Personally I would love to see ME branch off into other genre as well.

Something like a Freelancer / Privateer style game in the ME universe.
Something 4x as well would be fantastic.

Then, if you could link your save games to it so the universe is different would be phenomenal.

Then mix it with the FPS ME spinoff, so you could be running the universe via 4x, initiate a raid on a Geth world with a space assault in a Privateer / Wing Commander style, then land on the ground and take it to them C&C style, once a foothold is established take it to them in a FPS style. Then unleash your spy on the Batarian's and spend hours doing an RPG style game sabotaging the enemy and retrieving information.

I think I just ****ed.
Edit : ****ed is censored, so let me re-word that " I think I just became extrodinarily excited in my pants."

This is BAD news......just found this on IGN

Mass Effect may soon be adding multiplayer gameplay.

A new job listing posted on Electronic Arts' website suggests the franchise will be adding a multiplayer component sometime in the future. The listing calls for someone to take Mass Effect's "existing single player user experiences and make them multiplayer safe."

It should be noted this listing is for BioWare's studio in Montreal, which offered development support for Mass Effect 2. The franchise is primarily developed in Edmonton.

It's possible this could be a multiplayer expansion for Mass Effect 2, or an additional component for Mass Effect 3.

:unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure:

what's next ? Getting rid of the RPG and turn it into a friggin FPS:?:?:crying:

This news actually came out months ago, so they're probably already working on it. Hopefully they do something  where its you and other people versus a computer AI. Maybe an endless arena mode (**** Zombies, Gear of War Horde mode to name a few), or a few objective ones where you gotta do this, this and this. It could work if they did that, but of course the money maker is in team deathmatch. I read something about Dead Space 2 having a multiplayer mode where its co-operative against AI enemies. Hopefully (if its real) it'll be real popular and show EA that a game doesn't need to be a fragfest to have good multiplayer

If Bioware has a different studio develop the multiplayer component like was done for BS2 and is being done for Medal of Honor and as long as it's vs. AI then I have no problem with it.  I mean, I'd love some sort of a hold the line horde mode.  You could also do time based objectives vs. other people, i.e. my team finishes the stage in 3 minutes and your team finishes it in 2:55, thus you win.  I don't think deathmatch would well with ME because of the way powers work.

Oh wow a Darkspawn Cronicles mode......Great............:unsure::unsure::?  NOT!

Hey, a lot of Bioware's ideas in the past, written on paper, seem kinda stupid. but they always pull them off amazingly. I have faith that if BW did it their way, it could be a great add-on to the game that won't detract anything from the real single-player mode. Unfortunatly, I have absolutly no faith in EA...

Multiplayer, co-op always have a negetive impact on SP wheter it is AI  or other areas:mellow:
i haven't see any multiplayer game that didn't

BioShock 2 has MP and it didn't detract from the single player.  As I said, you essentially need two studios, one to develop the SP and one to develop and MP and while you ship and title them together, you are essentially creating 2 different games.

But how much better would have the Bioshock 2 sp be if they'de used all the resources that went in mp to make sp experience better? No matter how many studios there are developing it. I just hope all the multiplayer talk has nothing to do with ME2 or ME3 or ME universe in general.

Pretty sure nobody can answer that, not even 2K/Bioware.

I can understand your apprehension if we were talking about switching ME3 over to a first person perspective, but the OP specifically referenced a spin-off game not involving Shepherd's saga.  Besides, both Bioshock games got excellent reviews and demonstrate that a FPS can entail a rich backstory, a haunting environment, unique and engrossing gameplay, AND multiplayer aspects.  It's really up to the studio to go for that though.  I tend to think BioWare would be one of the studios capable of pulling this off.

As alluded to in a previous post, it seems that BioWare is already at work in implementing multiplayer components into ME3.  This is where I tend to agree with you in being a little more skeptical regarding taking away development time for the single player.  I am half hoping that it's really only supposed to entail adding co-op modes, but I can also see possibilities for a unique, non-deathmatch fragfest competitive multiplayer.  Again, it's up to BioWare to not be stupid enough to fall into the same kinds of multiplayer that we find in COD, GOW, and everything else.  Obviously, if people wanted to play THAT kind of multiplayer, they would inevitably just go play those games as the gameplay would obviously be better since that is their main priority.

