I'd have thought the reason was kind of obvious... The more women who buy the game, the more bioware will take them into consideration when making and marketing the games, the more we like them :)

And, people tend to like "converting" other people to the hobbies they personally enjoy.  If said hobby is dominated by one particular demographic, those of other demographics will want others like themselves to feel more welcome.

you make me laugh... There is no way to prove the sun will come up tomorrow or that you aren't the dream of a tree ... but these are more proof than you fellows have delivered.

I can see the sun come up every morning.
I can't go to every household in the world and verify that the females of the house do or do not play videogames.

If the people that came up with the statistics were of noble repute,
I might be more inclined to believe the crap on those websites.

But CNET doesn't strike me as a place I would want to go to find a reliable census count.

That's right, follow your dreams.

And?

And what? Do you not have a dream? A passion in life?

Your jumping on a wagon dragging  air.

I'm sitting at my computer posting on an internet forum. =]

prove it.

Not when the character they'll be playing feels like the same male lead they see in all those B-List summer movies.

Which he isn't or at least doesn't have to be and that's part of the problem. He's a recycled archetype meant to appeal to the imagined male drive for high adventure romance and war.

God forbid people appreciate parts of the trailer that you don't.

You mean the parts you would only get if you had some knowledge of the series going in?

Can't we just agree that while male gamers are still the majority, female gamers are a large and not-insignificant segment (who do more shopping than guys anyway)?

The exact breakdown isn't important and definitely not worth arguing over.

I've already quoted a ton of statistics about the false idea that PC gamers are mostly male.

But you haven't explained why it is so important to you, personally, that "NEW women" are attracted to the franchise.

I'd have thought the reason was kind of obvious... The more women who buy the game, the more bioware will take them into consideration when making and marketing the games, the more we like them :)

I totally agree! Image IPB

We all know this. We are just trying to show this poor soul that accurate, reliable and trust-worthy researches do not exist.

Maybe you can clear up my confusion with elaborating a little bit why he is so overtly masculine.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make, but I'm not sure how anyone could argue that the Hawke in the trailer isn't "overtly masculine."  He has a beard, for one thing, which women tend not to have...

But he is a guy. Some guys have beards. It cant be overtly masculine just because its a guy who looks like a guy and has a beard. Masculine sure... overtly masculine, no.
Would it be overtly femine if it was the FemHawke and she had long hair? Females tend to wear their hair longer then men.

Because people must have knowledge of the series to appreciate a trailer for a game or movie series, right?

Yes. That's kinda what overt means. Out in the open for everyone to see.

Out of curiousity, what did you think I was saying?

One problem I had with the marketing of DAO and ME and ME2 was that until I was told by a male (months after the game came out) that I could play as a female I had no idea that it was possible.

The fact that it's an RPG did not give you the sense that you could do this? That's great, just go on hating something until someone tells you otherwise. No need to do research when there's something as important as Perceived Reality in the way.

I am only concerned in how more NEW female gamers can be brought into the game.

I fully realize that by responding to this quote, I'm on thin ice because I'm not a female. But I don't think that you should be worrying about if females are in a game just so they can be in a game.

I mean, what if we had a female president just because she was female? Or a black male? Or an Irish male?

tpryan01 wrote...

I agree not everyone always plays their own gender. But the question is how do most people feel about playing as another gender, and because the option is there wouldn't you sell more by advertising it?

I can assure you that if they do market it that way, it won't be because of threads like these.

tpryan01 wrote...

I would beg to differ.

I turned down Red Dead, Arhkam Asylum and Uncharted 2 for that very reason. They looked like amazing games when I saw others play, but I can't get into an RPG where I am forced to play as a male and if I am not enjoying myself why spend the money or the time.

Let's focus on Arkham Asylum. You play as BATMAN, an already established MALE CHARACTER. You just proved that you're the stereotype you are saying that you are not.

I'm just trying to figure what you could possibly be talking about. As we've both agreed the trailer is meant for men and I've gone on to speculate as to what in men they're trying to appeal to. I want to know what it is you meant by that line.

Ok guy I have to sleep now. I think this thread has been great.

I know every single one of you agrees that more gamers playing DA2 has to be a good thing right?

G'night keep on being awesome.
