistent plot that covers all angles, and all these variables will merely provide "color" for the background and sidequests, much like the Council does in ME2.

IMO ME2 is not a great game, merely a decent one. I give it about a 7/10. ME1 was great. ME2 just has too many faults. The only thing ME2 really did better was the shooting (not counting the character skills because ME1 was much better in character skills). That said, I do not play ME for the combat.

Thirty percent more dialogue overall. Including every character; not just the party members.

All the characters expect for Garrus and tali have six conversations.Seven if you romance Jack, Miri, Jacob or Thane. In ME, Ash had the most with 8 conversations. One of those was only accesed if you romanced her.

The devs said in an interview that there's 30% more dialog in the game. They did not say it was 30% more dialog per character. You have double the amount of squadmates and many more npcs in ME2. This equates to more dialog for the ME1 squadmates because there were less of them.

Don't yell at me if you can't do the math.

LOL! That's part of the fun... you're all..."why would you go in there to help samara and then kill her if they both supposedly have the same amount of power?" ... The answer is for the lulz, teh hawtness, and actually if you think about it from a renegade standpoint, Morinth would make more sense to recruit anyway. She'd "owe you one" for saving her life and she would be less likely to kill you later for any renegade things you did since she doesn't go by the justicar code. She'd also be more willing to help you in the future since she is drawn to your power and wants to be around you. :)

Why does everyone say that party characters had more dialogue in ME 1?  Character for character, they don't. Think about all of the individual loyalty missions.

And if that doesn't  prove my point, look at what game and recieved stellar reviews and what game revieved "very good" reviews.
