IT could be a hive-mind organism that is very genetically flexible. It could infest, modify a host (ie broodmother, blight wolf), assimilate (human=hurlock, elf=shriek, dwarf=genlock), and reproduce. And it operate through a psychic hive mind.
Also the genetic nature of the taint may allow it to be ageless, like cancer cells, which explains darkspawn's agelessness and gore-ish appearance due to the cancerous nature of the taint.
If you think of the taint as something very similar to Starcraft's Zerg, it makes much more sense.
The chantry's explanation with mages corrupting the golden city could be just a metaphor+propaganda against magic. But the darkspawn taint itself might indeed connected to the Fade, because in the circle tower quest, you can see the tower interior covered with this flesh-and-blood thing that resemble darkspawn tissue (ie broodmother cave). Maybe the taint is a super virus resulting from something from the fade interacting with microorganisms in mortal realm?
I know this is a "fantasy" realm, but a little science wouldn't hurt anyone, would it?
