So... I'm slightly excited.  But I'm going to try to hold it in until more details are release.

I'm rather exited that the Franchise isnt dead, and quite alive at that.

VERY exited at the "Forge" system to create your own quests.. but need to know more about it, before we can claim it to be a worthy sucsessor to the much loved Toolset.

Wondering if with this news it means the legal issues between Atari/Hasbro has come to an end. Might pave the way for a last NWN2 patch maybe?

Just because Cryptic has a fail or two under it's belt, doesn't mean this will fail.  Just look at NWN2 and Alpha Protocol.  NWN2 quite successful for Obsidian.  AP, not so much.  So it is possible that it'll be at least decent.

I like Cyptic's Artstyle in their games. Like Blizzard, they go for their own vibe, with quality artwork.

Their MMO's might have issues, but I blame that more on budget, than anything else.

And above all.. I prefer this, over nothing at all. Off course I would have liked NWN3 with all the facets of the previous two games. But this truely is better than nothing.

Correct me if I am wrong but according to that link Neverwinter sounds more like a Guildwars kind of a game and less like a pure MMO. In other words it is an online co-op game where you can either play with up to four friends or with computer controlled allies if you choose to do so.

In any case, what's for sure is that the legal issues between Hasbro and Atari are probably over and I think that this should be taken as good news because I'm certain it paves the way for other D&D games as well.

You're absolutely correct.  In reading the interview on GameSpot, it would appear to be more GW style than a pure MMO.  This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but not necessarily good, either.  We'll have to wait and see.

I do, however, disagree on the assumption of the legal issues. I don't think that they are even close to being over.  However, I think that this game has been in development long before the issues started.  Cryptic was quoted back before Champions came out that they would have an MMO out each year for the next 4 or 5 years(starting with Champions).  So, maybe this game was grandfathered in or something.  Again, just an opinion.

I'm not impressed that the ruined building on the left of the released press art is an MotB placeable. I also don't see how we're going to see any community made content like monsters, tiles, etc ingame since it seems like everything is going to be on Cryptic's servers. And we get 5 (count 'em) classes? Hopefully Cryptic will surprise for the better.

Not excited at all:
1) It's an Atari Production. They will screw it up as usual.
2) They screwed up the NWN franchise.
3) D&D Online is stingy; few feats, spells, classes, etc.
4) NW MMO will have only five classes. Stingy! I predict the game will have 3 spells.
5) We'll get plenty of propaganda until release as they try to jack up our interest, then crash it by disappointing us, then conclude that the market simply isn't there(after they trashed it by playing with our expectations), then get even more stingy! Atari just loves to wallow in it's own misery as it creates it. But, what do you expect from a bankruptcy ****?

I don't like the sound of this... I was hoping for another singleplayer game with multiplayer functionality, not a multiplayer game with the option to replace people with "computer-controlled allies".

Not up my street. I get games only if they have a solid SP campaign. However, I'm happy that Atari and Hasbro appear to have resolved their dispute and wish Cryptic Studios well.

I'll be waiting for DA2, FONV and TW2.

A little logic will fill in some gaps:

  • NWNO is being made by Cryptic Studios
  • Cryptic is best known for their MMO properties.
  • NWNO will most likely be a MMO, with instanced dungeons for questing with a party of friends, very much how DDO is handled now.  The model works.
  • NWNO will also have some sort of quest builder interface very much like how City of Heroes (another Cryptic game) has a quest builder.  That is so obvious, it makes my head hurt.
  • All of the above is speculation on my part, but momma didn't raise no stupid strumpets, so I think the logic is quite sound.
My hope is that they go with the ever-increasing popular model of non-subscription fee and just go with cash shop purchaces.  It works for DDO and LotRO and you can have a whole lot more game for a lot less cash out your door.

There's something to consider though. The various interviews profile it as if the developers feel like fish out of the water because this game isn't like their previous games. Maybe I'm being optimistic, but maybe that means it won't be very MMO-like?

Well, DDO or Guildwars isn't like anything Cryptic has made. Not sure why people don't call those MMOs. They are. I'm still betting that "different" to them means a different type of MMO.

It was leaked a while ago that this would be an MMO...we are just now seeing what that is. I could describe DDO or Guildwars using the exact same terminology Cryptic uses to describe their game.

Neverwinter/GuildWars/DDO features co-operative multiplayer in an ever-evolving, persistent world where adventurers quest alongside thousands of other warriors, rogues, wizards and faithful avengers.

Ok, good info here:

Gamespot Interview

Key point being:

GS: We understand that Neverwinter will use a system codenamed "Forge" that will let players build their own content. Can you explain how this will work in practice? Also, what kind of content will players be able to make?

JE:
Forge (tentative name) will enable players to write adventures, to create maps, and to attach their quests to in-game entrances and NPCs. Our key philosophy is that Forge needs to be accessible (i.e. usable to many people) and that user-generated content is an optional form of content. In other words, a player knows that he's playing UGC and not the game.

I wouldn't compare Guild Wars with "free" DDO at all, they just don't work the same way because purchased GW is a complete game while DDO without a subscription fee isn't, most of it's content requires either subscription or purchase. Also quality of DDO is very questionable imo though that's a different subject.

Neverwinter Online made by Cryptic I see as a probable fail, all of their previous games were solid (by reviews, I didn't play any) but without any serious success. And now they want to experiment with Neverwinter, make something new like "it's not a MMO, it's OMG (!!!) - you play with bunch of friends": "We're trying to create new sorts of games that we call "OMGs" (online multiplayer games)."! "Online multiplayer game", hmmm... that's new.
