I bought and downloaded DA: O from Steam while on vacation. Now that I'm home, I want to get the game onto my desktop. My download speed here is atrocious, and I don't feel like waiting the 12+ hours it'll take to re-download and then transfer my saves, so I've copied all the game files and character files/saves, etc from laptop to desktop. However, since I bought the game through Steam, I'd like to be able to continue launching it and tracking playtime, etc through the program.
Is there any way to get Steam to recognize the transferred game files, or do I have to re-download in order to have full compatibility with Steam?

Normally if you have reinstalled Steam on your new computer, moved your full Steam\\SteamApps folder to the new computer and also moved the full Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age folder to your new computer Documents folder, you should be able, once connected to the Steam and EA accounts you used on your previous computer, to play the game without any issue.

I copied the "dragon age origins" folder from steamapps on my laptop to steamapps on my desktop, while out of Steam and then opened it up, but it's still prompting me to download/install instead of play.

Copying this folder is not enough because there is data for DA:O inside SteamApps folder but outside "dragon age origins" subfolder. I really suggest you to copy the full SteamApps folder to your new computer.

Alright, I got it up and running.
The reason I was hesitant to transfer the whole folder is because my only means of transfer is a 14GB of flash drive space. I tracked down the rest of the Dragon Age files and transferred them, and all's well.
Thanks!
