My first play-through, since they described the vents as being hot I figured Thane would be a good pick. I didn't realize it would be the door decryption that would be the real issue.

So, Thane was my only loss in all play-throughs and I'll probably carry that one over first.

.....doesn't Miranda says "we need a tech expert"???? I duno.... that seemed self explanatory :P. sry:wub:

The day I start listening to women that walk around in skin-tight clothing, belly-aching about how perfect they are and sticking her ass out every chance she gets....is the day I put a shotgun to my groin and pull the trigger.

Only person dead in any of my playthroughs is Miranda. And even then, she's alive in all but two.

Actually I've never been to that thread. I'm curious now though.

I select five out of the twelve to kill strictly for dramatic purpose. It's all meta gaming. My Shephard is not killing them on purpose. They
all die due to not being loyal and not because I select them for a task
their not suited for.

What's a suicide mission without some casualties? Jack, Miranda and Tali
were selected due to annoying me the most at various parts of the game.

Jack dies also because I like to hear Garrus instead of Jack  chew out Miranda as a bad leader.
Samara dies because she said might have to kill me later and I almost never do her
loyalty mission.

Kasumi is just unfortunate enough to be paired with Miranda inside the biotic bubble created by an unloyal Samara. Kasumi also has the most authentic death scream when taken by the seeker
swarms IMO.

As for killing all the women; hey at least Dr. Chakwas survives.

Well, I plan on carrying over ALL of my 6 files (yes....6....><), and while 4 of them will have everyone surviving, two of them are my "cinematic" runthroughs.

By that, I mean they're the choices I'd make if I were trying to go for a true box-office movie trilogy. I make choices with these ideals in mind: choices that make Shepard a dynamic character, choices that highlight the poster-children (Garrus, Ashley, Miranda, Thane, etc.) and characters with significance (Miranda, Mordin, etc.), and choices that would yield the highest dramatic outcome.

Therefore, in ME2, these are my survivors:

Miranda
Mordin
Grunt
Thane
Tali

Everyone else has a good character reason to die--Zaeed died holding the line, learning the true virtues of teamwork over self. Jack was the one who stayed behind to "make sure the Cheerleader lived" during the biotic bubble, signifying her potential forgiveness of Cerberus or her obsession with killing Miranda herself. Garrus dies getting the 2nd team through--a means to make up for his Omega crew dying under his command.

Likewise, the survivors had equally dramatic reasons for living- Tali, the exiled one, was now arguably saved by the Geth Legion, who also died on the line. Miranda survives after quitting Cerberus, her almost lifelong allegiance. So on and so forth. It's a fun runthrough, and finding reasons for good character deaths/survivals is almost as fun as the actual mission itself.

I'm currently working on that 2nd "Cinematic Runthrough". Trying to iron out the metagaming kinks of a whole new file, with new choices (equally dynamic), and new surviving squadmates.

I am too, but Tali ALWAYS lives, Samara & Jack 99% of the time. And your problem is? I suppose you kill all the MALES?

Several playthroughs yielded several results:

Game 1: Paragade MShepard, LI Ashley/Miranda. Tali dies - it really was an accident due to choosing Zaeed as a Fire Team Leader.

Game 2: Paragon FShepard, LI none/Thane. Forgot one upgrade, Jack died.

Game 3: Neutral MShepard, LI none/Miranda. No one died.

Game 4: Paragade FShep, LI Kaidan/none. Garrus carried away by swarm.

Game 5: Renegade FShep, LI Liara/none. Only Miranda, Jacob and Jack survived (that was hard)

Game 6: MShep, LI Miranda. Final idealism/pragmatism score and suicide mission Results pending.

Obviously, Miranda and Jacob are the only ones who always survive...

First time through, nobody died at all. Used common sense (and the forums <_<) in my suicide mission roles. The entire crew survived.

For my 'canon' playthrough, I'm probably going to kill off Jacob (Don't look at me, he volunteered.) Maybe Tali as well, I guess I'll have to see how I decide to handle her loyalty mission this time through.

but do you agree for the sake of a good story some people have to die?

That really depends on the role they play in the third, imo. I'm not going to kill someone who has awesome content in ME3.

First playthrough Legion died.

Generally I'll have everyone survive. Just because if they aren't squadmates in ME3, I'm still hoping for cameos.

My Shepard might be a renegade and the consequences are all that matter, but he's not stupid and is still a good leader. Everyone still survives.

For story reasons if I had to 'kill off' squadmates? Hm...that's tough.

Samara: While she's supposed to be powerful, I suspect she isn't as powerful as she's made out to be. In the seeker swarm section she seems to be weaken quite quickly. Doesn't seem to matter in the larger picture.

Jacob: Likely to be expendable. Seems like a decent enough guy but story-wise...not that important.

