I saw earlier someone complain that because it wasn't marketed in DA:O you could play female they had no clue and played through first before finding out you could play female from the forums? Seriously, the big male/female gender signs don't give that away?
Are you referring to the person who hadn't played Mass Effect until they were informed on this site they could play as female and then when out to buy the game? Does that sort of prove the whole point of this thread? How marketing the games towards a male audience ends up costing BioWare potential female buyers.

Curious, why does having a female lead market the game to females anymore than having a male lead? If you like the way the game looks and plays what's the big damn deal?
lol ok, guess I'm in the minority then, because as is, the male Hawke in no way represents me.
Hey bioware, got any pudgy, balding middle aged married guys with a kid you can use for marketing?
It's the archetype more than anything else. It's specifically designed to appeal to the male viewer (and more specifically the teen male.)

In no parallel universe would a married, middle aged bald guy be able to save the world.

Do you have think about, that women look at the awsome Hawke more, then to a Hawkess. Girls with big breasts and small clothes are only for men... so bioware has made for women the trailer.. Haha..
Wow:blink: I have never thought of it that way... Woot!

I'm curious as to where these sites get their numbers. I'm not saying the information is wrong but I think it'd hard to get acurate numbers from surveys or whatever methods they use to get their estimates.

Who does it classify as gamers? People who play real games, quite often or people who have a game of Bejewelled and the like every now an again?
Both.

This is defined as 1 hour per week and could just as easily include Madden, Rock Band or Hello Kitty Island Adventure as any other game. I have shown MMORPG stats previously in the post that show more women are playing MMORPGs than men. I do not have stats on non mmo rpgs, but then few of them market at all to females leading the female mmo market to lean heavily on mmos
but the question is are you implying that the male demographic does not play bejeweled?

I'd say Bejewelled players aren't really gamers, more Casual gamers if anything. My 68 year old aunt plays Bejewelled, I wouldn't call her a gamer though because anything else would confuse her.

So what percentage of people who would ever actually play DA2 are women? Anyone have even a guess?
It's really impossible to answer that because it's a hypothetical. There are almost certainly more women out there who are unaware of what DA games are like who would love them if they gave them a try. I would be interested to know what the breakdown is of people who played Origins, though.

No. I am implying that the the percentage of female gamers is so high because it is counting stuff like Bejewelled, and the Sims and all that jazz. I'm not saying men don't play those games (Hell, I used to play the Sims back in the day).
If it only counted things like RPG, FPS, RTS and not Wii shovelware and casual games, then I guess the percentage would be more skewed towards men.

I have given MMO RPG stats stating there were more female WoW players. I would say that covered it

You know, the gender breakdown at gaming/pop culture cons is usually around 60/40 men to women. So yes, there are plenty of women into super nerdy crap and not just Solitaire or Bejewelled. Again, men are still the majority but women are a significant segment of the audience. 40% is a huge part of your potential customer pool to be ignoring.

MMORPGs are not RPGs. There is a vast difference between crap like WoW, Guild Wars,TOR and games like Baldur's gate, KOTOR and Dragon age.
I don't see why you keep bringing up that theres more women in MMORPGs. Its a different genre.

Well my 62 year old mother, who does not play combat rpgs, heard me talk about DAO and decided she wanted to play. After a 2 minute explanation on the concept of tanking strategy she shooed me away. She defeated the archdemon and went on to play Awakenings and almost all of the addons. She's now reading game informer and is excited about mage finnishing moves.
I got a few complaint calls about how dare Sten stand up to her like that, but it was fascinating at how easy it was for her to lose herself in this game. The game is very good for any woman of any age.
If someone wants to play a game they will learn it nomatter what their age.
I know these are both anecdotes, but it seems such a waste to not market a game that provides such a great experience for a female player to female players.
