I'm thinking of starting another character playthrough with me being the tank instead..and so since i'm gonna be a tank, poor ali won't need needed i guess? what with the lack of group space and all...
If I don't use him, does it affect the story/ending in a serious way?
Because i heard some endings where he became king of freleden of something along that line.
If you don't use him, does he still become like that?
And does romance work with only group members..or what? As in can i romance alistair even if his not part of my group?
Alistair? Vital? Hmm..

Romance can happen without people being in the group, it can make it either easier to harder depending on what type of character you're playing, Lelianna is easier if your character is good, and Morrigan is easier if your character is not so good. As for Allistair being king, that "option" comes no matter what.

His story progresses with or without him. However, there are some sections where you are required to bring him along for plot reasons (or at least highly encouraged to), so it's probably best to not just completely forget about him.

There's only one section where you *have* to bring him along. My female noble was a tank, and I never felt like he was as good at melee DPS as Sten or as useful as Leliana, but I still managed to romance him (and break his heart) and did his personal quest.

That's... a large spoiler. You need him during an important event... maybe. I don't want to go into details.
I did not use him! I was charmed by he and Leliana. They eventually made me choose. I went for Alistiar first, but Leliana's reaction was so bizzare and uncomfortable, I reloaded and dumpped him.
I still managed 100 approval though.
