So as a nod to kangaxx the secret boss from BG2, you get to meet gaxkan. Not sure what spawned his quest, but it involves a lot of codex and solving the "collect body parts" quest in deep roads. Beat him and get a super nice frost sword which I then used after dumping starfang.

You collect 3 or 4 bags of body parts scattered aroung the various Thaigs in the deep roads. Once you collect them all there is an altar in one of the Thaigs click it and you get a choice.
If you kill him someone said you get a nice sword, if you let him leave he gives you 20 gold i think.

You get an awesome sword and shield. He is rated as a tougher boss than the high dragon, IIRC. Truly reminiscent of the BG2 lich quests.

I did that quest...and just got a generic "Fade Demon" Spawned, no secret and no good loot.

I did not get the sword, but I still killed him.
I'm not even sure what he is or why he butchered himself. I tried to find the man who could tell me in Denerim, but never did.

The monster in the Deep Roads isn't Gaxxkang. Gaxxkang spawns when you finish the "Unbound" quest and find him in Denerim. He's in one of the back alley areas on the map, the door will be marked if you've collected all the information for the quest in your codex.
Personally, I found the battle with Gaxxkang to be pathetically easy. He didn't get a single member of my party below 75% health. Kangaxx in BG2 was much, much harder to beat.

He wasn't all that difficult for my group either, just a longer fight. I think draining all his mana likely had something to do with that though. Glyph of neutralization ftw.

The Fade demon in the Deep Roads is for the quest Asunder, as is the demon's name.
You got me all excited when you said he dropped a Unique =/, but I remember he only dropped generic boss level loot.
