Ummmm......so being a female is a great thing????
I see.
Well they can see all the great things about dragonage if they care to notice dragonage.
Not advertising a female will not stop them.

Why do so many people seem to be arguing that advertising is a waste of time and money?
It's really quite odd...

I don't think it's a waste of money, but I do think it's a waste of money to make specific advertising for specific audiences other than your core audience. I mean take current advertising for household products, back in the day advertising was more towards the male audience, then the realized that women were the main ones doing the shopping for the home, so marketing was shifted to appeal to women and sales went through the roof. They aren't saying that men don't shop for household products or even that men don't use them, but instead they are marketing towards their core buyers that will bring in the most money for them.

I think this post more than anything else you've posted, shows just how little of this conversation you've actually followed.

Where are you getting info it does not?
I have yet to see an advertisement anywhere other than the internet and decide to play that game or even look into it.
This being a career game owner/player.

ummmmmmm............ I saw the commercial on TV for Dragon Age and that's what made me want to check the game out.
Advertisements for BG2, IWD, IWD II and NWN in magazines are what made me want to check the games out.

In fact I can safely say the only game I've heard about via the internet before release has been DA:2

One last thing from me: if the OP thinks the BioWare forums are sexist, then I'd invite them to post this same thread in the Witcher forums.

Stop putting words in my mouth.

It has nothing to do with sexist.

Witcher, Assasins Creed, Uncharted 2 etc. Tons of games choose to only have one set character and that is fine. I am sure they are great games. It isn't my cup of tea to play as a man so I don't play those games. I am not angry at them for not making female characters that is their business.

But if ou have a female charcter why make your packaging look like you only have one set uncustomaizable male character?

A career game owner/player is someone already familiar with games and what they want in them as well as where to go to find what they want in future games.

You are not the person being targeted by ad campaigns for obvious reasons. You most likely already have a working understanding of what the game is about or someone you know already does.

This is not the case fr the vast majority of people and gamers.

And no. You made the claim that most people learn about new games/become interested in them through word of mouth and the internet. It's up to you to support/prove that.

"While male video gamers still outnumber women 2 to 1, women have the edge in online games, a survey has found."

http://news.cnet.com..._3-6123172.html

you can argue the merits of this Nielsen survey, but the fact is we are far more common than marketers will acknowledge.

I edited the title for you as you omited a key element in trying to support your arguement. While the percentage population of online gaming audence may be growing or higher, the audence for our games is still predominantly male. This does not mean the female gamer, or again, the male gamer who prefers to play a female character is less important, but it should in part explain why some marketing campaigns are targetted as they are.

As I said in another thread, BioWare always has and continues to greatly support and value our female gaming audience. I hope in the (roughly) 8 months between now and launch female gamers find materials in our marketing that they enjoy. :)

You do realize that one reason why your target audience is largely male is because you advertise almost exclusively towards them?  How do you expect new people to buy your game if you don't advertise to them?

BioWare seem to operate the polar opposite of any other companies.  Most companies keep their product the same and change their advertising to reach a new demographic.  BioWare changes their product to reach a new demographic but advertises them to exactly the same demographic.  Which is probably why ME2 didn't reach this mythical new audience and why DA2 will probably fail to do the same as well.

Personally I think advertising the fact that you can play as both male and female, and making that a key part of your advertising, would do your games a world of good sales wise.

Most advertising of games happen through word of mouth.
Or on the internet where you can figure out you can play as a woman.
Besides saying outright that you can play as a woman is likley to cause misunderstanding.
Advertising now doesnt say here YOU CAN PLAY AS A MAN.Would cause mixed messages if you did that with women.

The difference is that bioware can advertise with posters, screenshots, gameplay trailers, cinematic trailers, websites, etc etc they are not confined to a 30second tv add.
It would not be hard to make some of these with femHawke in it.
And, obviously, it needn't be so blatant as to state "YOU CAN PLAY AS A WOMAN!!" and the amount of money that gets spent on advertising would suggest that bioware doesn't agree with you that 'word of mouth' most effective.

I think dragon age is a great game for females - one of the few where you can play as a woman who isn't designed to appeal to pubescent boys and where npc women who appear in the game are likewise treated the same respect as male characters; fighting alongside them and many have positions of power.
Bioware is one of the best if not the best developers out there for women, they should be proud of that, not hide it!

I very much agree

Bioware just needs a consistant face to DA2; in the end, I guess Garrett Hawke became that face (but yes, I know Marian is just as important because they are technically the same person)

By the way, you shouldn't let the protagonist sex turn you off from a game! I know the genre is different, but I played Bayonetta and absolutely loved it (because of the combat and the little story it had)!

And where is bioware going to advertise with these posters, screenshots, gameplay trailers, cinematic trailers? Their websites such as these right? Where they come on and answer the questions? Where "NEW" players aren't going to have a clue about coming too. How do you adverstise to the masses? T.V. and magazines. Sorry but when you putting out the money to buy a t.v. spot or a magazine add, your going to market the add to your core audience.
