I know a lot of people have the installation issue when it's trying to install Patch 1.03, and everyone says that running the installer in compatibility mode will fix it. Well, I have a different issue. When the overall installation reaches about 95% completed, I recieved a message saying that "Dragon Age Awakening has encountered a problem and must close." I've tried installing 4 times now, and I keep getting this error. What can I do to fix this?

P.S. I'm running Windows XP SP3.

Are you installing patch 1.03 on top of Origins/Awakening? Awakening includes patch 1.03, and trying to install it again could lead to issues.

I installed patch 1.04 then installed Awakening, then I reinstalled Dragon Age: Origins, the Awakening, and it still didn't work.

I think you might have to uninstall everything, then reinstall in the following order: Origins, Awakening, and then patch 1.04 last.

Ehhh, I don't see how that will help, but I'll try it.

Well, patch 1.04 rewrites several Origins files that Awakening needs to look for during installation. I'm not sure all the details, but somehow, having a later version interferes with Awakening's ability to find them.

But, I reinstalled DOA before, then tried installing Awakening, still the same error.

Did you try to install Awakening after you installed an unpatched version of Origins? Or was it with a patch 1.04 installation in between? Because, as I said, patch 1.04 makes it impossible for Awakening's installer to find the correct Origins files it depends on. If you install Origins first, Awakening installs the equivalent of patch 1.03 to the original game.

Yes, when I originally had Origins and 1.04, I tried to install Awakening. Then when that didn't work, I reinstalled Origins and went straight to Awakening after that.

Gotcha. Not that I can help much with this-- there seems to be some kind of weirdness going on with Windows XP SP 3, patch 1.04 and reinstalling the game that no one seems to be able to get to the bottom of. What it doesn't seem to be is the following: registry keys left behind, the Content Updater service not uninstalling, and DVD drive issues.

See the following:

I'm curious if making a disk image of the Awakening DVD might help and using it to install, but it all seems like a crapshoot. Does Origins actually run for you now?

Yup. It ran fine.

And I saw what you said in the other thread. This time, I tried uninstalling Origins completely, and I ran CCleaner, and now I'm attempting to reinstall.

Can you do me a favor and go to Event Viewer (right click "My Computer," "Manage," and then expand "Event Viewer" on the left side menu)? Check the "Application" log and see if you can find the error related to Dragon Age (red circle with an x) crashing. Could you tell me what the error text says?

I don't see any application that directly states DA, they just say things like "Application error". Doesn't say for what.

You might have to expand the window fully to see the name of the faulting application. You can also filter for error messages specifically (you're going to have a ton of messages, most with the little "i" in the dialog cloud next to them). Do this to filter:

# On the View menu, click Filter.

# Click the Filter tab (if it is not already selected).

# Specify the filter options that you want, and then click OK. (Choose "error.")

The source still only says "Application error". I see nothing about Dragon Age.

Can you double click on the entry? That should give you the faulting application, and a bunch of additional information. If there's anything related to Dragon Age (dasetup.exe or whatnot), could you copy all of the detail text here?

Faulting application setup.exe, version 1.3.11253.17, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x018c64d6.

This was the latest, which was from about a minute ago when Awakening failed yet again at installing.

Crap, I was hoping there would be a hint about what module faulted... Ugh, sorry this is so frustrating for you! Can you tell what file it crashes on during the install?

I'm trying it again, I'll pay attention to which one it crashes on.

Nope, when the error message comes up it blocks the installer. The last thing was it finished with the doa_prc_ep1 and it finishes with that, and I assume when it moves on to the next section it crashes.

I wish I could tell you what was going on... The last thing I can think of is for you to try to install Awakening using Windows 2000 compatibility mode (I've seen that solution around somewhere). Here's how to do it on XP:

1) Right click the Awakening DVD in Windows Explorer, and choose "Open."

2) Right click the setup.exe (da_setup? I can't remember what it's called in Awakening) file, choose Properties.

3) Choose the "Compatibility" tab, and select "Windows 2000" from the drop-down menu.

**fingers crossed**

I actually tried that awhile ago and it still didn't work.

I wonder if compatibility mode is "sticking" after you close the window. Apparently on XP it doesn't if you're running a file from CD. What I'm about to suggest is probably a complete waste of time, but...

Copy all the files on the CD to a folder on your hard drive. Set compatibility mode on the copied setup.exe file to Windows 2000. Hopefully this will work... If the installer chokes again, apparently you can manually unzip the zipped files and place them back in the correct directory in the folder you made on your hard drive.

Didn't work. I booted the computer up in safe mode, and the installation worked there, now the problem is I can't click the "Other Campaign" option. So, it's installed, I just can't access it...