Thane: Unless there's a miracle cure for him he'll die later anyway, suicide mission or not.

Jack: As interesting as her backstory is, I'm not sure if there's much to carry her forward plotwise. (That she doesn't wear armour doesn't increase her survival odds.)

Likely to live but not important if they do.

Zaeed: stubborn enough to survive a gunshot to the head, so can't see him dying on the mission. Not important story-wise though. Nice to have around perhaps, but not essential.

Must keeps:

Mordin: our scientist Salarian. Require his expertise. Plus the whole genophage cure angle that's available in ME2.

Grunt: Shepard's his battlemaster. Can't see him dying. Also, if genophage isn't cured, his being pure Krogan might be significant.

Miranda: Ties to Cerberus. Would question of worth to plot, but would like to see how that plays out, especially if she quits Cerberus when Shepard blows up the Collectors' base.

Tali: sentimental for ME1, and could be instrumental to the Geth-Quarian 'conflict'. Sounds like a major plotline to me.

Legion: instrumental to Geth-Quarian 'conflict'. That Legion seems to have developed beyond just 'being an AI' is interesting.

Kasumi: the whole thing about Kenji's graybox. Sounds major if it was kept.

Garrus: hard enough to survive I'd like to think. Sentimental reasons more than anything else.

That's my take anyway.

Why wouldn't you import all of them? Do you intend to play the game only once? If you played the other games more than once there's a pretty good chance you'll play the next one more than once.

However if I HAD to pick one it'll be my cannon Earthborn/Sole Survivor/Adept/Paragon Shepard who romanced Ashley and stayed true, saved the Council and then told them to "f**k off", destroyed Collector base, while only losing Legion in the process.

On my first time Mordin and Legion died cause i forgot Mordin last upgrade and Legion died cause i had Grunt leading the team which i though would be good cause he could rage on all the collectors like a bulldozer!! :P

However i hate when my crew dies so did a new one with all upgrades this time and Garrus leading instead =) I belive any story is good story aslong as you fight for your life and the life of your crew and the ENTIRE known galaxy as we know it! What matters is your dedication to the cause not if someone dies or lives, if you work your ass of for others lives any outcome should be great story.

First playthrough I didn't expect that it would really matter who does what as I underestimated Bioware. Still I just lost Legion to the insects as I used Miranda as biotic.

The main playthrough, the one completely based on my own decisions in such a situation kept my crew and squad alive.

Everyone. Like the OP everyone survived on my first and so far canon playthrough.

But my personal canon playthrough may change after ME3 is released and I have beaten that game. I don't know what role if any the ME2 squadmates will play in ME3, so I want them all alive for now. After I play ME3 I may go back and alter my canon ME2 playthrough, losing a few squadmates. I think taking some casualties is a little more realistic, and
the final victory over the Reapers shouldn't feel easy.

Assuming I wouldn't be missing out on major content in ME3 I'm thinking about losing Jacob,  Zaeed and Thane in ME2. I'd kill of Tali in ME2 as well if she isn't a squadmate in ME3. If she is squadmate in ME3 I may have her die in that instead.

I didn't lose anyone on any of my play throughs. I kind of agree that there should have been some casualties for realism purposes. Bioware should have given a couple of Vimire choices throughout the mission. I figure the vent mission and secondary squad leaders were the Virmire choices but I was surprised that the choosen squadies survived.

I have 2 saves, one on Normal and one on Insanity. The normal save has everyone alive, the Insanity one has only Garrus and Zaeed alive.

It was hilarious really, me and Garrus were legging it away from the Collectors to get to the Normandy, dive on and escape. And then in the hold there's a load of coffins and Zaeed, alone with guilty look on his face. I bet he made out like a guddamn bandit after that.

I'll probably play through the first time with my bad save, then the second time with a full crew save to see what is different.

Kiara Shepard left no one behind. The crew and the squad are her people and she's damn determined to bring them all back alive. The only dead left where the collectors. You know briefly before she blew the **** out of them. Of course it came close and she near shot Zaeed herself (she settled for punching him in the face) but that's about it.

I see people's points about it being more dramatic is people die but I think the mission is dramatic enough when you first play through it as you're not sure if the choices are right or not. I prefer to save everyone just to go "Oh a suicide mission, yeah? Well hey look even the dying guy is alive.Suck it doubters!". Plus I actually thought Garrus died when she got shot leading the second squad and I was shocked. But he shrugged it off like the (manic depressive (although I've somewhat sorted that out now hopefully)) badass he was.

In all my playthroughs I tend to let everyone live to be honest, as I define my characters by how I act but overall the characters has good leaders and know who to send and what to do. For example my main playthrough (Kiara) is basically a paragade, but more she is a badass hero really.

But different strokes for different folks!
