So, anyone playing/played this yet? Is it as bad as the reviews I'm reading about it? I'm getting the Demo right now but still scared it might ruin my love for Gothic, at least until Piranha Bytes gets the right over their title back from a crazy publisher!
I guess you´ve already played Risen? It follows what happens in the world after Xardas´s ending from Gothic 3, changing the way things lookin game for obvious reasons. Besides giving traders unlimited money, it felt a lot like Gothic 1/2.
From all the previews, Arcania didn´t feel quite like Gothic to me. They even went and put Nameless from Gothic as an enemy, although it seems that wasn´t that bad in the end (anyone can confirm, please?)

Played it and finished it, I never actually played any of the previous Gothic games (except for number 3 which I just couldnt get into because of the horrible combat system, the game looked like it showed promise in other areas but I just diddnt play enough of it to find out) and I say you should probably give this game a miss.
The game has a few redeeming qualities like the game world looks fairly pretty (unfortunately the females do not, especially the hag your character is saddled to marry at the start of the game, urk) and the combat is a HUGE improvement over Gothic 3 (thats not saying much though) however everything else in the game falls apart. The voice acting sucks, the quests are repeditive and boring, the story is uninteresting, and there is a total lack of freedom (which is I am told one of the best things about the previous Gothic games), seriously the game for the first half of the game is pretty much do all quests in one area unlock (yes unlock, there is no free roaming here) the next area and repeat until the second half of the game which is pretty much grind through a heap of enemies while following a linear path to the end of the game.

But I think Risen looks a lot better, plays a lot better and is a lot more a true "Gothic" game than Arcania will ever be. The leveling/skill system is just a poor attempt to emulate The Witcher's without coming close the deep refinement TW has. Where are the trainers? Where are the actual need to train some abilities to be able to kick azz! Just drop a point here and there and that's it?
Cheers for Risen 2. I love PB games mechanics and Arcania has none of it! Hey, but it has a Shepard right? Guess ME fans might like that! LOL

Personally, I'm increasingly suspicious of ip's getting tossed around more than a floozie in a frat house. If it's not the same dev team doing a sequel, then to me, that's a huge red flag.

Yeah I have been meaning to try Risen however it wasnt released in Aus (Had something to do with hookers in the game and the fact we have no R18 rating).
Hmm.. there are a bunch of Australians that have got the game despite the ban. Imported or digital version. Works fine I guess. (They said the ban is because of the weed beein called weed and giving xp points for chars that smoke it - There are hookers and drugs in The Witcher too and that one got approved for Australia, because the coca.. err.. white powered drug there is called something else.. Fistech. And gives no benefit to the character! (guess the comittee didn't try fistech on a very drunk Geralt. It gets him sober immediately!)
Oh, forgot to say. The ugly bride in Arcania.. she looks exactly like "Jack", the 12yrs old girl in Riddick's Pitch Black. Real shame she didn't turn in Kyra, 5 years later in The Chronicles of Riddick!
Jack

is Kyra

What happened in my first run with Risen is that I rushed through chapter 1. All subsequent runs I took my time exactly in chap. 1. It is the best chapter 1 in any game I can remember! Every time, past first run, chapter 1 alone took me 25 hours. I've replayed it recently and I had that exact same feeling! Of course it can be done much faster but it ain't half as fun, imho.
What I can say from Arcania is that it may be a fun game but not nearly as much as to deserve a Gothic brand. Level up system is awful, combat system is so/so. They both adapt some of TW style but in a very generic way.
And player reviews at GameSpot says about the same thing as Damariel in above post but with a lot more Rage to it! =)
EDIT: OMG. It will be very hard for me to play this Arcania game with all the dreadful women in it! A Zerg Queen is a lot more attractive than those!
Plus I get like 10FPS on Ultra, 12FPS on Medium and 15FPS on LOW! WTF, the game is not that great to be so demanding! (Even with the hotfix, mind you!)

It is not a bad game at all. It is actually a pretty enjoyable game. All it takes is a light approach and not having an expectation that it is actually a Gothic game. For me, the exploration mode gameplay, I mean, the way I play it, clearing every pixel of every area without trying to advance quests by following quest marks works fine. Most of the side quests that were said to be boring, so far, I have actually had it done at the moment the quest giver was first met because I would already have all the parts done already. So it's not actually that boring for me because they just fit into the "exploration mode I mentioned, without having me actually looking for quest items and such.
Of course, it still has the ugliest women in any video game, ever! And it gets worse and worse. never better. Poor devs must be married to some themselves. Ones that would bash their heads on the wall if they came up with beautiful feminine forms and faces like a Leliana or the LotF. Graphics are good though.
Combat is pretty ok. Skill tree is very simplified. The timed attack reminds something of The Witcher but that is a skill based move so it is optional. I can't say anything about the magic system. I don't like playing mage characters so perhaps people who do may enjoy it. It is very simple and a bit like Risen's elemental trees. Doesn't seem to have the more advanced choices that Gothics and Risen offer for the Circles of Magic.
All in all, it's a 7.5/10 for me. As long as I don't try to see it as a real Gothic game. Otherwise I would be filled with Rage!
EDIT: LOL. Loved how a guard on a bridge said I couldn't cross, need permission from whoever, blah, blah, blah. When he was over with it, I just crossed the bridge and went about my exploration! Were him a Denerim/Alienage guard, he would keep pestering me until I give up!

I just wanted a look at the sea! - Gothic has always been Open World. Although I even enjoy playing this game, despite all bugs, flaws and poor development choices, it does not deserve Gothic in the title!
Hey, I had similar death in Risen but... it was my choice. I did it on purpose! I could climb the highest peak of the highest mountain and then try to fly if I wished! That is FREEEEEDDDDDOOOOOOMMMMM™ (© William Wallace)
Risen - Super Fast Mouse is hard to control!

Yes, i think they want gothic 4 to be easy because they want the game to be popular in America. The game has in the Options menu 2 settings, american version and european version. The american is easy and the european is some "hardcore"
that's bull****! actually these two settings only differ in color adjustments. the european version is less colorful than the american one. there is no change in difficulty - both versions are stripped to casual.
btw: gothic 4 is by far one the worst games ever created! keep this horrible piece of software at distance. period!

There was a place you could only get levitating from the monastery. Nothing big there, but it was fun flying there.

Gothic 2 The Night of the Raven is one of my most favourite RPGs ever.
Gothic 3 sucked. A lot.
Gothic 4 "Arcania" is better than Gothic 3, but it is very simple game with trivial combat. Oh well.

Divinity II got pretty medicore reviews too but I thought it was a damn good game. I'll give this one a look after I'm done with Fable III maybe.
I think non USA reviews were quite good. Noted this sometimes with european games.

The last one is simply ridiculous. I wonder if that's the idea that devs have about having fun in a video game! And their concept of Open World is kinda of Crazy! Nice fall though!
