Bear in mind though, that a standard longbow does under 8 base damage so that +2 might mean more than you think.

Yes, but base damage accounts only for a small portion of longbow damage; usually the lion's share comes from the attribute bonus. Armour could reduce actual damage to near zero in which case the +2 would represent a bigger share but the overall contribution to the dragon's demise would still be so insignificant as makes no odds.

For example, taking 10% as the threshold for a non-negligible contribution then that would correspond to firing 188 enchanted arrows instead of plain ones.

Having said that: the wiki gives 33.4 for a High Dragon's damage reduction (armour), which reduces longbow damage for low-level toons to the minimum of 1 unless you can sunder/shatter the armour. In that case the +2 would cause the effective archer damage to triple. However, it would take over a thousand enchanted arrows to bring down a High Dragon in this way...

It would probably be more cost-effective to sell all those arrows and make traps and bombs instead. Not to mention much quicker and more fun.

If you're a really low level, it'll have 30.75 armour. Conversely high level and it'll have 36.875. It gets 15 armour from its traits, plus it actually has a heavy plate chestpiece equipped (separate to the one it drops. If you look in the toolset you'll find most monsters have humanoid armour "equipped" so that their armour scales) and since the high dragon can't be below level 14 its tier will vary from red steel to dragonbone (33.4 is for silverite).

But that doesn't mean low level archers can't do much. Armour is rolled in from 70% to 100%, so its mean armour is down to 26.1. Then your archer can expect about 10 AP at a lowish level, so it's now only reducing damage by ~16. And even a level 10-12 archer will be doing quite a bit more than that.

Amazing info, thanks.

I was trying to paint a worst-case scenario which would make the effect of enchanted arrows as big as it could possibly be. E.g. low-STR non-archers being given a curved piece of wood to hold during the Andraste job, right out of Lothering.

The scenario isn't quite as far-fetched as it might seem. Bows with low DEX requirements are rarely seen after the lowest levels, and if you didn't save some for Sten and Oghren then you'll have to give them crossbows (no strength-based bonus damage) unless you want to trawl the highways in the hope of finding Old Tegrin.

This probably has little bearing on Operation Andraste since you can always pick and equip an optimal team for that if you wish, but it could be relevant if you take all the boys out for a beer and stumble over a phylactery (in which case it is often advisable to have only one dancer centre-stage, just like with the High Dragon).

I think Leliana did have Shattering Shot already, though, when my level-6 Warden picked her up in Lothering. One more nail (or arrow?) in the coffin of my worst-case scenario...

The high dragon can be below level 14. The lower level cap for the mountain top is 8, which means a lower level cap of 10 for the dragon.

Creatures can have their own level cap in addition to area level caps, though it's pretty rare.

Anyway, the high dragon has one such cap, and that's a lower cap at 14 (upper is unbounded, which will conform to the rank-adjusted area cap)

^You are right. But it is 15 rather than 14. I checked it at level 7.

That's odd. This is what the toolset says: http://i.imgur.com/CT6aRBO.png

Wonder what causes the difference.

What about Morrigan? Around that time she's quite a bit ahead of the Warden.

My level-scrying toon (Survival III right after Lothering) couldn't even kill the fake Weylon without Morrigan hitting level 8.

Off topic slightly, but am i the only one who wants to teabag the high dragon after you kill it?

@DarthGizka - All were level 7, Morri leveled up early though.
