One problem I had with the marketing of DAO and ME and ME2 was that until I was told by a male (months after the game came out) that I could play as a female I had no idea that it was possible.
The fact that it's an RPG did not give you the sense that you could do this? That's great, just go on hating something until someone tells you otherwise. No need to do research when there's something as important as Perceived Reality in the way.
I am only concerned in how more NEW female gamers can be brought into the game.
I fully realize that by responding to this quote, I'm on thin ice because I'm not a female. But I don't think that you should be worrying about if females are in a game just so they can be in a game.
I mean, what if we had a female president just because she was female? Or a black male? Or an Irish male?

I agree not everyone always plays their own gender. But the question is how do most people feel about playing as another gender, and because the option is there wouldn't you sell more by advertising it?
I can assure you that if they do market it that way, it won't be because of threads like these.

I would beg to differ.
I turned down Red Dead, Arhkam Asylum and Uncharted 2 for that very reason. They looked like amazing games when I saw others play, but I can't get into an RPG where I am forced to play as a male and if I am not enjoying myself why spend the money or the time.
Let's focus on Arkham Asylum. You play as BATMAN, an already established MALE CHARACTER. You just proved that you're the stereotype you are saying that you are not.
