I agree not everyone always plays their own gender. But the question is how do most people feel about playing as another gender, and because the option is there wouldn't you sell more by advertising it?

I can't say I agree. There more suitables games for people that just want to play a different gender. I can't talk for the girls on the forum, but I'm almost sure most of them don't played Dragon Age just because they could play as a girl.

I think many of you male gamers find it hard to understand because you can take being able to play as a male for granted.

Imagine it was the other way around: nearly all games made you play as a female and most of those that didn't have the male overly sexualised and specifically designed to appeal to immature female gamers.

Wouldn't you then find a game that lets you play as an unsexualised, independent, strong male to have lots of appeal?
Does it make more sense now?

Have you seen the trailer? What do you think it would look like to someone who's never even heard of Dragon Age?

I have. Advertising Male Hawke does not portray the game as something it isn't. The player can choose to be male. Unless you meant the actual combat itself exhibited in the trailer, which is another matter entirely.

This is getting pedantic.

The trailer depicts an overtly masculine character battling monsters and stealing a kiss from a beautiful woman. What would an outsider assume the game was about?

Check out this World of Warcraft Statistic

"females ages 25 to 54, accounting for approximately 29 percent of total personal computer game players. Males ages 25 to 54 account for the next largest block at roughly 20 percent of all personal computer game players"

Source: http://blog.nielsen....040609_fnl1.pdf

I would say WoW has a similar demographic

Do they get that info from accounts and *put birth date here*....I have lied on so many of those things its ridiculous! I wanna play a game not give you my personal info!

There is also this kind of people. It is impossible to track down everyone who plays games.

So the new question for ladies only:

How did you find out you could play as a girl in DA:O, ME or ME2?

I've been playing Bioware games for ten years.  It's just understood at this point.  As for why did I first pick up Baldur's Gate?  We got a computer for the first time when I was 12.  I did a google search for dragons because I like dragons.  Thus I found out about Dragonlance.  From there I found out about D&D.  Then TSR.  From TSR's website I found out about Baldur's Gate.  The rest is history.

I've been a fan of BioWare since BG1 (12 years ago) and first learned about DA:O back when it was announced.  I think I more or less expected to be able to play as a female.

That said, I'm not sure I really represent the average BioWare customer.  I doubt most have been playing BW's games for 12 years.

Of course, most of them would assume that the game has only a male protagonist. That is however the perception of the trailer being incorrect, not the portrayal.

I'd wager that if they've never heard of it before this point, they've probably never heard of games like it,
and they probably won't purchase it.

So what would be the point of ads?

There is a sizable group of people who have played Dragon Age and other Bioware games.

Those are returning fans who likely frequent forums like this. Someone who hasn't played these games and knows nill about the company relies on ads to peak their interest in a series. If nothing comes from their first exposure to it, they are unlikely to look any further.

I suspect most studies are being done with the help of surveys and account info...this makes me more confident that those studies will have a large margin for error as they do not consider all the variables.

I hope in the (roughly) 8 months between now and launch female gamers find materials in our marketing that they enjoy. :)

Did people make this big of a fuss over Mass Effect?

I don't recall them ever portraying Shepard as Female at any point in that advertising campaign.

Nope. In the internet you can get anything. If you are lucky, you can even become famous.

That's quite an assumption. Most people who have played Dragon Age probably have not gone on this forum (or similar forums) for more than advice on how to beat a boss or something similar, if at all. I have a few friends who are fans of Bioware games yet are not forum goers at all.

Someone who hasn't played these games and knows nill about the company relies on ads to peak their interest in a series. If nothing comes from their first exposure to it, they are unlikely to look any further.

Clearly, trailers like these do attract new players.

Right and I am posing the possibility that a large majority of female gamers that did not buy the game had no clue they could play as a female or that fem shep was the badass awesomeness that she truly is.

I have played many many videos games.I was not until recently have I really visited any forums.

Also when they put surveys in places which *force you to say where do you first hear about so and so...I tend to lie about it...Because you know I AM NOT INTERESTED!

Rarely people are when they are on the internet trying to entertain themselves.Best done under the hood.

Let's discount the women who don't only play games that have female PCs, right.

To be true, I can't say that for sure. I don't have any problem playing games with females at all, but I guess I'm just lucky? However, I do can understand your point and the desires of the OP.
