Why don't mages go to Tevinter?

Looking back at the history of Thedas (getting on for 2100 years now) and came across the Imperial Chantry which broke away in Towers 3:87.  Basically they say that The Imperial chantry says magic is allright as long as it's not blood magic.  If I found out I was a mage, or my child was a mage I'd probably head for there.  Less shame and ridicule and hate all around.  Who wants to suffer the disgust of the people you grew up with and your neighbors anyway?

Anyone else with me on this?

Mages for Tevinter!

Edit:  I should probably finish reading the history :P ...

All the reasons people have mentioned are valid.

There's also the fact that the Tevinter magisters don't particularly like the idea of having foreign mages flooding into the Imperium and possibly becoming competitors-- they're not sympathetic to the plight of mages elsewhere. Remember that the magisters are at the top of the food chain there. For them it's a matter of political power.

Even if a foreign mage *was* able to get into the Imperium, that wouldn't automatically make them a magister. They might find that life among a pack of piranha at the bottom of their particular pile, while filled with much more "freedom" than they're used to, comes with its own... difficulties.

Is it wrong, that I was hoping a "codex" icon appeared at the bottom of my screen after reading this?  Just a little more insight in the current culture of Teviniter with-in this current timeline.

You may indeed run into some more lore on Tevinter...

On topic: I was not thinking of mages who have already been discovered by the chantry, but rather apostates (who are already not tied down to any particular place and are more mobile than most). Might they not see Tevinter as a potential haven, despite it's downsides, purely as a refuge from the chantry? Sure the resident Magisters probably wouldn't like them much but would they be aware of the negative reception they'd receive?

Ah, but there is a Circle of Magi in Tevinter. And that means that mages are no more free to not be a part of it than they are elsewhere in Thedas. Yes, you have significantly more power and freedom, but you exchange being controlled by the Chantry for being controlled by... other mages.

But I'm sure some might see it as a potential haven, even so. Provided they can make the long trip and evade the man-eating tigers they might even be right.

So the Imperial Chantry in Tevinter still has a Circle of Magi, except instead of Templars controlling them its simply other mages? So there are no Templars in the Imperial Chantry?

There are indeed Imperial templars. Their primary role is to enforce magical law, and since they are part of the Chantry-- which is controlled by the Circle-- they are thus controlled by the mages. The majority of Imperial templars, however, lack the ability to counter magic. They are primarily soldiers.
