What exectly is it that the DA:O marketing is missing again?

I dunno but rewatching the tv commercials I keep asking myself 'What the **** does this have to do with dragon age?'

Nothing.

Its advertising.

Thats the point.

Lots of venom in here.

I'm all for female protagonists in games. I was disappointed femshep never got her due. After all, Hale is the better voice actor.

But advertising demands an instantly recognizable face. Bioware chose male because more men than women buy their games.

Personally I research anything before I buy. I think most people do. And if you do that with this game, you will discover that you can indeed play as female.

One problem I had with the marketing of DAO and ME and ME2 was that until I was forwarded an article by a male (months after the game came out)  I didn't know about the rich interactivity or the ability to play as a female.

I understand that it is mentioned in articles about the game
, but in all marketing materials the featured character is male as it has been in ME, ME2, DA:O and DA:O-A.

To be clear I really don't care what the specifics of what the female hawke will look like.

I am only concerned in how more NEW female gamers can be brought into the game.

This is a thread about marketing, not accusations of offense.

Have you tried showing any of the DA2 marketing materials to female gamers not familiar with DA:O?

What was their response?

It's not the fault of the marketing that you wern't informed.

I agree with this sentiment. I also believe that it can only help to show us what Lady Hawke looks like (which we have confirmation of), or to hear her voice. I would love a trailer; it need not be Blur.

I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just pointing out that that cover is a fanmade cover from VGBoxart.

My bad then but thats 1 out of how many? I used that one because I saw PS3 and it was a different type then the stock PC and Xbox art. The red dragon with a armored figure and and a female floating above it.

Still waiting on an actual answer that pertains to this threads discussion on what was missing (in the female sense or whatever) from the rest of DAO's marketing.

Honestly, I was fine with the female presence in DAO. We saw her in two Origin trailers, in Zevran's character trailer, and a female was the "face" of DAO.

When I think about females in marketing from BioWare in terms of this game, I'm more inclined to compare it to ME, where there is a pre-determined protagonist with a voice. In this sense, everything we've ever seen of FemShep is buried, deep, deep, deep within the mines of Mass Effect marketing; it's not unreasonable to fear that we won't see more acknowledgement of Lady Hawke.

I would like to see a trailer; I do not, however, think it is necessary. I would happily settle for less--we already have confirmation we'll be seeing her, and I hope we'll also get to see female walking animations, her voice, and her LIs.

can someone clarify if this is the only official comment on female Hawke
is there another?

We will show her eventually. I don't have a firm timeline, but we well.
And she is -hot-.

And for the record I don't care what she looks like I do care that people know she exists

and that the tv commercials are not fully representative of the game

and that ME hid female shepard so that you cant even find her on their website

(femshep appears 2x on the ME site. In the credits for ME1 and in a later article on getting more out of the game)

The problem with giving the player a choice of character (in this case, gender) is that you have to explain that to non-RPG players in a thirty-second commercial. They would have to almost focus advertising around the gender choice for the advertisement to make any sense.

It's difficult to say that a male protagonist is better to advertise, because I think there's a larger percent of male players that enjoy playing female characters (Samus, Laura Croft, etc.) then there are female players that enjoy playing male characters.

We also have confirmation that we'll see her "very soon" from the BioWare live chat during Gamescon.

I'll be happy to see Lady Hawke and I think it will be nice to know that Bioware is acknowledging all the lady gamers out there....at least that's my hope.

And yes ME is my real concern and that the TV ads are not representative of the game.

You can be assured this will be the case. People have already mentioned how the ads for DA:O misrepresented the game. Bioware is just casting their net far and wide, so to speak.

I just have to wonder when a God of War fanboy looks at the new cinematic and thinks he's going to get a hack and slash clone.

Or they have neither and the game can be just as good.

Understandable.
For me I just find it to be conjecture and a little bit silly to allready be going on about this especially when there is plenty of evidence to the other.
I would also like to see her but I am a guy and I am sure it is for entirley different reasons then you *wink wink nudge nudge joke joke*

I find it as a win/win scenario. BioWare gets some money and I get to laugh at someone that bases purchases  on first impressions and wasted their money without knowing what it was they were buying and then are upset about it.
Especially in this day and age it is so very easy to find out the things you want to know. That is if you are truly interested in finding something suitable to their tastes and have the initiative to do a bit of work.

sadly those that bought the game on false pretenses and hated it and those that didn't buy the game on false pretenses and would have loved it are probably not hanging out on this board

And whose fault would it be if you turned out to hate it? Would you take fault because it was possible for you to know exactly what you were buying or would it be the marketers fault? It is their job to make poeple part with their money in any way possible and its common knowledge advertisements are not true representations of the product.

and I see I could of been a bit more clear so I will edit it in a moment.

And yet here you are. Word of mouth is marketing FYI.

And i know this is hard for you to understand but not everyone who would love something (be it book movie or game) are not guaranteed to find something. No matter what that marketing has, shows, or does. There will always be those that miss out. There is no guarantee that the right type of marketing with the right stuff included will reach all the right people to pique their interest and send them running to buy the product.

Gaming is a hobby and if you are serous about a hobby you do not sit around waiting for the perfect ad or someone to tell you what you would like.  You would be actively be searching for those things you want and know you would enjoy.

tpryan01 you are a great example of this. You knew about ME and DAO but dismissed them at a glance. And why? Because a feature that is appealing to you was not mentioned or made clear enough. How many other features are not mentioned that could appeal to a new player be them male or female?
Should BioWare now send out pamphlets to everyone with descriptions of all the features their game has? How would that work with television ads? Should the advertisement just be a star wars style opening with the list of features? Maybe some subliminal messaging to stick them right in the brain?

I see we have radically different views on the responsibilities of advertisements. It's good to know because at least now I can ignore you when the conversation goes that way.

No it isn't. Word of mouth is having that one geeky friend who's into absurd levels of nerdy crap who won't shut up about the latest piece of science fiction to grace the bookshelves. That is not marketing unless I am very uninformed about what marketing is.

What I am translating this in my head as is 'because you can never reach every single living organism that will be interested in this game with youn ad campaigns, you should stick with what's there.' Is that accurate?

Gaming is a leisurely activity for most people, among them me. Obviously I can no longer consider it a hobby as I'm to much of a couch warmer to go and dig up all the latest news on what's coming this winter or fall. I suppose fun past time will have to do than. Thank you for fixing my erroneous definition.

That's a great attitude to have.

"Everyone that proves my point just isn't here at the moment."

And yet, you wonder why nobody takes you seriously.

I want to know why it is so difficult to research a game. It's not brainsurgery.

And if a game doesn't appeal to you from trailers and such, why not wait until the reviews or something? Then you see the review and get an idea of how the game plays and if it is worth the money, decide if that game is something you might enjoy, and THEN you can buy it.

Because you can't research a game you dont know exsists.  If you just happen upon the game in a physical store you have the game cover or a clerk who may not be knowledgeable.

But that's still the same thing. Only a few people actually buy games right off the shelves without knowing anything about them. That and weary parents.
