It's been a long time since I played Baldur's Gate, and I never finished it.  Never got too far into it, either.  Pretty much, I sucked at it.    But, I so enjoyed it, that I wanted to try it again.  Do have a question or two, though.

I like to take my time, wandering around, uncovering all the map, killing things as I go.  Well, some of the NPCs yell at me, telling me to continue on, wondering why I'm lazy, etc.  First question is, if I don't head south right away, if I take my time, doing all the side quests and such (I love questing, and want to get as many as I can done) will bad things happen?  Will my party members decide to up and leave?  I know of one that will, Kagain, if you take too long with him, but I was wondering more about Khalid and Jaheira.  Will they leave, or, if I take too long, will I not be able to do things later in the game?  It's been 16 days now in game, and I still haven't gone to Nashkel.

Which leads me to my second question.  If I do go to Nashkel, and I haven't finished all the side quests I've picked up in Beregost, will I still be able to do them, or will things have changed that I can't go back and finish them?

Sorry for all the rambling, but I want to make sure that I can do all the quests, or as many as I can, and still be able to do the main storyline without penalty, because I took too long.  I can take being yelled at by the NPCs, as long as that's all they do.

Thanks for any and all responses!!

1) If an NPC prompts you to move on, they will eventually leave. I don't think there are any exceptions to this. However, I think Khalid/Jaheira and Monty/Xzar will stop bugging you after you get to Nashkel and talk to Berrun Ghastkill (the mayor). After this (or after you finish the mine) you are free to explore as much as you like unless you take other NPC's with time related quests (Minsc is likely if you're playing a good team). If you don't really know what you're doing, I'd advise only clearing out the areas directly between the towns and leaving the others for when there is no time/NPC pressure.

2) Your Beregost quests will be fine. Unless it's clear that there is some kind of condition that will screw up the quest (such as the quest giver telling you/prompting you to get moving or leaving Candlekeep for the first time) you can leave quests for as long as you like

Thanks for the answers! I was thinking that, as soon as I talked to the mayor of Nashkel, Khalid and Jaheira would quit bugging me, but I wanted to make sure.

Knowing that the quests will be waiting for me helps, too. Thanks again!

The only quests that I can think of which end after a certain point in the story are some of the Baldur's Gate chapter 5 ones, which may be undoable once you get to chapter 7 (though I think these are mostly quite minor ones). Going to Nashkel shouldn't affect anything, however.

I would head south to Beregost and finish up some quests (or most of them) as this will help you level up, and make you a bit stronger as well. The quest design in this game is designed so that you can go where-ever you like, but there may be repercussion to doing this e.g. getting killed more easily.

And no, the game won't punish you if you do quests later - except a few, I think...

Not spoiling any content, but to my recollection there is only one crucial storyline quest that is on a timer, the Lothander quest.

Other than that, some NPCs really want to fight a certain foe or solve a certain quest or they will leave your party, but they provide ample warning. In some cases those are also quests which you can finish by yourself but then you miss out on a few NPC interjections.

Baldur's Gate 1 is a really a good free roaming game. Only few areas are blocked off until you get further into the storyline.

Whilst they do give warning, beware. It is not always enough! If you are asked to do something and then go in completely the opposite direction, then you might not have time to get back! I once had a game where Khaled and Jahiera were complaining about not going to Nashkel. I made my way to Nashkel, but because I didn't speak to the mayor in time, (the crucial act) they left even though I was in the right city! However, so long as you do things in a reasonable time, you should have no problems.

There's the BG poison quest (as mentioned) and the TotSC werewolf quest which both give you something like 10 days (ample time) to do them in. Many NPCs also give you a time limit for their quests.

I had a game where Minsc had been whinging for ages about finding Dynaheir.
I was headed in roughly the right direction, but obviously not quick enough as Minsc went mental and attacked my party. He killed Khalid and Imoen before he was taken down too.
Now I always try to go directly to any party-NPC quest as soon as they mention it.

I take my time also JolarEQ - clearing all the "black" off of an area when I explore it.

I'm not sure about the mayor being the fix for Khlalid/Jaheira but since you posted nine months ago I guess you do!

In my case, right now everytime Jaheira says something it starts with, "Things stir to south as we speak..."

I'm in Beregost now and am quite sure my party spoke to the mayor when we went thru and picked up Minsc in route to Dynahier to complete our group.

Then we backtracked to FA Inn and started clearing Lion and Coast Ways; Beregost (with a few straphangers to complete later); High Hedge. Planning to hit South Beregost and North Naskel next before thoroughly scouring Nashkel.

Hoping Khalid and Jaheira don't "pop smoke" on me but if they do, oh well, enter Kivan and Branwen.

As for the Beregost, FA Inn side quests I've never known them (e.g. Gurke's Cloak, Landrin's Spiders, Bjornin) to spoil with age so I think you're good there.

As to what lummoxybez says above. True enough. Minsc will flip out and attack the party. I think he made a couple of kills on my party too when that happened. I ALSO learned the lesson after one experience.