All any of us can do is just hope that BioWare will have the good sense to make multiplayer components of ME3 a unique take on the multiplayer experience.  Personally, I choose to believe that they have this kind of good sense until they force me to say otherwise.

Yep, not much else to do than hope for the best that ME3 singleplayer won't be affected if there really is mp thing coming on it. (Which I still hope it isn't.)
As for the fps spin-off. I have nothing against fps if it's done well and has good story, but for the mp aspect that's usually coming with it. I'm not fan of any multiplayer aspect on games since I don't get much from them being story is everything kind of player.

First post and I can't really believe some of the fan(boy)s here.

First off:

FPS =/= Crappy shooter with crappy story, sure there are games like the Halo Series, the CoD Series, the Quake series, the Doom series, etc that are great shooters (I said shooters) with crappy stories.

Then there's the FPS gems like the Half-Life series, the System Shock series, the BioShock series and so on, just because it's played from first person and it has guns doesn't make it a shallow, one time thrill.

Look at VALVe for example, they have the Day of Defeat, Counter-Strike and Team Fortress series for those looking for comptetitive multiplayer, they have the Left 4 Dead series that are a great mix of a story driven game with Co-op, they have Portal (And Portal 2 next year), basically a First Person Puzzle game and finally they have one of the most influentials series, the Half-Life series.

Half-Life 2 for example has a great gameplay, great graphics, a great story, great, believable characters and it's not even a RPG.

If BioWare developed a spinoff SP or Coop (Those aren't mutually exclusive like SP and MP like some of you believe) Mass Effect game that uses a FPS camera angle, it would be just that, a change in the camera angle from third person to first person, in fact, I'm willing to bet you can switch the camera angle on ME1 and ME2 to a first person angle since both games are based on the Unreal Engine 3, a game engine most used for FPSs and TPSs.

The old Dooms don't even have stories. But they're two of the best games ever made. And I would argue that Doom 3 is a survival horror game. Scared the hell out of me. The story was really pretty well done. Talk all the smack you want about Halo and CoD, but leave Doom out of it. All time classic.

Damn, didn't mean to talk smack Doom, I guess that came out wrong, I wanted to mention those FPSs because they have Great gameplay with not so great stories, I myself couldn't get into Doom 3 enough to play it fully, probably helped because there's no duct tape on mars.

Its cool. I didn't mean to sound beligerent. I just love Doom far more than is healthy. Also, there's some good flashlight mods for Doom 3 which make the experience a lot better. Check it out.

I don't know that it's possible to answer that question because they are seperate games.  If BS2 hadn't had a MP component I don't think the SP would have changed at all because the company behind the SP would still have done their thing the same way and the company doing MP would never have been involved.

And I still don't understand the hatred everyone here has for the FPS genre, which basically is changing the camera from over the shoulder to well, a first person camera.

Why go for a new FPS? Remember your roots with Castle Wolfenstein and Doom 2

agreed 100%. keep mass effect 3 the way it should be and honestly if it ends up having fps element in it i may actually pass because as much as i love bioware and all but if they do happen to favor the fps fanbase than honestly mass effect 3 may not be a purchase for me. the additional shooter elements in 2 imo worked great but theres one thing in games i hate and that would be the fps camera angle

I prefer Mass Effect to stay third person shooter, better that way but a DLC would be cool,a combined FPS/third person perspective...(I like third person and FPS games) also I hope there are some third person Call Of Duty games that allow you to see your playable characters...

I'm fine with the ME property branching into other genres, I just don't want BioWare to develop those games. BW makes RPGs, and damn good ones. EA's got studios out the ass, it shouldn't be that hard to milk the franchise. DICE can make an ME FPS. I want BioWare to do what it does best.
